ALICE COONEY FRELINGHUYSEN is the Anthony W. and Lulu C. Wang Curator of American Decorative Arts at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Her current projects include research for an upcoming publication on the recent Promised Gift of American Art Pottery, the Robert A. Ellison Jr. Collection. Installed in thirteen cases on the new mezzanine balcony of the Charles Engelhard Court in the American Wing, the Ellison Collection showcases an eighty-year continuum in the history of American ceramics from 1876 to 1954, representing a wide range of stylistic and technical achievements. The installation was part of the complete renovation of the Courtyard which she oversaw for the New American Wing, which opened this spring.
Ms. Frelinghuysen has published widely on the subject of American ceramics and glass with a special focus on the work of Louis Comfort Tiffany, including most recently, the exhibition and book, Louis Comfort Tiffany and Laurelton Hall— An Artist’s Country Estate, (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2007). C.: Victoria & Albert Museum and the National Gallery of Art, 2000); on the domestic interiors of Louis Comfort Tiffany for Louis C. Tiffany: Meisterwerke des amerikanischen Jugendstils (Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg, 1999).
