Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Legacy
Dear Greenwich House and Barrow Street Community,
Today, January 20, marks a confluence of two important days for our nation – a day to reflect on the profound legacy of justice, equity, and compassion that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. championed – and the amazing act of witnessing a peaceful transfer of power, which stands at the heart of our democracy.
As this new Presidential administration takes office, we remain steadfast in our commitment to the principles that have guided Greenwich House for more than a century: equity, tolerance, care, civic responsibility, and community. These principles are the foundation upon which we serve our neighbors and have sustained us throughout our history.
In his “Remaining Awake Through a Revolution” speech, Dr. King taught us that “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” The work of local organizations like Greenwich House is vital in helping bend that path. Together, we will continue empowering individuals in need, foster resilience through our programs, and create spaces where everyone is seen, heard, and valued – as we have for over 120 years.
I encourage you to honor Dr. King’s legacy by reflecting on how you can remain awake and contribute to building a more just and compassionate world—whether through acts of service, advocacy, or simply extending kindness to those around you.
Thank you for standing with us and being part of a community that believes in the transformative power of care and connection. Together, we will continue to move our lives, communities, and country forward.
With gratitude and hope,
Darren Bloch, Executive Director & CEO
