SUMMARY:Ceramics Now 2022
DESCRIPTION:Alva Mooses\, Composition IV\, Composition V\, ceramic\, 2022-2023. \nCeramics Now\nBeth Campbell\, Cathy Lu\,\nAlva Mooses\, Shellyne Rodriguez\nJuly 14 – Aug 18\, 2023\nIn- Person Artist Reception: July 14\, 2023 | 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.\nNEW YORK – The Jane Hartsook Gallery is pleased to present work by our 2022 fellows and artists in residence: Beth Campbell\, Cathy Lu\, Alva Mooses\, and Shellyne Rodriguez. Our Residency and Fellowship program fosters artistic growth by providing makers with a creative community\, time\, space and materials to explore and generate new bodies of work in ceramics in vibrant New York City. \nBeth Campbell is a New York-based artist who creates drawings\, sculptures\, and architectural interventions that challenge our perception of the world by reworking everyday objects in surprising or startling ways. She employs mass-produced consumer items\, often in repetition\, to make apparent the way we use these items to construct our identities. During her residency\, Campbell experimented with doing “burn outs” where she coated natural materials in clay and then fired them so the organic material burns away but leaves its form and texture behind in ceramic. \n Cathy Lu is a California-based artist who explores experiences of immigration and cultural hybridity from an Asian American point of view. Lu creates sculptures and installations that often draw from traditional Chinese imagery and objects to problematize what it means to be both Asian and American without being fully accepted by either culture. During her fellowship\, Lu worked on a project called American Dream Pillows\, inspired by pillows made during the Tang dynasty that were believed to be able to influence both the dreams and the future of the user. She created ceramic pillows that meditated on Asian American experiences\, specifically the tension between the American dream and the lived experience. \nAlva Mooses is an interdisciplinary artist. Her works across printed media\, ceramics\, and sculpture question how colonialism and capitalism have marked land\, language\, and human migration. She engages with earth-based materials to create an index of place and signal the memory of geological time. During her residency\, Mooses developed a body of work based on a globe of the earth which she reconfigured in slip-cast porcelain. She experimented with multiple kiln firings and magma glazes resulting in an array of colors and textures. Her ceramic sculptures move away from the historical representation of the earth as a perfect sphere on a steady axis; toward a transformative body that centers on the materiality of clay. \nShellyne Rodriguez is a Bronx-based artist\, educator\, writer\, and community organizer who works in a variety of media\, including drawing\, painting\, collage\, and sculpture. Rodriguez pairs the aesthetics of the Baroque and of hip-hop culture to depict the contemporary conditions of alienation and perseverance\, especially as it relates to her community in the South Bronx. During her residency\, Rodriguez created a series of ceramic reliefs that focused on the disappearing and increasingly dispossessed people and places of her community in the South Bronx. \nImages below: Alan Wiener\, courtesy Greenwich House Pottery 2023.

SUMMARY:Grant Landreth In-Person Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:  \nGrant Landreth\nWednesday\, August 2\, 2023\nIn-Person Artist Talk\, 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. \nGrant Landreth will give an in-person talk about the project they are working on during their residency at Greenwich House Pottery. \nGrant Landreth is a New York City-based artist who grew up going to quilting bees and experiencing the dramatic sunsets of the Great Plains. Their work is made from the detritus found on NYC streets: cardboard\, trash bags\, fashion\, and furniture.  They remake these unnatural wonders of capitalistic waste to create new patterns and forms using traditional sewing\, weaving\, and ceramics techniques. \nJoin us for their artist talk on August 2 at GHP!\nThe talk is free and open to the public. No registration necessary.

SUMMARY:Julie Gold: Closing the Distance
DESCRIPTION:An intimate evening of songs and stories with the inimitable Julie Gold\, Greenwich Village’s own Grammy winner\, a singer-songwriter known the world over for “From a Distance\,” a song which has been read into the Congressional Record and which was used to wake up the astronauts on the Mir Space Station the very first time the Americans hooked up with the Russians in outer space. Join Julie – a wonderful raconteur as well as songwriter – for a very special evening.  \nWho doesn’t know “From a Distance\,” a song that’s now a part of our DNA. A dream of better times\, a prayer even.  \nJulie Gold came to the Village in 1978\, in pursuit of her own dream of becoming a songwriter. Bohemia was no longer cheap\, and she worked endless jobs to keep afloat. Just before her 30th birthday\, the piano she’d grown up playing was dispatched from Philadelphia by her parents.  \n“I took the day off work to be home when my piano arrived\, and I remember how it glistened in the sun as the movers lowered it off the truck. My piano. My truest love and friend. My confidante. Back together again after all these years. It came into my little\, one room apartment and fit just where I hoped it would. The movers told me that it had been on the truck for 24 hours\, so I had to give it a chance to settle. They said I couldn’t play it for a full day. So\, there we were in the same room\, unable to make music….  \n“The next day I sat down and ‘From a Distance’ just poured out of me. On one hand\, it took me two hours to write. On the other hand\, it took me 30 years. Pick whichever hand makes you happy. I love them both.”  \nThe rest\, as they say\, is history. Nanci Griffith recorded it on her debut album and on June 16\, 1988\, Julie and Nanci played Carnegie Hall. “All my relatives came up from Philadelphia to share the miracle… In many ways\, I am their American Dream. What an amazing dream it is. As I write this\, I can’t even believe it’s true. But it is. It really is.”  \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Kate Strachan In-Person Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Kate Strachan\nTuesday\, September 26\, 2023\nIn-Person Artist Talk\, 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. \nNCECA emerging artist Kate Strachan will give an in-person artist talk about her art practice. \nKate Strachan is an interdisciplinary artist\, whose clay work integrates various materials such as fiber\, wax\, and wood to form manuscripts\, sculpture\, installations\, and video art. The doctrine of her Pennsylvania Dutch roots forms a basis on which layers of femininity\, dark humor and questioning are all orchestrated together. Kate’s work is viewed as a collection of both relics and texts conveying and preserving the routine of action\, sexuality and silence. \nShe earned a BFA from the Fashion Institute of Technology SUNY with a focus on fiber. After a drastic career change Kate became apprentice for two years in Kanazawa\, Ishikawa Japan. It was there she was able to connect with her sensitives to beauty\, touch and austerity. Following her apprenticeship\, she relocated to Taiwan to complete her MFA at the Tainan National University of the Arts. \nWhile working both in Asia and the US\, she is a recipient of 2020 Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park Exchange (supported by the Agency for Cultural Affairs Japan)\, 2023 NCECA’s Emerging Artist Award\, and\, most recently\, has been awarded a scholarship for 2024 EKWC Residency (Supported by the Dutch Government). In 2022\, her work was selected for Taiwan’s Yingge Ceramic Museum Biennial. \nThe talk is free and open to the public. No registration necessary.
