One Bequest Changes Many Lives
Over the years, Greenwich House has been the recipient of many bequests from individuals who remembered the organization or a program in their wills. The Music School, Pottery, Senior Center and the parent organization, Greenwich House, has benefited from people who’s connection to those programs and GH were so strong, they made the penultimate gift of including Greenwich House in their estate, right along with their family members and loved ones. Another program that has been a recipient of bequests is the Senior Health & Consultation Center (SHCC). Over a year ago, Judy Jones, the program’s director, was informed of a bequest designated to SHCC, by a former client of the program. The bequest language, as directed by the client* stipulated that the funds were to be used to help other program participants, particularly those with emergency or critical needs and had no other financial resources available to them. The funds were used for items and services such as dental and utility bills, rent arrears, a power scooter for a client who had difficulty walking, air conditioner, bed, mattress and bedding, and a long winter coat. Some of these clients were homebound due to physical limitations but for all of them, this one item or service meant security in their home or elimination of a financial burden they could not bear on their own. This is just one example of how a bequest can have an organization like Greenwich House and many individual lives long beyond our time on this earth. Bequests can be designated to a program of Greenwich House or to the organization to use where the need is greatest, known as an unrestricted or general bequest.
