SUMMARY:Cathy Lu: Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Cathy Lu will give a talk about the project she worked on during her summer fellowship at Greenwich House Pottery. \nCathy is a California-based artist who explores experiences of immigration and cultural hybridity from an Asian American point of view. Cathy creates sculptures and installations that often draw from traditional Chinese imagery and objects to problematize what it means to be both Asian and American without being fully accepted by either culture. She currently teaches ceramics at Mills College and California College of the Arts. \nCathy earned an MFA from San Francisco Art Institute in sculpture and ceramics\, and a BFA in ceramics and a BA in Chinese language\, history\, and culture from Tufts University. Lu has shown her work at the American Museum of Ceramic Art (Pomona\, CA; 2020)\, Front Gallery (New Orleans\, LA; 2019)\, A-B Projects (Los Angeles\, CA; 2019)\, and Irving Street Projects (San Francisco\, CA; CA; 2018)\, among others. Lu has held residencies at Bemis (Omaha\, NE; 2021)\, LPP+ at Minnesota Street Project (San Francisco\, CA; 2019)\, and Anderson Ranch Arts Center (Snowmass Village\, CO; 2016). \nDuring her fellowship\, Cathy will work on a project called American Dream Pillows\, inspired by a tradition in ancient China that believed that resting on specific pillows could influence both your dreams and your future. She will create ceramic pillows that meditate on Asian American experiences\, specifically the tension between the American dream and the lived experience. \nThis event is free and open to the public.\nRegister here. \n

SUMMARY:Dirty Work
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nPhoto credit: Alan Wiener. \nDirty Work\nItzel Alejandra\, Eric Preston Alexander\, Daniel Barragán\,\nSanié Bokhari\, Lizzy Chemel\, Jill Cohen-Nuñez\, Tracy Lee\,\nAndrés Monzón-Aguirre\, Didi Rojas\, Karen Tepaz\,\nAnastasia Warren\, Jinsik Yoo\ncurated by Edward Salas\nArtist Reception | Friday\, September 16\, 2022| 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.\nSeptember 9 – October 21\, 2022  \nThe Jane Hartsook Gallery is pleased to present a group exhibition of ceramic work by interdisciplinary New York City-based artists curated by Edward Salas. Each of the twelve artists uses the medium of ceramics as a vehicle to illuminate and unpack layered personal histories. Looking forward or backward in time\, the artists are working to understand the present and create hybrid artifacts that will help future generations understand our complex histories. \nClay is not an easy medium to work with in New York City. It is a material that requires resources that are often scarce like space\, kilns\, transportation and funds. In a city where histories are constantly being erased and rebuilt clay can be a medium to unearth the past\, make sense of the present and converse with the future. Clay’s deep association with the past and its broad history of use by ancient cultures around the world makes it the perfect medium for contemporary artists to mine when engaging their own personal histories. Clay has a memory and the maker’s hand is inextricably part of the work. Some artists in this show look back and connect to ancient ways of making and motifs\, remixing ideas for the complexities of our contemporary moment. Other artists use ceramics for its malleability\, a characteristic that enables them to express the fleeting present. All of the artists in this show are tapping into a medium that holds many histories\, making topical objects for the present and relics for the future. This is the dirty work that artists do.

SUMMARY:Beth Campbell Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Beth Campbell will give an in-person talk about the project she is working on during her residency at Greenwich House Pottery. \nBeth is a New York-based artist who creates drawings\, sculptures\, and architectural interventions that challenge our perception of the world by reworking everyday objects in surprising or startling ways. She employs mass-produced consumer items\, often in repetition\, to make apparent the way we use these items to construct our identities. \nBeth earned her MFA from Ohio University and her BFA from Truman State University. Campbell’s work has been shown at Kate Werble Gallery (New York\, NY; 2019)\, The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum (Ridgefield\, CT; 2017)\, the Whitney Museum of Art (New York\, NY; 2007)\, the Brooklyn Museum of Art (New York; 2004)\, and White Columns (New York\, NY; 2000)\, among others. She has held residencies at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center (Sheboygan\, WI; 2009) and the Lower East Side Print Shop (New York\, NY; 2006). \nDuring her residency\, Beth is experimenting with doing “burn outs” where she will coat natural materials in clay and then fire them so the organic material burns away but leaves its form and texture behind in ceramic. Beth is also experimenting with tinting porcelain slip with colorants to achieve different colorful surfaces. \nThis event is free and open to the public.\nIt will take place in-person at Greenwich House Pottery\, 16 Jones Street\, NYC.

SUMMARY:Wansoo Kim: Vessels
DESCRIPTION:Wansoo Kim\, “A Pot Growing from Me”\, stoneware\, 14” x 14” x 23”\, 2019. Photo: courtesy of the artist. \nWansoo Kim: Vessels\nArtist Talk | November 4\, 2022 | 4:00 – 5:00 p.m.\nIn-Person Reception | November 4\, 2022 | 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.\nExhibition on view through December 16\, 2022 \nThe Jane Hartsook Gallery is pleased to present a solo show by Wansoo Kim. In his New York City debut\, Kim joins traditional and contemporary vessel forms with unconventional ornamentation to encourage us to think about metaphysical dichotomies such as what is visible versus invisible\, internal versus external\, and known versus unknown. Kim inverts what would typically be the inside and the outside of the vessels by embellishing the interiors with hand-painted designs or high reliefs. These designs draw in the viewer\, while the height and narrowness of the vessels restrict full access to them\, reminding us to think about what we choose to withhold or divulge in our lives and how much of the world around us is beyond our perception. \n  \nKim is a Tennessee-based artist who earned his MFA from the University of Nebraska and his BFA from Seoul National University of Science and Technology. Recent solo exhibitions include Watkins College of Art at Belmont University (Nashville\, TN; 2022)\, The New Gallery at Austin Peay State University (Clarksville\, TN; 2021)\, and E. Bronson Ingram Studio Arts Center (Nashville\, TN; 2020). He is an assistant professor of ceramics at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville\, Tennessee.

SUMMARY:A Figure Enters
DESCRIPTION:Photo: Alan Wiener\, courtesy Greenwich House Pottery 2023. \nA Figure Enters\nPaul Narkiewicz\ncurated by Megan Mi-Ai Lee\nIn-Person Reception | Friday\, January 20\, 2023 | 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.\nJanuary 13 – February 24\, 2023 \nThe Jane Hartsook Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of work by Paul Narkiewicz\, curated by Megan Mi-Ai Lee. In the past ten years\, Narkiewicz has created over 600 iterations of an abstract human figure in clay. Inflected by his background in painting and printmaking\, each figure is composed of individual slabs of clay that are textured\, pigmented\, cut\, and assembled into distinct figures using nichrome wire. This exhibition brings together a selection of these sculptures\, representing an overview of his production and stylistic evolution over the past decade\, and presents them with a group of his watercolors capturing the Italian countryside from the 1970s. \nPaul Narkiewicz is a New York-based artist. Narkiewicz earned his BFA from Philadelphia College of Art\, and has been working in ceramics at Greenwich House Pottery since 2010. Exhibitions of his work include Laurence Miller Gallery (New York\, NY; 2015\, 2016)\, Socrates Sculpture Park (Long Island City\, NY; 1987)\, and Kornblee Gallery (New York\, NY; 1981). His work is held in numerous collections\, including the Brooklyn Museum\, the Princeton University Art Museum\, the RISD Museum\, and the University of the Arts (formerly Philadelphia College of Art). A master printmaker\, Narkiewicz collaborated with many artists on their lithograph and etching editions\, including Romare Bearden\, Alex Katz and Ellsworth Kelly. \nMegan Mi-Ai Lee is an artist based in Queens\, New York. She earned her BFA from the Cooper Union School of Art in 2018. Lee has held residencies at Ox-Bow School of Art\, Storm King Art Center\, and Smack Mellon\, and was the 2018 Curatorial Fellow at Socrates Sculpture Park. Recent exhibitions of her work include Godwin-Ternbach Museum (Flushing\, NY; 2022)\, Art Lot (Brooklyn\, NY; 2022)\, and Park View/Paul Soto (Los Angeles\, CA; 2020). Lee is currently the Education Manager at Greenwich House Pottery. \n  \nImages: Alan Wiener\, courtesy Greenwich House Pottery 2023.

SUMMARY:Sara Nishikawa In-Person Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Sara Nishikawa\nWednesday\, February 1\, 2023\nIn-Person Artist Talk\, 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. \nSara Nishikawa will give an in-person talk about the project she is working on during her residency at Greenwich House Pottery. \nSara Nishikawa is an artist whose work focuses on domestic objects\, the intersection between designed tools and food\, and on the relationship objects have with narrative. What does it mean to live in a world that not only has melon ballers\, but also ice cube trays designed to make ice the perfect size for a specific water bottle? In addition to her art practice\, Nishikawa was recently Co-Director of the BULK Space Artist Residency and currently runs the Mostly Butter artist residency. \nNishikawa is based in Detroit. She earned her MFA in ceramics from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, her MA in ceramics from California State University Northridge\, and her BA in psychology at Loyola Marymount University. Recent exhibitions include Spaysky Fine Art Gallery LLC (Chicago\, IL; 2022)\, Greenwich House Pottery (New York\, NY; 2021)\, and Korean International Ceramic Biennale (Gyeonggi\, South Korea; 2019). \nDuring her GHP residency\, Nishikawa will create hyper-specific dishes for her favorite foods—the foods her grandma made for her. Together\, these foods will create a self-portrait of the artist. Nishikawa will carry out research in New York City’s grocery stores and restaurants and then create dishes or holders for each food. The series may include a set for a piece of har gow with a dipping container\, a holder for homemade rice crispy treats\, or a dish for the uneaten pit of a mango. \nThis event is free and open to the public.\nIt will take place in-person at Greenwich House Pottery\, 16 Jones Street\, NYC.

This exhibition showcases the artistic range of makers\, each of whom uses the Pottery’s extensive resources to express their own creative voice in clay. From functional ceramics to sculpture\, this exhibition is as diverse and as interesting as the artists themselves. \nGreenwich House Pottery has been supporting artists and their projects since 1904. Since our first clay classes for neighborhood youth to our present-day educational program\, lecture series\, artist residency program\, and exhibition series\, we have been promoting the field of ceramics. We serve more than 400 artists and students per term who learn from professional faculty and staff proficient in a range of topics from wheel throwing\, hand-building\, and mold-making to glaze chemistry and slip casting. GHP also hosts workshops and lectures by leading ceramic artists from around the country and offers children the opportunity to work in clay through Greenwich House’s Youth Community Center. The artists in this exhibition represent the continuous achievement\, exploration and passion for ceramic arts that GHP has fostered for over 118 years.

SUMMARY:Hongmi Kim Hoog Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nHongmi Kim Hoog\nWednesday\, April 12\, 2023\nIn-Person Artist Talk\, 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. \nHongmi Kim Hoog will give an in-person talk about the project she is working on during her residency at Greenwich House Pottery. \nHongmi Kim Hoog is an artist who creates vessel forms by layering earthenware\, stoneware\, and porcelain to create unique visual patterns. For Kim Hoog\, the juxtaposition of different clay bodies emphasizes the natural beauty of each material and is a metaphor for the benefits of diversity. \nKim Hoog is based in New Jersey. She earned her MFA in ceramics from The City College of New York\, her MA in studio art from New York University\, and her BFA in ceramics from Ewha University. Kim Hoog’s work has recently been shown at the Indianapolis Art Center (IN; 2022)\, the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts (TX; 2022)\, and the Cape Cod Museum of Art (MA; 2021). \nDuring her residency\, Kim Hoog will continue her layered-clay vessel series. Often referred to as agateware\, nerikomi\, or neriage—depending on the methods and the art historical tradition an artist is referencing—this technique is exceedingly difficult. She will hone her technical skills and experiment with new forms during her spring residency.
