Attendance is very limited. These limited edition works were all made by GHP staff and faculty during the pandemic. All proceeds go to keep your favorite local ceramic arts center (GHP) running and supporting our community of ceramic artists. \nGreenwich House Pottery is a nonprofit ceramics center that has been supporting artists and promoting the field of ceramics for over 110 years. Starting with clay modeling classes in the earliest days of Greenwich House as part of its Handicraft School\, the Pottery flourished with the help of the community and philanthropic support from patrons like Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. GHP remains a stalwart of innovation and art. \nWhen GHP moved online due to the COVID-19 pandemic\, our faculty and staff stepped up to the challenge\, some teaching online classes\, some making pots to sell to support Greenwich House\, and some doing both! \n

DESCRIPTION:FUN-damentals\nDidem Mert\nOnline Artist Talk & Opening | Friday\, October 16\, 2020 | 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.\nExhibition on view October 9 – November 6\, 2020 \nThe Jane Hartsook Gallery is pleased to present Didem Mert’s first solo exhibition in New York City. In this new body of work\, Mert emphasizes the “fun” of ceramics by playing with basic pottery skills to reimagine vessel forms in ways that express her personality. The distinctive surfaces Mert achieves are heavily influenced by her early exposure to woodworking. As the daughter of a woodworker\, Mert grew up paying special attention to surface texture and finish\, a focus that carries through in her careful mark-making and selection of terra sigillata and glazes. Even the bright pops of color in her work mirror the woodshop\, echoing the bright warning colors of heavy equipment\, though rather than danger these tones warn of impending FUN! \nDidem Mert is a San Francisco-based artist where she is also the Education Director of Clay by the Bay. Mert was born and raised in Cincinnati\, OH. She earned her MFA from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and her BFA from Northern Kentucky University. Mert has shown her work nationally\, including at: The Kiln Studio (Fairhope\, AL; 2019)\, Clay AKAR (Iowa City\, IA; 2018)\, The Clay Studio (Philadelphia\, PA; 2017)\, Companion Gallery (Humboldt\, TN; 2016)\, and Erie Art Museum (Erie\, PA; 2015)\, among others. \nDownload the press release here.\nGallery is open by appointment only. DESCRIPTION:Violin duo\, Miolina\, is performing to give thanks to Greenwich House Music School. \nPlease join us for a half-hour live-streaming concert from the Renee Weiler Concert Hall on November 12 at 7:00 pm. This concert is donation-based\, and free to all. Suggested donation of $20 can be made here at any time. \nFaculty members Mioi Takeda and Lynn Bechtold\, of the violin duo Miolina\, perform four works by Ms. Bechtold for violin duo and fixed media electronics: Away/Home\, Judy from Brooklyn\, No Kendo\, and Tears–a Lament\, based on a song by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. Miolina has been called “talented and dedicated” by Arts Birmingham\, and described as displaying “aggressive and virtuosic prowess” with “brilliance of sound\, technical mastery\, and stunning expressivity” by I CARE IF YOU LISTEN. \nCovid-19 has hit everyone hard\, in many ways\, but it has especially hit the arts and the faculty members of Greenwich House Music School. Concerts have been canceled\, live performances are a ghost of what they once were\, and many students have moved away\, or are afraid to begin learning a new instrument remotely. Many faculty had to file for unemployment for the very first time in their lives. “It’s a seriously fragile time for all of us\,” says Bechtold and Takeda. “We can’t continue\, however\, if we don’t have a place like GHMS\, that welcomes everyone and nurtures musicians of all ages.” \nLynn and Mioi welcome you to enjoy the concert\, and ask everyone in our Greenwich House community to support the music school if you can. Many faculty had to file for unemployment for the very first time in their lives. Brandee Younger\, Mioi Takeda\, Lynn Bechtold and Taka Kigawa will be playing to showcase the immense talent of the Music School’s faculty\, and as tribute to the challenges they and their peers have faced this year. Please join us in supporting our amazing faculty. \nTicket Sales Close on December 1st\, 5:00 p.m. \n\n  \n Harpist Brandee Younger is a classically-trained musician playing in the avant-garde tradition of her sonically forward predecessors Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane. As well versed in performance art as she is in the art of creative risk-taking\, Brandee Younger challenges commonly-held notions in her quest to make the harp a more relevant force in today’s music. \nMs. Younger’s ability to seamlessly inject the harp into arrangements and venues where it has been overlooked is a testament to her dedication to the instrument. She delivers a consistently fresh take on the timeless instrument as a performer and leader of the Brandee Younger Quartet.  Known for expressive interpretations of traditional harp repertoire as well as her continuing work with a diverse cross-section of musical talents\, Brandee is a creative linchpin whose nuanced presence and willingness to push boundaries makes her irreplaceable on record and in performance. \nShe has graced the stage with jazz leaders and popular hip-hop and r&b titans including Ravi Coltrane\, Pharoah Sanders\, Jack Dejohnette\, Reggie Workman\, Common\, Salaam Remi\, John Legend\, Maxwell and Lauryn Hill. Her fourth album Soul Awakening was released in June of 2019 and her original composition “Hortense” can be heard on the original Netflix Concert-Documentary by Beyoncé; Homecoming. \nCalled “talented and dedicated” by Arts Birmingham\, and described as displaying “aggressive and virtuosic prowess” with “brilliance of sound\, technical mastery\, and stunning expressivity” by I CARE IF YOU LISTEN\, violin duo Miolina has been attracting audiences since their inception in 2012. Mioi Takeda and Lynn Bechtold are creating and shaping the violin duo repertoire of the 21st century. Miolina specializes in violin duo music that employs the natural beauty and sound of the instruments\, with or without electronics and video. They enjoy collaborating on new compositions with composers\, as well as discovering hidden gems of the past. \nIn June 2017\, they were chosen to join New Music USA’s Impact Cohort. They are also recipients of 2019 grants from Adami Foundation\, and the American-Scandinavian Foundation; a 2018 grant from the Queens Council on the Arts; a 2017 Japan Foundation NY grant; 2016 and 2014 grants from New York Women Composers; and a 2015 grant from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. In 2017 and 2019\, they were chosen for artist residencies at Avaloch Farm Music Institute. Miolina is a 501(c)3 non-profit. Their self-titled debut album was released on Composers Concordance Records\, distributed by Naxos\, in 2018\, and they can be heard on 2020’s ‘Le Passager\,’ performing Jean-Baptiste Favory’s UNISONO V\, released on ACEL Records. All are available on iTunes and Amazon. \n  \nCritically acclaimed pianist Taka Kigawa has earned outstanding international recognition as a recitalist\, soloist\, and chamber music artist since winning First Prize in the prestigious 1990 Japan Music Foundation Piano Competition in Tokyo\, and the Diploma Prize at the 1998 Concurs Internacional Maria Canals De Barcelona in Spain. His repertoire is extremely large and varied\, ranging from the baroque to avant-garde compositions of today. His accolades include being heralded by The New York Times as a “phenomenon\,” and The New Yorker  as “an artist of stature.”  His New York City recital in 2010 was chosen as one of the best concerts of the year by The New York Times. His New York City recital in August 2011 was picked as one of the most notable concerts in the 2011-2012 season by Musical America. Also his Buenos Aires recital in April 2014 was chosen as one of the best concerts of the year by Argentina’s leading paper\, La Nación. \nHe has performed extensively as a recitalist and soloist in New York\, Washington DC\, Boston\, Cleveland\, Paris\, Milan and Barcelona\, with appearances in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall\, Alice Tully Hall\, Kosciuszko Foundation\, Severance Hall in Cleveland\, Cité de la Musique\, and Salle Gaveau in Paris\, Plau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona\, and Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. He frequently tours in his native Japan\, appearing in Tokyo\, Osaka\, Nagano and Kyoto\, both as a recitalist and a soloist with orchestra and in chamber music groups. He has performed with such distinguished institution as The Cleveland Orchestra. He has been a featured artist on many television and radio networks throughout the U.S.\, Europe and Asia. He has collaborated closely with such renowned musicians as Pierre Boulez\, Myung-Whun Chung and Jonathan Nott. Also he premiered the last solo piano piece of Yusef Lateef\, the jazz legend\, in New York City in 2013. Taka Kigawa is a Steinway Artist. \n

Image: © Alan Wiener\, courtesy Greenwich House Pottery 2021 \nAfter Image\nKate Roberts\nOnline Artist Talk & Opening Reception | Friday\, January 15\, 2021 | 5:00 p.m.\nExhibition on view through January 8 through February 5\, 2021 \nThe Jane Hartsook Gallery is pleased to present Kate Robert’s first solo exhibition in New York City. In her art practice\, Roberts uses the decay of specific objects\, architecture\, or relationships to meditate on the passage of time. In this new body of work\, she widens her lens\, considering the massive destruction caused by forest fires that blazed across Oregon and much of the West Coast in 2020\, the effects of which rippled out as far as the East Coast and Europe. Using clay dust to “paint” on transparent fabric\, Roberts recreates the smoked-out landscapes left behind by the raging fires. Through skillful\, time-consuming work\, Roberts crafts the results of swift devastation wrought by the decay of environmental stewardship. \nKate Roberts is from Greenville\, South Carolina. She earned her MFA and BFA from Alfred University in ceramics\, with minors in art education and art history. Roberts’s work has been shown nationally in museums such as the Tampa Museum of Art (Florida; 2011) and the Everson Museum of Art (Syracuse\, NY; 2006)\, and in major exhibitions such as Scripps College 69th Ceramic Annual (Claremont\, CA; 2013) and Ceramic Top 40\, shown at Red Star Studio (Kansas City\, MO; 2013) and Ceramics Program\, Office of the Arts at Harvard (Allston\, MA; 2014). She has held residencies nationally and internationally\, including at Project Art (Cummington\, MA; 2012)\, Anderson Ranch Arts Center (Snowmass\, CO; 2011)\, and Cité Internationale des Arts (Paris\, France; 2011). This live stream was made possible with funds from Continuum Culture & Arts and the Brooklyn Art Council. We would also like to thank the following people for their efforts to produce the video: Lee Odom\, Andrew Drury\, Andrew Jordan\, JD Parran\, and of course\, our composer\, Joe Daley. \nAfter 50 years of working with some of the most remarkable artists in the adventurous music scene\, Joseph Daley has emerged as one of jazz and contemporary music’s most exciting leaders and composers. His albums The Seven Deadly Sins and The Seven Heavenly Virtues earned rave reviews and secured a spot on several Best of the Year lists thanks to his innovative contemporary take on the tradition of Charles Mingus\, Duke Ellington\, and George Russell.

SUMMARY:Trevor King Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Trevor King will give a talk about the project he worked on during his fellowship at Greenwich House Pottery. \nTrevor King is a multimedia artist who lives and works in Queens\, New York. King primarily works in sculpture\, preferring materials like clay and plaster that convey a sense of tactility and material memory. He is interested in the endurance of the human spirit and memory\, and uses the methods of a documentarian to inform his work in sculpture. He often employs digital media in this exploration\, sometimes including interviews and personal archives in his work. \nKing has an MFA from the Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan and a BFA from Slippery Rock University. He has also studied in the Sculpture and Intermedia Departments at the University of Poznan\, Poland. He has shown his work at David Klein Gallery (Detroit\, MI; 2019)\, Emmanuel Barbault Gallery (New York\, NY; 2018)\, Craft and Folk Art Museum (Los Angeles\, CA; 2018)\, among others. He has held a number of residencies\, including at Mass MoCA (2021\, upcoming)\, Bronx Museum of the Arts (2018)\, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts (2015)\, and Ox-Bow School of Art (2014). \nDuring his fellowship\, King created an impressionistic documentary video that tells the story of how Greenwich House Pottery and its community are maintaining the ceramic arts tradition\, and pushing it forward. He shot video footage of daily life at the studio and interviewed staff\, students\, and other affiliated artists\, combining these two types of documentation to create a romantic video portrait that demonstrates the beauty of the Pottery and its community. \n\nThis event is free and open to the public.\nRegister here.

In her art practice\, Wu brings a fresh eye to daily life\, sculpting in a whimsical style that is influenced by her work in animation and computer art. In this body of work\, she brings an array of “bike people” together from around the world. Originally inspired by the goose farmer\, ice cream man\, and maltose vendor of her childhood—all of whom got around by bicycle—Wu has included bike people and stories from India to the United States in this show. \nTaili Wu was born in Taichung\, Taiwan and is currently based out of New York. She earned her MFA from the School of Visual Arts in computer art and her BFA from Taipei Municipal University of Education in art education and education. She works in ceramics\, stop-motion animation\, and mixed media. Wu’s short films have been shown at Slamdance Film Festival (CA; 2010) and the International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film (Germany; 2009)\, among others. Her ceramic work has been shown at Creators Space (St. Paul\, MN; 2019); EarthworksNYC (New York\, NY; 2019) and Kolva-Sullivan Gallery (Spokane\, WA; 2018)\, among others.
