Children’s Programs
GREENWICH HOUSE MUSIC SCHOOL provides a welcoming environment for parents to introduce their children to music, art and ballet. Within our supportive community, students develop new skills and unique ways to express themselves through the arts as they cultivate their imaginations. The teachers, who are artists and musicians themselves provide inspiration and guidance in an intimate setting. Classes have a relaxed and open atmosphere where learning is fun, challenging and creative.
Greenwich House Music School also provides an early childhood program, which meets three mornings each week. While maintaining a strong focus on music and art, we also incorporate emergent literacy, science activities and math skills to create a school-ready environment which values the importance of play as an essential aspect of learning. MUSIC, ART & PLAY FOR 3-YEAR-OLDS
The Music, Art and Play class is a safe and supportive community where children have the opportunity to explore and express themselves. We aspire to create an intimate atmosphere where the children feel comfortable while forming bonds with their teachers and peers. We believe that teachers should be inspiring friends who facilitate learning. Separation and socialization are very important to this age group, and the arts are excellent ways of working through these issues.
In music, children are exposed to movement, instruments, stories and games. Turn-taking, listening and setting boundaries are included in this process.
In art, we work either individually or on group projects with a wide variety of materials. We encourage the children to work at their own pace and enjoy trying new materials.
Every child leaves our program with a sense of their own abilities and a strong foundation for later learning. To view a pdf of the MAP flyer, click here.

MUSIC FOR AGES 3, 4 AND 5-6
Greenwich House Music School offers music classes for children from ages 3 through 6. These classes are based on the Dalcroze Eurhythmics approach, which was founded by Swiss music educator Emile Jacques-Dalcroze. This method encourages children to learn through rhythmic movement using the body. The exercises involve rhythmic games, singing, movement and playing small percussive instruments to initiate and develop their sensitivity to listening, singing and physical movement. Basic musical concepts are introduced.
MUSIC AT AGE 3
Children will be guided from parallel playing to interactive playing through a series of musical activities and rhythmic games. They also learn to match pitch, keep time and distinguish other musical nuances.
MUSIC AT AGE 4
Children will learn the connection between body and mind by relating their movements to musical concepts. They begin to recognize music symbols and connect them to the sounds they hear. They learn to distinguish different tempi, registers, melody directions and match pitch through recognition activities. They encourage each other to become improvisers rather than followers through rhythmic games, singing, dramatic play and playing small percussion instruments. Basic musical concepts and note reading are introduced.
MUSIC AT AGE 5-6
These lessons focus on musicianship and musical concepts through rhythmic exercises, singing and partaking in small percussion ensembles. It will give them a deeper understanding of the rhythmic patterns and musical concepts, which will enrich and complement the future study of an individual instrument.
