About BSNSGH
Barrow Street Nursery School is a progressive, child centered, downtown community nursery school that has been providing a warm and nurturing learning environment for over thirty years. We prepare children for Kindergarten by creating a challenging academic curriculum supporting self-expression, and social interaction.
The staff is committed to fostering a space where children leave with a curiosity for life and a respect for others. We have six sunny classrooms, a full sized gymnasium, running track (for riding tricycles) and a 3500 square foot rooftop playground.
We have a highly trained and experienced staff of teachers and specialists who offer a wide variety of enriched activities. There is a high student to teacher ratio, and we have a comprehensive phase in process to help our little Two’s settle into school. We also offer assistance with the on going kindergarten process.

Admission Priority: Siblings, Legacies, Children from our Me and My Special Grown Up classes
Me and My Special Grown Up Classes
Me and My Special Grown Up is a class offered for children 12-24 months old, it meets once a week for 10 weeks.
Whom is Me and My Special Grown Up Designed For?
Our class is designed for mobile children 12-24 months and their adult partners. As children experience new things through their senses, they look to the people they trust to make decisions about their surroundings.
What Will We Do In Class?
In our group we engage tiny tots and their grown-ups in sensory experiences together to faciliate trust. The classroom is set up so that young children can be active participants in their discoveries with water, textures, mirrors, shakers, grabbing, reaching, kicking and dumping. We will learn new songs and investigate physical principles. Your children will love crawling and climbing around in our tunnels and ball pool.
Whom Should Children Come To Class With?
Children are invited to come with parents, caregivers, grandparents or another loving grown-up. You have an indoor destination and a community of adults with whom to share your experiences. In addition, adults have the opportunity to observe their child during play with a professional's insight.
About the Class
- We do messy work, so please dress your child for play and bring a change of clothes.
- We have snack during class, so if your child has dietary resctrictions, please let us know.
- Spots will be secured on a first come, first serve basis.
- We will use the rooftop playground and gym on occasion.

Afterschool Classes*
*Classes range in price dependent on number of sessions.
Cooking
The children acquire basic cooking techniques and learn how to follow simple recipe instructions, such as measuring and mixing. Each week the children will be intrdocued to a new recipe that they can take home and share with their families. The children will be able to sample the food and, on certain occassions, bring food home to share with their families.
Science
What do children and rocket scientists have in common? They observe their world and ask questions about it, which is what scientific thought is all about! Our science program will provide opportunities for children to explore, hypothesize and experiment with their world while learning to use it in their everday lives.
TADA!
Our TADA! dram programs perform wonders by allowing children to explore voice, dance, acting and stage technique. More importantly, they will gain self-confidence and learn responsibility, communication and teamwork. The children learn these skills while having fun and discovering new ways to effectively express themselves.
Super Soccer Stars
Get the ball rolling! Super Soccer Stars is New York City's most popular soccer development program, right here at Barrow Street Nursery School! Dynamic international coaches work with every student to develop skills, self-confidence and teamwork, in a fun, non-competitive environment. Positive reinforcement and a low child-to-coach ratio ensure that each child will improve his or her soccer skills through engaging warm-ups, drills and games -- all while having endless fun!
Bilingual Birdies
The Bilingual Birdie Language Program employs a unique method that makes the rythm and sounds of a new language come alive through puppetry, singing and movement.
NEW INITIATIVE: Green Team
We are officially launching the Green Team to realize many new eco-friendly procedures. This will include changes in our snacks, cleaning supplies, art projects, conservation of water and electricity, reduction of paper usage and recycling of our used paper.
We will be encouraging "waste free" lunches in containers that can be washed and reused. We have already started a compost bin on the roof and will soon expand our recycled materials area.
We hope to empower our children to make a difference and teach them environmental and health values that will stay with them for life.
Additionally, we are collaborating with the organization Children for Children which advocates service learning in order to help support our Green Initiative.
This initiative was started by one of our parents.
