SUMMARY:Uncharted: Michela Marino Lerman
DESCRIPTION:Greenwich House Music School is pleased to present Michela Marino Lerman in its annual Uncharted Concert Series\, part of the Baisley Powell Elebash Artists in Residence Program.\nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.\nWebsite / Facebook / Instagram\n \nMichela Marino Lerman has been immersed in the art of tap dance since the age of five\, her journey shaped by some of the most influential masters of the craft. Her early performance experiences included dancing alongside Gregory Hines on Sesame Street while still in elementary school\, and she counts the legendary James “Buster” Brown among her mentors. As an honorary member of the Copasetics—a prestigious fraternity of tap dancers founded in 1949 in honor of Bill “Bojangles” Robinson—Lerman carries forward the rich legacy of tap in venues large and small\, from Jazz at Lincoln Center to her long-running jam session at Smalls. \nAs part of her Uncharted Residency\, Lerman will present Agape\, a performance exploring the concept of interdimensional love and the interconnectedness that stems from human understanding. Leading her group\, The Love Movement (featuring Russell Hall and Samir Langus)\, she fuses analog effects and digital samplers to engage in collective healing\, creating expressions of identity and joy as acts of resistance. Through her work\, Lerman continues to honor the tradition of tap while pushing its boundaries to explore new realms of creativity and connection. \nUncharted\, now in its eleventh year\, has been an invaluable resource for New York-based musicians to develop original material\, foster new collaborations\, and premiere first-look projects in an intimate concert setting.

SUMMARY:Holman Alvarez's Hidden Objects Album Release Concert
DESCRIPTION:Pianist/composer Holman Alvarez sees the world through a compositional lens. On his newest release\, Hidden Objects\, he leads an all-star band – Ralph Alessi on trumpet\, John Hébert on bass and Satoshi Takeishi on drums- through nine expressive\, serpentine compositions that reveal a unique musical worldview. In his playing\, there is a touching lyricism and forward-thinking harmony\, mixing warmth with the cerebral. And there are references to the Latin American rhythms and modern classical figures that are an innate part of Alvarez’s compositional and improvisational vocabulary.

SUMMARY:The Music of Alec Wilder in New York City
DESCRIPTION:An Annual Celebration of the Life and Music of Alec Wilder \nFeaturing prominent NYC musicians performing the instrumental solo\, chamber music and songs of Alec Wilder. \nAlec Wilder successfully bridged a diversity of styles\, writing fresh\, strong\, and lyrical music for a myriad of musicians with significant careers and reputations. His oeuvre includes popular songs\, art songs\, instrumental sonatas\, chamber music works\, compositions for large ensembles\, opera\, film scores\, and theater pieces. It is a normal human impulse to want to categorize and label objects to assume that one has reached a clarity of comprehension and understanding. However\, such categorizations can often be simplistic or even misleading. Alec Wilder’s music is a product of his life philosophies mingled with the sounds of his time; whether popular\, jazz\, or concert music. His merging of musical styles and genres is not unlike several of his fellow Americans such as George Gershwin or Leona rd Bernstein. His songs may appear in NYC night clubs as well as on formal voice recitals\, and his instrumental ensemble works enhance university recitals across the nation. He inserts canons into his jazz pieces\, warm popular harmonies into his art songs\, and syncopated jazz rhythms into his classical movements. His sound is uniquely Alec Wilder and distinctly American. Wilder valued beauty\, aesthetic integrity\, decency\, virtue\, wonderment\, and patience and deplored any decline of such values. He stated\, “My concern is to transmute the very best of myself into disciplined\, loving\, and if possible\, witty and civilized sound. I am interested in only those manifestations of art which\, in my estimation\, emerge from a profound need to create and an absolute in sistence upon a professional point of view.” Trusting his intuitive creative inclinations and merging minimal traditional music studies with an absorption of the current musical trends of his time\, Alec Wilder was able to produce music that is distinctively his own in concept and sound\, a worthy achievement indeed.

SUMMARY:Reflections in Music: Blue-Tinged Classics
DESCRIPTION:  \nFeaturing clarinetist Narek Arutyunian\, violinist Deborah Buck\, and composer-pianist Bruce Wolosoff. \nThroughout history\, classical music has continually revitalized itself by embracing fresh ideas and exploring diverse influences. Blue-Tinged Classics celebrates this tradition\, highlighting how the soulful\, emotive qualities of the blues have inspired classical compositions\, creating music that is both innovative and deeply rooted in tradition \nBeginning with George Gershwin’s pioneering fusion of blues and jazz into classical forms\, this influence traveled to Paris with composers like Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy incorporating the blues into some of their music\, then it reflected back stateside to America in the work of composers like Aaron Copland. It continues to resonate today with composers like Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson\, who infuses blues into his violin music. \nThis program also features two world premieres: a new work by renowned film composer Carter Burwell\, and Blue Mantra\, the latest composition by Reflections’ artistic director Bruce Wolosoff\, inspired by a painting by Margaret Garrett.
