Celebrating Black History Month at Greenwich House

Dear Greenwich House and Barrow Street Nursery School Teams,

History has shown that the labor and contributions of Black Americans have been instrumental in building this country, yet too often undervalued. This year’s Black History Month theme—African Americans and Labor—reminds us that work has always been about more than just wages; it has been a tool for empowerment, resistance, and progress. From the fight for fair wages and labor rights to the ongoing pursuit of racial and economic justice, Black workers have long stood at the forefront of movements that have strengthened our country.

That fight continues today. Recent federal actions targeting diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) efforts threaten the progress generations of Black workers, organizers, and leaders have fought for. At Greenwich House and Barrow Street, DEIB isn’t a mandate—it’s a responsibility and an opportunity. Inclusivity is central to our work, our community, and our services. We remain committed to fostering a space where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. Championing diversity isn’t just about fairness—it strengthens our teams and deepens our impact.

This Black History Month let’s honor the contributions of Black Americans not just by reflecting on the past, but by actively engaging in learning and celebration. Kudos to the Older Adult Network for developing a lineup of Black History Month events for members, including film screenings and field trips to the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem. Let’s reaffirm our commitment to equity, opportunity, and justice in the work we do every day.

Thank you for all that you do to make our community stronger.

With appreciation,
