Exmissions
If you're ready to take this exciting step, check out these resources:
Barrow Street Nursery School provides a wonderful, solid beginning for our children.
We work hard to give them a strong educational foundation, and want to be sure they are placed in the right educational environment when they move into kindergarten.
So when it's time to think about the next step beyond BSNSGH, our teachers and staff are here to support and guide our families through the process because finding and applying to the right school for Kindergarten can be a daunting and time-consuming process for New York City families.

Most of our families live in the zone for either PS 3 and/or PS 41. We also have parents who are interested in applying to private schools as well as the gifted and talented public school programs. At BSNSGH we work very closely with our families who are participating in this process. Our work begins in the spring of the three’s program.
We invite all parents to an exmissions workshop. At this workshop we acquaint parents with the general information needed for applying to both private and public schools. Additionally, we do an observation of each child. This prepares us for an in-depth one-on-one conversation with each family regarding the future of the child's education. We do this in the spring of the threes program so that parents have the time they need before the fall to research the schools and prepare themselves for this process.
At BSNSGH we have built into our curriculum the skill developing activities that are important to the on-going schools. An ERB tester is assigned to BSNSGH for in-school testing. This relieves parents who are applying to private schools of the task of taking their child for a testing appointment. We offer a testing workshop to help parents understand the skills their children will need for kindergarten assessments(ERB, Stanford Binet, OLSAT).
After meeting with families in the spring a follow-up meeting is scheduled in the fall after parents have toured most of the schools they are applying to. The Director of BSNSGH is available to meet with parents on an as needed basis. We provide our families with the support and guidance needed during this process.
Kindergarten Placements
Public Schools
Based on the local public school zones where they reside, most of our families are eligible for PS 3 and/or PS 41. Many also apply to programs outside their zone, including the gifted and talented public school programs. Your child must turn five by December 31st of their Kindergarten year.
Private Schools
Most independent schools require applicants to take the ERB (educational assessment) test. An ERB administrator is assigned to BSNSGH for in-school testing, which relieves parents of the task of taking their child elsewhere for a testing appointment. It also allows the children to acquaint themselves with the tester, in order to increase comfort level. Barrow Street Nursery has excellent relationships with the downtown private and many other schools across the city. For most private schools your child must turn five by September 1st of their kindergarten year.
