SUMMARY:Curator-Led Tour: Derek Weisberg\, A Form of Reverence
DESCRIPTION:Ruth Duckworth\, “Untitled”\, porcelain\, 4″ x 5 ¾ ” x 3 1/8 “\, 2002. \nCurator-Led Tour: Derek Weisberg\nSaturday\, June 13\, 2026\nIn-Person Curator-Led Tour\, 3:00 – 4:00 p.m.\nJoin us on June 13 for a curator-led tour of the current Jane Hartsook Gallery exhibition\, A Form of Reverence\, by the exhibition’s curator\, Derek Weisberg. \nThe nine artists featured in this exhibition use the alchemic nature of clay to embody “reverence” in physical form. With modern pressures to prioritize information over wisdom and convenience above all else\, many of us seldom consider the magnitude of existence or our role within it. We have lost our sense of awe at being part of an immense\, inextricably connected universe that teems with mystery. The work in this exhibition gives form to the reverence we forget to seek\, but can always find\, in the grace\, the beauty\, the vastness of creation. \nHear more about the individual artworks and the curatorial vision behind A Form of Reverence by joining this curator-led walk through of the exhibition. \nThe talk is free and open to the public with RSVP.

SUMMARY:Pitchers of American Life: Art Within Reach\, a book talk with Ezra Shales
DESCRIPTION:Greenwich House Pottery is pleased to welcome Ezra Shales to the Greenwich House Theater to present his new book Pitchers of American Life: Art Within Reach. \nPitchers of American Life: Art Within Reach explores the tactile pleasures of drinking vessels and traces the role of these objects as representative art and collective tools—episodes of American history that resonate today in our everyday lives and yearnings for sociability and communion. Discussion ranges from vessels within ancient cultures and religious and family rituals to the growth of mass production and contemporary consumer culture. Shales blends the social histories of art/artifacts with memories of working on a museum installation crew\, educating students and himself\, and finding a treasure in a yard sale; in each chapter he interprets a single object as a revealing time capsule. Might learning to love a chipped old jug be a better way to cope with aging than other prescriptions? This history of art in a cupboard can liberate us from the usual hierarchies of civilization and the expense of the Grand Tour to build compassion with our immense amount of old stuff. \n \nEzra Shales is Professor in the History of Art department at Massachusetts College of Art and Design and the author of The Shape of Craft (2017) and Made in Newark: Cultivating Industrial Arts and Civic Identity in the Progressive Era (2010). He has contributed to exhibition catalogs for artists Polly Apfelbaum\, Neil Brownsword\, Beth Cavener\, Kim Dickey\, and Shari Mendelson. He cut his teeth in New York City’s flea-markets and working as an art handler and then an educator at the Brooklyn Museum\, which turned him into a chinamaniac\, aesthetic gadfly\, and lifelong scribbler. His newest book Pitchers of American Life: Art Within Reach condenses forty years of learning and ten dedicated to teaching ceramic history at Alfred\, the New York State College of Ceramics\, with the existential tailspins of being a devotee to material culture in an era of hyper affluence. His vision of design/craft/art intersecting is a deliberately provocative strategy to move beyond inherited limitations. \nA book can be purchased in advance from Bloomsbury. \nThis event is free and open to all. Please register in advance to reserve a seat. \nThis event is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature\, and\, in part\, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. \nAdditional support is generously provided by the Windgate Foundation\, and The Milton and Sally Avery Arts Foundation.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Janisse Gracia
DESCRIPTION:Janisse Gracia\nWednesday\, May 27\, 2026\nIn-Person Artist Talk\, 4:00 – 5:00 p.m.\nJanisse Gracia will give an in-person talk about the project she is working on on during her residency at Greenwich House Pottery. \nGracia is a Los Angeles-based artist who explores the emotional power we invest in our daily routines. By recreating the items central to those tasks\, Gracia meditates on the way these objects become vessels for memory\, comfort\, and transformation. Through repetitive making processes—rolling coils\, pinching patterns\, paddling forms—she pays homage to the repeated daily processes that invest these objects with their emotional power. \nGracia earned her MFA and BA from California State University\, Northridge. Recent exhibitions include Pio Pico (Los Angeles\, CA; 2025)\, Plains Art Museum (Fargo\, ND; 2023)\, and Applied Contemporary (Oakland\, CA; 2020). She currently serves as Executive Director of Green & Bisque Clayhouse in Pasadena. \n\nDuring her residency\, Gracia is exploring how uprooting herself to temporarily live in New York City has changed her understanding of the way care\, ritual\, and adaptation can be embedded into objects. She will probe how unfamiliar surroundings impact her relationship with the items of her daily routines\, and create a new body of handbuilt sculptures. Gracia will incorporate fabric into her finished ceramic work to create a dialog between softness and structure\, mirroring the dichotomy wrapped up in this new experience. \n\nThe talk is free and open to the public with RSVP.

SUMMARY:From Service to Social Change: A Conversation on the Settlement House
DESCRIPTION:Settlement houses have long been more than providers of social services – they were\, and still are\, incubators of progressive ideas\, civic action\, and policy change. Inspired by the release of Betty Boyd Caroli’s new book\, A Slumless America: Mary K. Simkhovitch and the Dream of Affordable Housing\, this conversation explores how the settlement house movement shaped public housing reform\, strengthened local communities\, and helped lay the groundwork for today’s social safety net.  \nAbout the Panel: \n\nOpening Remarks: Brad Hoylman-Sigal\, Manhattan Borough President\nModerator: Darren Bloch\, Executive Director and CEO of Greenwich House\nPanelists:\n\nBetty Boyd Caroli\, Historian and Author \nRoderick Jones\, President of Goddard Riverside\nSusan Stamler\, Executive Director of United Neighborhood Houses\nRosemonde Pierre-Louis\, Executive Director of the McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research at NYU\n\n\n\nGrounded in Greenwich House’s history as a leader in community-based research and advocacy\, the discussion connects early settlement house innovations to today’s challenges – highlighting how these institutions continue to serve as spaces for community-led change\, justice\, and civic participation.  \nThe discussion highlights how settlement houses continue to serve as spaces where research informs action\, communities organize for change\, and local experience shapes policy. \nRefreshments and light fare will be provided.  \nRegistration is required – free to attend. *Must take two flights of stairs to reach the event space. \n\n\n \n

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Amir Hariri
DESCRIPTION:Amir Hariri\nWednesday\, November 12\, 2025\nIn-Person Artist Talk\, 4:00 – 5:00 p.m.\nAmir Hariri will give an in-person talk about the project he is working on on during his residency at Greenwich House Pottery. \nHariri is a New York City-based artist and engineer who deconstructs the world around him to create abstract artwork and interventions that respond to contemporary challenges such as the pandemic and climate change. Inspired by individual and collective memories\, and a childhood of exploring abandoned buildings\, Hariri uses the language of decomposition and decay to transform the familiar and question our experiences and sense of history. \nHariri earned his Master of Engineering degree from Cornell University. After a decade working on design projects from concert halls and museums to glass designs for Apple\, he went on to study painting and printmaking at the Art Students League. His work is in public and private collections in the United States\, Italy\, Spain\, Hong Kong\, and Japan. Recent exhibitions of his work include Atamian Hovsepian Curatorial Practice (New York\, NY; 2024)\, PS122 Gallery (New York\, NY; 2023)\, and Wave Hill (Bronx\, NY; 2019). Hariri has participated in residencies at NARS Foundation\, the Museum of Arts and Design\, and the Children’s Museum of Manhattan. \nDuring his residency\, Hariri will expand his knowledge of handbuilding\, wheel-throwing\, and casting techniques\, and investigate how wood scaffolding and cement can be combined with these ceramic forms to create hybrid sculptures. Hariri will use the residency as a space for experimentation\, with the final aim of creating a site-responsive multimedia sculpture. \nThe talk is free and open to the public with RSVP.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Melissa Joseph
DESCRIPTION:Melissa Joseph\nWednesday\, May 21\, 2025\nIn-Person Artist Talk\, 4:00 – 5:00 p.m.\nMelissa Joseph will give an in-person talk about the project she is working on on during her residency at Greenwich House Pottery. \n\nJoseph is a New York City-based interdisciplinary artist whose art practice in craft-based media—especially ceramics and textiles—addresses themes of diaspora\, family history\, and the politics of how we occupy spaces. Joseph is particularly interested in connecting people through collective memory and shared experiences. \nJoseph earned an MFA from Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts\, an MAT from Rhode Island School of Design and a BA from New York University. Her work has been shown at Margot Samel (New York\, NY; 2023)\, Independent Art Fair (New York\, NY; 2023)\, and NADA Miami (Florida; 2021)\, among others. Joseph has participated in residencies including at Artpace San Antonio (San Antonio\, TX; 2024)\, the Archie Bray Foundation (Helena\, MT; 2022) and The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts (New York\, NY; 2021). \nDuring her residency\, Joseph will create ceramic inlay paintings that are an interpretation of the visual languages she uses in felt and paper. She will particularly focus on the technical side of constructing work from varied clay bodies and work to expand the size of these clay paintings. In addition to translating her visual language into clay\, Joseph will also create felt/ceramic hybrid works. \n\nThe talk is free and open to the public with RSVP.

DESCRIPTION:Lizzy Chemel\nThursday\, March 6\, 2025\nIn-Person Artist Talk\, 5:00 – 6:00 p.m.\nLizzy Chemel will give an in-person talk about the project she is working on on during her residency at Greenwich House Pottery. \n\nChemel is a New York City-based artist who makes sculptures in ceramic\, found materials\, wax\, bronze\, and cement. She uses mold-making to combine unlike objects that draw from her curiosity about undocumented ancestry. Adopted from Southern China and raised in California\, Chemel’s works are influenced by ancient Chinese artifacts\, translations\, and folklore\, as well as memories and iconography of her American upbringing. \nDuring her residency\, Chemel will continue developing a series of plaster molds that draw inspiration from the intersection of traditional Chinese culture and Hollywood kitsch. Her work will involve slip-casting from a range of molds\, including both direct life-casts of objects such as pig feet and stones\, as well as once-familiar items like Lincoln Logs that have been manipulated\, combined\, and resized. \nChemel earned her MFA in sculpture from New York University. Recent exhibitions include: Night Club Gallery (Minneapolis\, MN; 2023)\, Hyacinth Gallery (New York\,NY; 2023) Jane Hartsook Gallery (New York\, NY; 2022) \, 80WSE (New York\, NY; 2022)\, and Conduit Gallery (Ridgewood\, NY; 2021). She was a resident at A-Z West\, and is currently a studio assistant for Simone Leigh. \n\nThe talk is free and open to the public with RSVP.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Gina Tibbott
DESCRIPTION:Gina Tibbott\nTuesday\, January 28\, 2025\nIn-Person Artist Talk\, 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. \nGina Tibbott will give an in-person talk about the project she worked on during her residency at Greenwich House Pottery. \nGina Tibbott is a New York City-based artist whose ceramics practice is informed by her years working as a field archeologist. Other materials like metal\, fiber\, and wood usually degrade\, leaving only the barest of traces\, but ceramics can survive thousands of years in harsh conditions to be unearthed almost unchanged. Tibbott draws inspiration from the forms and decorative styles of these time-traveling ceramics. \nDuring her residency\, Tibbott used Gisela Richter’s The Craft of Athenian Pottery published in 1923 as a jumping off point to create new work based on ancient forms. When it was first published\, this book was notable in the field of archeology for taking a process-based approach to understanding ancient ceramics. To accomplish this task\, Richter turned to Maude Robinson\, GHP’s director from 1911 to 1941\, to provide the technical insight necessary for the book. Thus\, Tibbott collaborated not only with ancient Athenian potters through her project\, but also with the Pottery’s first director. \nThe talk is free and open to the public.\nNo registration necessary.

SUMMARY:Hongmi Kim Hoog Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nHongmi Kim Hoog\nWednesday\, April 12\, 2023\nIn-Person Artist Talk\, 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. \nHongmi Kim Hoog will give an in-person talk about the project she is working on during her residency at Greenwich House Pottery. \nHongmi Kim Hoog is an artist who creates vessel forms by layering earthenware\, stoneware\, and porcelain to create unique visual patterns. For Kim Hoog\, the juxtaposition of different clay bodies emphasizes the natural beauty of each material and is a metaphor for the benefits of diversity. \nKim Hoog is based in New Jersey. She earned her MFA in ceramics from The City College of New York\, her MA in studio art from New York University\, and her BFA in ceramics from Ewha University. Kim Hoog’s work has recently been shown at the Indianapolis Art Center (IN; 2022)\, the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts (TX; 2022)\, and the Cape Cod Museum of Art (MA; 2021). \nDuring her residency\, Kim Hoog will continue her layered-clay vessel series. Often referred to as agateware\, nerikomi\, or neriage—depending on the methods and the art historical tradition an artist is referencing—this technique is exceedingly difficult. She will hone her technical skills and experiment with new forms during her spring residency.

SUMMARY:Sara Nishikawa In-Person Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Sara Nishikawa\nWednesday\, February 1\, 2023\nIn-Person Artist Talk\, 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. \nSara Nishikawa will give an in-person talk about the project she is working on during her residency at Greenwich House Pottery. \nSara Nishikawa is an artist whose work focuses on domestic objects\, the intersection between designed tools and food\, and on the relationship objects have with narrative. What does it mean to live in a world that not only has melon ballers\, but also ice cube trays designed to make ice the perfect size for a specific water bottle? In addition to her art practice\, Nishikawa was recently Co-Director of the BULK Space Artist Residency and currently runs the Mostly Butter artist residency. \nNishikawa is based in Detroit. She earned her MFA in ceramics from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, her MA in ceramics from California State University Northridge\, and her BA in psychology at Loyola Marymount University. Recent exhibitions include Spaysky Fine Art Gallery LLC (Chicago\, IL; 2022)\, Greenwich House Pottery (New York\, NY; 2021)\, and Korean International Ceramic Biennale (Gyeonggi\, South Korea; 2019). \nDuring her GHP residency\, Nishikawa will create hyper-specific dishes for her favorite foods—the foods her grandma made for her. Together\, these foods will create a self-portrait of the artist. Nishikawa will carry out research in New York City’s grocery stores and restaurants and then create dishes or holders for each food. The series may include a set for a piece of har gow with a dipping container\, a holder for homemade rice crispy treats\, or a dish for the uneaten pit of a mango. \nThis event is free and open to the public.\nIt will take place in-person at Greenwich House Pottery\, 16 Jones Street\, NYC.
