The CDP Creative Recovery Group
In 2007, Chemical Dependency Program staff member, Carmen Levasseur, began a new and innovative group for program clients, the Creative Recovery Group. Her colleague, Laura Mclarty, joined her in 2008.
The purpose of group is for clients to engage and connect with one another through creative expression. As clients explore their creative abilities they demonstrate increased self-esteem and awareness. The group projects vary in difficulty and purpose. Examples of the projects and their purpose include:
Personal Crests - Clients create personal crests highlighting parts of their personality they are proud of or their personality traits as represented by a collage.
Recovery Quilt - Clients work individually to create a square for the quilt. The square can represent a part of the individual, as aspect of their recovery or other meaning. The group then works together to arrange the squares in a creative way to create a beautiful complete quilt. The quilt is proudly displayed in Greenwich House waiting room at 122 W. 27th Street, 6th floor.
Beads - As simple process such as making jewelry with beads, is a wonderful way for clients to manage emotions and obtain peace. The clients have expressed the calm feelings they are able to achieve by stringing beads together. They may choose to make something for themselves, loved ones and occasionally a counselor.
