SUMMARY:Miolina: A Benefit for GHMS
DESCRIPTION:Violin duo\, Miolina\, is performing to give thanks to Greenwich House Music School. \nPlease join us for a half-hour live-streaming concert from the Renee Weiler Concert Hall on November 12 at 7:00 pm. This concert is donation-based\, and free to all. Suggested donation of $20 can be made here at any time. \nFaculty members Mioi Takeda and Lynn Bechtold\, of the violin duo Miolina\, perform four works by Ms. Bechtold for violin duo and fixed media electronics: Away/Home\, Judy from Brooklyn\, No Kendo\, and Tears–a Lament\, based on a song by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. Miolina has been called “talented and dedicated” by Arts Birmingham\, and described as displaying “aggressive and virtuosic prowess” with “brilliance of sound\, technical mastery\, and stunning expressivity” by I CARE IF YOU LISTEN. \nCovid-19 has hit everyone hard\, in many ways\, but it has especially hit the arts and the faculty members of Greenwich House Music School. Concerts have been canceled\, live performances are a ghost of what they once were\, and many students have moved away\, or are afraid to begin learning a new instrument remotely. Many faculty had to file for unemployment for the very first time in their lives. “It’s a seriously fragile time for all of us\,” says Bechtold and Takeda. “We can’t continue\, however\, if we don’t have a place like GHMS\, that welcomes everyone and nurtures musicians of all ages.” \nLynn and Mioi welcome you to enjoy the concert\, and ask everyone in our Greenwich House community to support the music school if you can. The concert will be live-streaming here.

SUMMARY:Play It Forward
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, December 1\, 2020\n6:30 – 7:05 p.m.\nAn evening of music to support the Greenwich House Music School Scholarship Fund\nfeaturing faculty performances by \nBrandee Younger\nMiolina\nTaka Kigawa\nPerformers also include GHMS Scholarship students Jeffrey Sussman\, Naya Melvani and Nikita Melvani! \nEnjoy the live-streamed concert from the comfort of your home with a Little Owl gift basket and fine wine from the private collection of board member Mark Rudd delivered right to your door. \nThis year\, Play It Forward will be a tribute to the Greenwich House Music School faculty. Covid-19 has hit everyone hard\, in many ways\, but it has especially hit the arts and the faculty members of GHMS. Concerts have been canceled\, live performances are a ghost of what they once were\, and many students have moved away\, or are afraid to begin learning a new instrument remotely. Many faculty had to file for unemployment for the very first time in their lives. Brandee Younger\, Mioi Takeda\, Lynn Bechtold and Taka Kigawa will be playing to showcase the immense talent of the Music School’s faculty\, and as tribute to the challenges they and their peers have faced this year. Please join us in supporting our amazing faculty. \nTicket Sales Close on December 1st\, 5:00 p.m. \n\n  \n Harpist Brandee Younger is a classically-trained musician playing in the avant-garde tradition of her sonically forward predecessors Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane. As well versed in performance art as she is in the art of creative risk-taking\, Brandee Younger challenges commonly-held notions in her quest to make the harp a more relevant force in today’s music. \nMs. Younger’s ability to seamlessly inject the harp into arrangements and venues where it has been overlooked is a testament to her dedication to the instrument. She delivers a consistently fresh take on the timeless instrument as a performer and leader of the Brandee Younger Quartet.  Known for expressive interpretations of traditional harp repertoire as well as her continuing work with a diverse cross-section of musical talents\, Brandee is a creative linchpin whose nuanced presence and willingness to push boundaries makes her irreplaceable on record and in performance. \nShe has graced the stage with jazz leaders and popular hip-hop and r&b titans including Ravi Coltrane\, Pharoah Sanders\, Jack Dejohnette\, Reggie Workman\, Common\, Salaam Remi\, John Legend\, Maxwell and Lauryn Hill. Her fourth album Soul Awakening was released in June of 2019 and her original composition “Hortense” can be heard on the original Netflix Concert-Documentary by Beyoncé; Homecoming. \nCalled “talented and dedicated” by Arts Birmingham\, and described as displaying “aggressive and virtuosic prowess” with “brilliance of sound\, technical mastery\, and stunning expressivity” by I CARE IF YOU LISTEN\, violin duo Miolina has been attracting audiences since their inception in 2012. Mioi Takeda and Lynn Bechtold are creating and shaping the violin duo repertoire of the 21st century. Miolina specializes in violin duo music that employs the natural beauty and sound of the instruments\, with or without electronics and video. They enjoy collaborating on new compositions with composers\, as well as discovering hidden gems of the past. \nIn June 2017\, they were chosen to join New Music USA’s Impact Cohort. They are also recipients of 2019 grants from Adami Foundation\, and the American-Scandinavian Foundation; a 2018 grant from the Queens Council on the Arts; a 2017 Japan Foundation NY grant; 2016 and 2014 grants from New York Women Composers; and a 2015 grant from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. In 2017 and 2019\, they were chosen for artist residencies at Avaloch Farm Music Institute. Miolina is a 501(c)3 non-profit. Their self-titled debut album was released on Composers Concordance Records\, distributed by Naxos\, in 2018\, and they can be heard on 2020’s ‘Le Passager\,’ performing Jean-Baptiste Favory’s UNISONO V\, released on ACEL Records. All are available on iTunes and Amazon. \n  \nCritically acclaimed pianist Taka Kigawa has earned outstanding international recognition as a recitalist\, soloist\, and chamber music artist since winning First Prize in the prestigious 1990 Japan Music Foundation Piano Competition in Tokyo\, and the Diploma Prize at the 1998 Concurs Internacional Maria Canals De Barcelona in Spain. His repertoire is extremely large and varied\, ranging from the baroque to avant-garde compositions of today. His accolades include being heralded by The New York Times as a “phenomenon\,” and The New Yorker  as “an artist of stature.”  His New York City recital in 2010 was chosen as one of the best concerts of the year by The New York Times. His New York City recital in August 2011 was picked as one of the most notable concerts in the 2011-2012 season by Musical America. Also his Buenos Aires recital in April 2014 was chosen as one of the best concerts of the year by Argentina’s leading paper\, La Nación. \nHe has performed extensively as a recitalist and soloist in New York\, Washington DC\, Boston\, Cleveland\, Paris\, Milan and Barcelona\, with appearances in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall\, Alice Tully Hall\, Kosciuszko Foundation\, Severance Hall in Cleveland\, Cité de la Musique\, and Salle Gaveau in Paris\, Plau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona\, and Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. He frequently tours in his native Japan\, appearing in Tokyo\, Osaka\, Nagano and Kyoto\, both as a recitalist and a soloist with orchestra and in chamber music groups. He has performed with such distinguished institution as The Cleveland Orchestra. He has been a featured artist on many television and radio networks throughout the U.S.\, Europe and Asia. He has collaborated closely with such renowned musicians as Pierre Boulez\, Myung-Whun Chung and Jonathan Nott. SUMMARY:After Image\, Kate Roberts
DESCRIPTION:Kate Roberts\, After Image (install). Image: © Alan Wiener\, courtesy Greenwich House Pottery 2021 \nAfter Image\nKate Roberts\nOnline Artist Talk & Opening Reception | Friday\, January 15\, 2021 | 5:00 p.m.\nExhibition on view through January 8 through February 5\, 2021 \nThe Jane Hartsook Gallery is pleased to present Kate Robert’s first solo exhibition in New York City. In her art practice\, Roberts uses the decay of specific objects\, architecture\, or relationships to meditate on the passage of time. In this new body of work\, she widens her lens\, considering the massive destruction caused by forest fires that blazed across Oregon and much of the West Coast in 2020\, the effects of which rippled out as far as the East Coast and Europe. Using clay dust to “paint” on transparent fabric\, Roberts recreates the smoked-out landscapes left behind by the raging fires. Through skillful\, time-consuming work\, Roberts crafts the results of swift devastation wrought by the decay of environmental stewardship. \nKate Roberts is from Greenville\, South Carolina. She earned her MFA and BFA from Alfred University in ceramics\, with minors in art education and art history. Roberts’s work has been shown nationally in museums such as the Tampa Museum of Art (Florida; 2011) and the Everson Museum of Art (Syracuse\, NY; 2006)\, and in major exhibitions such as Scripps College 69th Ceramic Annual (Claremont\, CA; 2013) and Ceramic Top 40\, shown at Red Star Studio (Kansas City\, MO; 2013) and Ceramics Program\, Office of the Arts at Harvard (Allston\, MA; 2014). She has held residencies nationally and internationally\, including at Project Art (Cummington\, MA; 2012)\, Anderson Ranch Arts Center (Snowmass\, CO; 2011)\, and Cité Internationale des Arts (Paris\, France; 2011). Roberts has also taught extensively\, including at University of Wisconsin–Madison and the University of Washington in Seattle.  Currently\, she is Assistant Professor at the University of Memphis in Tennessee. \n \nImages: © Alan Wiener\, courtesy of Greenwich House Pottery\, 2021

SUMMARY:Trevor King Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Trevor King will give a talk about the project he worked on during his fellowship at Greenwich House Pottery. \nTrevor King is a multimedia artist who lives and works in Queens\, New York. King primarily works in sculpture\, preferring materials like clay and plaster that convey a sense of tactility and material memory. He is interested in the endurance of the human spirit and memory\, and uses the methods of a documentarian to inform his work in sculpture. He often employs digital media in this exploration\, sometimes including interviews and personal archives in his work. \nKing has an MFA from the Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan and a BFA from Slippery Rock University. He has also studied in the Sculpture and Intermedia Departments at the University of Poznan\, Poland. He has shown his work at David Klein Gallery (Detroit\, MI; 2019)\, Emmanuel Barbault Gallery (New York\, NY; 2018)\, Craft and Folk Art Museum (Los Angeles\, CA; 2018)\, among others. He has held a number of residencies\, including at Mass MoCA (2021\, upcoming)\, Bronx Museum of the Arts (2018)\, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts (2015)\, and Ox-Bow School of Art (2014). \nDuring his fellowship\, King created an impressionistic documentary video that tells the story of how Greenwich House Pottery and its community are maintaining the ceramic arts tradition\, and pushing it forward. He shot video footage of daily life at the studio and interviewed staff\, students\, and other affiliated artists\, combining these two types of documentation to create a romantic video portrait that demonstrates the beauty of the Pottery and its community. \n\nThis event is free and open to the public.\nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Where is the Bike Shop?\, Taili Wu
DESCRIPTION:Where is the Bike Shop?\nTaili Wu\nOnline Opening and Artist Talk | Friday\, February 26\, 2021 | 5:00 p.m.\nExhibition on view February 19 through March 19\, 2021 \n  \nThe Jane Hartsook Gallery is pleased to present Taili Wu’s New York City solo-show debut\, Where is the Bike Shop? In her art practice\, Wu brings a fresh eye to daily life\, sculpting in a whimsical style that is influenced by her work in animation and computer art. In this body of work\, she brings an array of “bike people” together from around the world. Originally inspired by the goose farmer\, ice cream man\, and maltose vendor of her childhood—all of whom got around by bicycle—Wu has included bike people and stories from India to the United States in this show. \nTaili Wu was born in Taichung\, Taiwan and is currently based out of New York. She earned her MFA from the School of Visual Arts in computer art and her BFA from Taipei Municipal University of Education in art education and education. She works in ceramics\, stop-motion animation\, and mixed media. Wu’s short films have been shown at Slamdance Film Festival (CA; 2010) and the International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film (Germany; 2009)\, among others. Her ceramic work has been shown at Creators Space (St. Paul\, MN; 2019); EarthworksNYC (New York\, NY; 2019) and Kolva-Sullivan Gallery (Spokane\, WA; 2018)\, among others. Wu was an artist in residence at Archie Bray Foundation (Helena\, MT) in 2018. \n \nImages: © Alan Wiener\, courtesy of Greenwich House Pottery\, 2021

SUMMARY:Heidi Lau Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Heidi Lau will give a talk about the project she worked on during her fellowship at Greenwich House Pottery. \nLau is a New York City-based artist who grew up in Macau. Her primary materials are paper and ceramic. In her research-based work\, Lau explores nostalgia\, memory\, and the creation of history. Taoist cosmology influences much of her work\, as do folk superstitions and Macau’s colonial history. Lau is particularly interested in burial chambers as a transitional space in which a body teeters between personhood and objecthood. \nLau has a BFA from New York University. Her work has been shown internationally\, including at the Venice Biennale (Italy; 2019)\, the Bronx Museum of the Arts (NY; 2017)\, Macao Museum of Art (China; 2014)\, and Museum of Chinese in America (New York\, NY; 2016). Lau has received a number of awards\, including the Colene Brown Art Prize (2019)\, the Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters & Sculptors Grant (2015) and the Socrates Sculpture Park Emerging Artist Fellowship (2014). She has held residencies\, including at CSULB Center for Contemporary Ceramics (2020)\, the Joan Mitchell Center (2018)\, the Museum of Arts and Design (2017)\, and the Center for Book Arts (2014)\, among others. \nDuring her fellowship\, Lau created a multi-part vessel for the W.O.W Project and a series of large-scale sculptural fountains inspired by the mausoleum of Emperor Qin Shi Huang (259 – 210 B.C.) in Xian\, China. Though the mausoleum is most famously known for the terracotta warriors surrounding it\, Lau took inspiration for her project from the pools of mercury that historical accounts and archeological research indicate surround the main section of the as-yet unopened tomb. \n\nThis event is free and open to the public.\nRegister here. \n\n

SUMMARY:Uncharted: Migguel Anggelo
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Pavel Korbut \nMigguel Anggelo \nA First Look at English With an Accent \nStreaming on Joe’s Pub Live! \nMay 13th\, 8:00 p.m. \n \nMigguel Anggelo and his longtime Musical Director and collaborator Jaime Lozano will premiere an online glimpse into the development of their ambitious new project\, English with an Accent (EWaA). EWaA will ultimately take the tripartite form of a dance-theater live performance\, a series of short online films and a musical album\, but for this early and intimate show-and-tell\, the artists will publicly premiere a fully-produced video presentation of the work\, including several first drafts of the films and a number of final drafts of songs that were created during Anggelo’s recent residency as a New York Presenters Consortium artist. The performance features Joel Mateo on drums and percussion. \nThe story of EWaA centers around a newly emigrated caterpillar in New York City\, unsure of which direction his life is taking. Is he really a caterpillar\, or just a lowly worm? Will he become the butterfly of his dreams? And what does it mean to become a butterfly in the first place? This work explores the promise of the American Dream through themes of freedom\, safety and self-worth. Anggelo and Lozano will provide an insightful and engaging evening of the work in progress with a look under the hood at the music\, visuals and artistic ingenuity devoted to building English with an Accent thus far. \nMigguel Anggelo: A First Look at English with an Accent features three first-cut videos from the artist’s forthcoming series of short films. \n• Directed and Choreographed by Sarah O’Gleby\n• Conceived band performed by Migguel Anggelo\n• Executive Creative Producer and Production Design by David Stark\n• Music and Lyrics by Migguel Anggelo\n• Musical Supervision\, Arrangements and Music Production by Jaime Lozano\n• Dancers: Akina Kitazawa\, Cajai Fellows Johnson\, Jōvan Dansberry\, Marc Heitzman\, Ricardo Zayas\, Robin Masella\n• Director of Photography: Louis Zieja\n• Edited by Cory Bruce\n• Costumes Designed by Ryan Park\n• Hair Designed by Lindsay Block\n• Makeup Designed by Rafael German\n• Sound Design by Nectar Sound Drops:\n– Supervising Sound Editor and Mix: Gerardo Villarreal\n– Sound Designer: Erik Trujillo\n– Sound Editor: Martin Cabrera\n• Musicians:\n– Bass: Demián Cantú\n– Drums: Javier Garagarza\n– Guitars: Pavel Cal\n– Percussion: Dayron Cartas\n– Piano and Programming: Jaime Lozano\n– Backup Vocals: Roke MD\n• Music Mixed by Demián Cantú at La Casita Recording Studio \n\nMigguel Anggelo is a Venezuelan-born and Brooklyn-based multidisciplinary artist. His work explores the intersections of queer\, Latino and immigration identities\, as well as the role of the artist in contemporary society.  Anggelo is a 2020/2021 Resident Artist of the NY Presenters Consortium and was previously a Joe’s Pub Working Group resident in 2019.  As a musician\, Migguel Anggelo has released two albums (Dónde Estara Matisse and La Casa Azul); as a theater artist\, has been awarded residencies to develop new works at MASS MoCA\, the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia\, PA and BRIC in Brooklyn\, NY. He has also personally developed and toured LatinXoxo (2018-2019)\, a piece which peels back onion layers of personas\, “Latin lover” clichés and reckons with the tragic death of his homophobic father. SUMMARY:Uncharted: Shaina Taub
DESCRIPTION:Shaina Taub \nSongs of the Great Hill \nStreaming on Joe’s Pub Live! \nMay 20th\, 8:00 p.m. \n \nShaina Taub — the fast-rising musical theater creator and performer\, most recently of the forthcoming Suffragist at The Public Theater and The Devil Wears Prada with composer Sir Elton John on Broadway – will debut Songs of the Great Hill\, a fully-produced\, streaming concert premiere of new music created during quarantine by Taub (vocals\, piano\, accordion) and presented with her friends and bandmates Mike Brun (bass/guitar)\, Hiroyuki Matsuura (drums)\, David Farrell Melton (keyboards/organ)\, and Kuhoo Verma and Sylver Wallace (backing vocals). \nAs summer turned to fall in quarantine\, Taub took solace in a daily walk on the Great Hill in Central Park\, trying to face the unrelenting surreality of the year — “This other great hill we’ve all been trudging up.” The view from that higher ground inspired Taub to sit down at the piano every day. “I just wanted to see what came out: all the messy grief\, uncertainty\, hard-won joy\, some stories I’ve been meaning to tell for years\, others that appeared completely by surprise.” \n“I’ve been in a lengthy creative stretch of making musical theater\, which is necessarily focused on character and structure\,” says Taub. “So these are the first songs I’ve written in a long time that were sparked from the impulse of music rather than words.” \nThere will be a virtual tip jar to accompany this performance\, with all proceeds going to the Alliance for Quality Education. \n\nShaina Taub is an Emmy-nominated songwriter and performer. A winner of the Kleban Prize\, the Fred Ebb Award and the Jonathan Larson Grant\, Taub is an artist-in-residence at the Public Theater\, where she has a regular concert residency at Joe’s Pub. She’s currently writing lyrics for the upcoming Broadway musical The Devil Wears Prada\, with music by Sir Elton John\, as well as Suffragist\, a new musical about American women’s fight for the vote. She created and starred in critically acclaimed musical adaptations of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night and As You Like It that were commissioned and produced by the Public Theater at the Delacorte in Central Park as part of their groundbreaking community-based program\, Public Works. Those adaptations have now been produced in London\, Seattle\, Dallas and beyond. She has released two solo albums and recently signed with Atlantic Records. \nTaub starred in the New York re-mounting of the Signature Theatre’s hit production of Bill Irwin and David Shiner’s Old Hats\, featuring her original songs. She appeared in the original Off-Broadway productions of Natasha\, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 and Hadestown\, and has performed her music in concert at Lincoln Center’s American Songbook series and with the New York Pops at Carnegie Hall. Taub writes songs for Sesame Street\, is an NYCLU Artist Ambassador and a member of the Resistance Revival Chorus.

SUMMARY:Teapot: The Allan Buitekant Collection
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nTeapot: The Allan Buitekant Collection\nOpening Reception | Friday\, May 21\, 2021 | 5:00 – 6:00 p.m.\nExhibition on view through June 18\, 2021 \nThe Jane Hartsook Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of teapots from the late Allan Buitekant’s collection. Buitekant was a long-time supporter of Greenwich House Pottery\, setting up the Allan Buitekant Fund for Ceramic Art and Inquiry to support GHP’s Residency and Fellowship Program. This collection of handmade teapots represents Buitekant’s years of collecting and his interest in Yixing teapots. Made out of clay from deposits around Lake Tai in China since the 16th century\, Yixing teapots are prized for their fine craftsmanship and for the way their clay enhances the flavor of brewed tea. Most collectors brew only a single type of tea in each pot to fully take advantage of this benefit. Buitekant passed away in July 2012\, survived by his life partner Joyce Cunningham who has donated this collection in his honor to continue his passion for supporting emerging ceramic artists. \n  \nAllan Buitekant was born in the Bronx\, New York City in 1933. He was one of a small group of art directors and writers at the Doyle Dane Bernbach agency in New York City who revolutionized advertising in the 1960s and 1970s. In addition to his work in advertising\, Buitekant was also a potter and a collector. He studied ceramics in the evenings at Parson’s School of Design\, at the 92nd St. Y with Byron Temple\, at Greenwich House Pottery with Jim Crumrine\, and at the Brooklyn Museum with Jolyn Hofstead. After his illustrious career as an advertising art director in New York City\, he retired to North Carolina to pursue his interest in ceramics. Buitekant was also avidly interested in the bonsai tradition\, and was a student of the great bonsai master\, Yuji Yoshimura. His collection of bonsai currently resides at The New York Botanical Garden. \n  \nAll pieces are available for sale to benefit Greenwich House Pottery.\nBrowse this collection through our online store here. \n  \nImages: © Alan Wiener\, courtesy of Greenwich House Pottery\, 2021
