Eat Clay or DIE!

The bakery is open! But watch out - these goodies are baked at thousands of degrees and they're not as sweet as they look.

Greenwich House Pottery is pleased to present the exhibition ‘Eat Clay or Die!’ in our Storefront Gallery (May 12th - June 6th). This exhbition, which transforms the window of our 1928 red-brick building into a faux bakery, is co-curated by GHP Resident Artist Susannah Tisue and GHP Member Artist Michele Quan. Strolling down Jones Street, a quiet block in the West Village, you discover a shop window filled with mouth-watering sweets: trays upon trays of pastries, cakes and candies stimulate the taste buds and promise a moment of delicious fulfillment. "Must go inside," you think to yourself. But further investigation reveals that the sweets are all made of clay, as hard and unyielding as a rock. Here, dozens of artists working out of Greenwich House Pottery have collaborated on a mouth-watering trompe l’oeil installation.

Tiny licorice devils dance among licorice allsorts. Glazed doughnuts and petit fours reveal secrets, ideas or celebrations. Hand-crafted cake stands and platters become pedestals, supporting momentous cakes filled with memories, dreams and fantasies while candy hearts and bittersweet checkerboard cookies wield darkness and light. On the surface, hard and glossy; within, sweet and complex. "Eat Clay or Die!" is an irreverent exploration of the nature of desire and consumption, preserved forever in the world's oldest synthetic material.

Proceeds from ‘Eat Clay or Die!’ directly benefit the artists and Greenwich House Pottery’s educational programs which support emerging ceramic artists from age 4 through post-MFA residencies and beyond.
