SUMMARY:Sound It Out: Mike Baggetta Trio
DESCRIPTION:This double-bill presents two of Sound It Out’s favorite guitarists: Mike Baggetta and Nick Millevoi. Mike returns to the series to lead his atmospheric trio featuring bass guitarist Jerome Harris and drummer Billy Mintz. Wilco guitar hero Nels Cline has hailed Mike as “a guitar-poet\,” while The New York Times has said: “Mike Baggetta makes stealthy\, mysterious music… He’s trying to do something personal with improvisation without ever getting in the way of beauty.” The trio’s “Spectre” album is a rare gem. Doing double-duty\, Mike will also be opening up the night in a duo with Nick Millevoi\, another six-string individualist who has rocked Greenwich House on numerous occasions. NPR has described Nick’s guitar in full flight as “like a rocket darting skyward between clouds.” Guitar fans shouldn’t miss this show! \nTickets: $15 ($12 students/seniors) at the door

SUMMARY:Simple Moldmaking Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This one-day\, hands-on workshop will introduce you to working with plaster to make a one-part slump mold. This is also the perfect opportunity to make a customized mold\, such as a mold with a built-in foot.\nIf time permits you will be able to make more than one mold.\n\n\n\nRegistration is limited to currently enrolled students who have taken paperclay this year at GHP. If there is space\, other GHP students will be welcome to register.\n\n\n\nRequired supplies for this class: \n\nPlease bring a suitable form from which you’ll make your mold\, your clay tools and a dust mask. For those currently registered in paperclay\, you will discuss if your object is suitable for this kind of mold in class. If you are not currently registered in paperclay you may contact the instructor prior to the workshop to clarify your idea.

SUMMARY:Sound It Out: Angelica Sanchez\, Tony Malaby & Tom Rainey
DESCRIPTION:The telepathic trio of keyboardist Angelica Sanchez\, saxophonist Tony Malaby & drummer Tom Rainey make their long-awaited return to Greenwich House to kick off 2020 and the eighth year of the Sound It Out series. Angie will bring along her funky Wurlitzer electric keyboard to evoke the two fantastic live albums the trio made 15 years ago\, “Alive in Brooklyn\, Vols. 1 & 2\,” unsung classics of buzzing\, riveting improvisation that All About Jazz rightly hailed as “exuberant and enthralling.” \nAngie\, Tony and Tom are each renowned masters of the music\, whether leading their own various bands or playing with the cream of the New York jazz scene. About their trio\, Tom says: “It sounds simple to say\, but the three of us have real creative chemistry together. Chemistry is the difference between just a group of good musicians playing in a room and something magical happening together. Tony and Angie are like musical family to me. I’ve been playing in various groups with Tony for more than 20 years now. There’s so much depth to what he does\, and it gets deeper all the time. Angie’s personality really comes out in her writing as well as her playing – this honesty and generosity of spirit lives in the music. For my part\, I want to contribute to the collective\, to keep it going and do what I can to always make the music special.” \nTickets: $20 ($15 students/seniors) at the door

SUMMARY:City Wide\, Carly Slade
DESCRIPTION:City Wide\nCarly Slade\nOpening Reception | Friday\, January 10\, 2020 | 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.\nArtist Talk | Friday\, January 10\, 2020 | 4:00 – 5:00 p.m.\nMaster Series Workshop | February 7-8\, 2020 | 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.\nExhibition on view through February 7\, 2020\n \n\n\n\n\nThe Jane Hartsook Gallery is pleased to present Carly Slade’s first solo exhibition in New York City. Slade constructs buildings skewed by two-point perspective to tell universal stories about the way architecture communicates our hopes and lived experiences. In this exhibition\, Slade has created three buildings from her former neighborhood in Philadelphia. Driving by these buildings on her way to and from her studio\, she observed not only the buildings’ day-to-day changes\, but also the residue of their deeper history: new signs\, new paint jobs\, a once-beautiful lintel in disrepair. Each of these buildings embodies what Slade grew to love and admire about Philadelphia—a sense of hope\, dedication\, and a “make it work” mentality. \nSlade uses trade and craft skills to construct miniaturized buildings whose smaller scale invites us to think critically about how we communicate our identities through architecture and who we envision in certain spaces. Having worked in construction for ten years\, Slade is highly attuned to the craftsmanship of a building’s construction and is accustomed to the way many men in that field made clear that they didn’t think she belonged there. She is skeptical of the divide between craft skills and trade skills; she sees as much knowledge and skill in a well-positioned pipe as in any craftwork. Just as Slade questions the distinction between trade and craft skills\, she also questions the way spaces and skills are gendered. By combining skills that have been identified in the past as being exclusively “women’s” or “men’s” work\, like cross-stitch or electrical wiring\, to create her finished buildings\, Slade calls out a host of false dichotomies. \nCarly Slade is an artist based in Tempe\, AZ. She earned her MFA from San Jose State University and her BFA from Alberta College of Art and Design. Slade has been a resident artist at the Tyler School of Art (Philadelphia\, PA; 2017–2019)\, Lawrence Arts Center (Lawrence\, KS; 2016–2017)\, Archie Bray Foundation (Helena\, MT; 2016)\, Medalta (Medicine Hat\, Alberta\, Canada; 2012)\, and Watershed Center for the Arts (Newcastle\, ME; 2011). Slade has shown her work throughout the United States\, including at: Johnathan LeVine Projects (Jersey City\, NJ; 2018)\, The Clay Studio; (Philadelphia\, PA; 2018)\, Arch Enemy Gallery (Philadelphia\, PA; 2017)\, and the American Museum of Ceramic Art (Pomona\, CA; 2016). This will be her first exhibition in New York City. Slade is from Alberta\, Canada and is currently an instructor at Arizona State University in Tempe\, AZ. \nDownload the press release here.\n \nImages: © Alan Wiener\, courtesy of Greenwich House Pottery\, 2020.

SUMMARY:CreArtBox: Brandenburg
DESCRIPTION:For the second installment of the 2019 CreArt Music Series\, CreArtBox collaborates with the Arte String Quartet to present a program based around Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 5. \nIn 1721 Bach presented a total of 6 concertos to Christian Ludwig\, the Margrave of Brandenburg-Schwedt. In 2019\, CreArtBox will present the 5th in this series of works at the Renee Weiler Concert Hall at the Greenwich House School of Music\, with the musicianship of each artist on full display. \nAlongside the concerto\, CreArtBox will present works by Benjamin Britten\, Philip Lasser\, and Evan O. Adams. The evening will open with Britten’s String Quartet No. 2\, a mid-twentieth century piece that harkens to traditional forms while still exploring new territory typical of the period. The evening continues with an exploration of the twenty-first century through Lasser’s Ballade for flute & string quartet. Lasser elects to create and evolve an emotional landscape rather than focus on abstract compositional aspects of form; the piece is still presented in a quasi-concerto style\, relating it back to the tradition explored by Bach hundreds of years earlier. \nThe evening also will feature the premiere of a new commission by composer Evan O. Adams. His work Branden Bird Can Share Too exists as a companion piece to Bach’s 5th concerto\, deconstructing and reconstructing various aspects of the original work. In addition to CreArtBox\, O. Adams has also written works premiered by the JACK Quartet and Quince Ensemble. \nPROGRAM\nEvan O. Adams (1996 – ) \nBranden Bird Can Share Too – New commission\, world premiere [5’]\nBenjamin Britten (1913 – 1976) \nString quartet No. 2 [30’]\nPhilip Lasser (1963 – ) \nBallade for flute & string quartet [9’]\nJohann Sebastian Bach (1685 – 1750) \nBrandenburg Concerto No. 5 [25’]

SUMMARY:Sound It Out: Michael Formanek’s Very Practical Trio
DESCRIPTION:Bassist-composer Michael Formanek’s Very Practical Trio – featuring saxophonist Tim Berne and guitarist Mary Halvorson – returns to the Sound It Out series\, celebrating the Intakt release of Even Better\, the trio’s first album together. Mike\, a longtime Sound It Out favorite\, scored three consecutive five-star reviews in DownBeat for his previous albums on ECM\, and The New York Times has described his music as “graceful in its subversions\, even sumptuous.” \nJazzwise has praised Tim’s art as being “suffused with genuine humanity and more than a little wisdom\,” while the Wall Street Journal called Mary “one of the most exciting and original guitarists in jazz – or otherwise.” \nThe music of Even Better conveys Mike’s special sense of instrumental song. “It may not be what comes to mind for some people when you say the word ‘song\,’ but it’s a personal idea of song for me\,” he explains. “I conceived the compositions as cohesive\, song-like structures\, with a lyrical quality – not just head/solo/head in the usual jazz way. The pieces aren’t overly arranged\, but the improvisations do spin out of the material of the songs and then go back into it. I think this record really brings out the tuneful nature in everyone’s playing.” \nTickets are available at the door.
