Sample Class Schedule
Here are descriptions of some of our daily activities.
Arrival
Children put belongings in cubbies, put their picture card in the pocket chart and write or trace their names on the sign-in sheet.
Open Time
During this time activities and materials are easily accessible, open-ended and regularly changed to appeal to a variety of interests and developmental levels. Children have the option of choosing an activity from the sensory, art or math manipulatives table. Another option they can choose is taking a puzzle or book to the rug.
Welcome Meeting
This large group activity formally begins the day through the use of introductory songs, calendar and weather and news sharing.
Roof/Gym/Track
Children play on the roof, gym, or track with a wide variety of age appropriate equipment, games and materials. In addition to outdoor equipment, the children also play with balls, hoops, mats, balance beams, games, tricycles, basketball, tee ball, etc.
Work Time
This time explores, investigates and consolidates knowledge around projects attuned to personal interests.
Music and Movement
Activities during music and movement time are dance, parachute, simple games, instruments, outside time and neighborhood .
Snack
A variety of snacks are distributed such as fresh fruit, crackers, cheese, and veggies. Occasionally, snacks prepared by the children as a math/science activity are served.
Work Center Time
Children engage in free play with their peers which allows them to make choices based on their own interests. Our centers include:
- a) Block Area develops shape and size discrimination, spatial relationships, balance, cause and effect, and cooperation.
- b) Dramatic Play helps children develop language in a variety of situation. Through role playing, they learn social skills appropriate to group behavior and explore different celebrations and customs. While engaging in creative dramatic activities children discover cause and effect, explore interaction of materials and learn to think symbolically.
- c) Art Area develops fine-motor skills, creative expression, risk-taking, understanding of color, shape and size relationships, self-esteem, visual perception and experience working in different media.
- d) Math and Science Area develops patterning, sequencing, one to one correspondence, observation, exploration, investigation, predicting, experimenting and classification.
- e) Puzzles and Games develop hand-eye coordination, classification, visual perception, problem-solving, social skills, and critical thinking skills.
- f) Sand/Water Table develops mathematical concepts such as measuring, language development (empty/full) and social skills.
- g) Library develops appreciation of literature, communication, sequencing and comprehension skills.
- h) Writing Center develops fine-motor skills, letter recognition, sequencing and creativity.
Story Time
A wide variety of books, poems and flannel board series are selected for group story telling according to the projects and interests of the children.
Goodbye Meeting
Before the day ends, we take time to talk about what the children learned, what next steps to anticipate and things they can explore in their community to expand knowledge.
