Teacher’s Corner
Our talented and caring teachers bring their various experience, expertise and guidance to our nursery school.
Barrow Street believes it is essential to build on our teachers' extensive formal training with on going career development. Some of the workshops from this past year included a specialized science workshop, a child observation and recording workshop, and a block workshop. All of our teachers are CPR and First Aid Infant/Child Certified.
This past summer, most of the head teachers at Barrow Street attended a two-week conference in Reggio Emilia, Italy, to learn more about their philosophy. The Reggio Emilia philosophy is based on the principles of respect, responsibilityand community. These principles are learned through exploration and self-discovery in a supportive and enriching environment based on the interests of the children.
Barrow Street Nursery School has begun incorporating service learning into our curriculum by collaborating with Generation Go, a nonprofit advocacy organization specializing in this area. A workshop with their representatives led to an ongoing partnership in which our teachers helped to develop a collection of lesson plans for service-based learning and a guide for other nursery school teachers on how to incorporate service learning into the early childhood setting. Barrow Street is the model for other nursery schools exploring this important new dimension of their mission.
Our staff of highly trained teachers and assistants bring practical expertise, passion and commitment to their jobs. Our lead teachers hold Masters Degrees in education and many of our assistant teachers are enrolled in Masters Programs in New York City. Within our diverse teaching community we have a chef, a marathon runner, a gymnast, an ice-skater, a specialist in music, an avid botanist, a tennis player, several proud mothers, and much more who bring a love of learning and a wealth of talent to their work everyday!
Our teachers are thoroughly prepared with comprehensive lesson plans that implement the Barrow Street Nursery School philosophy and curriculum, and fulfill our promise to give all of the children a foundation for learning. Aditionally, our teachers send out email updates weekly and post photos online through Shutterfly so you can view your children engaging in their school activities.
