The talk is in conjunction with her solo exhibition\, Deliberate Pace\, on view in the Jane Hartsook Gallery. To read more about the exhibition\, click here. \nRachel Eng is a Pennsylvania-based artist working in clay\, video projection\, and sound. She earned her MFA from University of Colorado Boulder and her BFA from Pennsylvania State University. Eng has shown her work at The Clay Studio (Philadelphia\, PA; 2020)\, Flecker Gallery (Long Island\, NY; 2020)\, and Sykes Gallery (Gettysburg\, PA; 2019). She has held residencies at Studio Kura (Itoshima\, Japan) and Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts (Newcastle\, ME)\, among others. Eng was selected as a NCECA Emerging Artist in 2017. She is currently Assistant Professor of Art and Art History at Dickinson College.

DESCRIPTION:That’s My Buzzer: A Comedy Gameshow \nComedy for 18+ by Comics 50+ \nIn 2020\, comedian Jo Firestone started teaching a weekly stand-up comedy class at Greenwich House Older Adult Center. When the pandemic hit\, they continued to meet online to riff\, joke\, and work out their bits. This motley crew was featured on Peacock in a docu-comedy special “Good Timing\,” and was nominated for a Critics Choice Award. We are excited to welcome this class to the stage of our very own Greenwich House Theater for a one time only comedy event!  Jo Firestone hosts That’s My Buzzer: A Comedy Gameshow featuring the hilarious members of Greenwich House Older Adult Centers with some New York City’s finest comedians.  \n \nJo Firestone is a comedian\, actor\, and writer whose work can be seen on Joe Pera Talks With You\, Ziwe\, Teenage Euthanasia\, The First Lady\, Shrill\, and more. She co-hosts the podcast “Dr. Gameshow” with Manolo Moreno on the Maximum Fun network. Her album “The Hits” is available on Comedy Central Records. She has created 3 specials\, “Good Timing with Jo Firestone” on Peacock\, “Rate The Cookie” on Adult Swim\, and a half hour for Comedy Central. DESCRIPTION:Get the most out of your GHP glazes! Sometimes you work so hard on your piece just to end up with a glazing disaster. Those days will be in the past\, when you take this one-day glaze workshop taught by Haakon Lenzi. \nInstruction will focus on glaze application for cone 10. How to apply multiple glazes to the same pot: dipping\, brushing\, wax and or latex resist. You will also learn how to make the most of washes\, including how to make your own wash from mason stains. This workshop is only for GHP students registered within the 2022-23 school year with a focus on our GHP glazes and kilns. \nNotes\n\nSunday June 5\nClass meets 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. with a one hour break\nStudents have studio access from 9:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m. \n\n\n\nClass Requirements\n\n\n\nMust be a GHP student enrolled within the 2021-22 school year.

SUMMARY:Pottery Memorial for Peter Gourfain
DESCRIPTION:Images courtesy of Nancy Sacks \nOn Sunday\, May 12\, long-time GHP faculty member Peter Gourfain passed away. For years\, Peter arrived on Thursday afternoons and headed up to the third floor to join the community and share his love of art and making. On the final Thursday of the term\, June 23\, GHP will honor his memory with a slideshow memorial in the Jane Hartsook Gallery. The gallery will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.\, as a space for reflection. Photo credit: Alan Wiener. \nCeramics Now\nKelly Chang\, Ray Farmer\,\nMeiasha Gray\, Heidi Lau \nJuly 8 – Aug 19\, 2022\nReception: July 21\, 2022 | 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. \nThe Jane Hartsook Gallery is pleased to present work by our 2021 fellows and artists in residence: Kelly Chang\, Rachel Farmer\, Meiasha Gray\, and Heidi Lau. Our Residency and Fellowship program fosters artistic growth by providing makers with a creative community\, time\, space and materials to explore and generate new bodies of work in ceramics in vibrant New York City. \n  \nKelly Chang is a New York City-based art director\, animator\, and designer\, who is developing his art practice in clay. Using his background in computer graphics and 3D modeling and animation\, Chang employs 3D printing and scanning\, photography\, and computer simulation to create his slipcast ceramic sculptures. During his residency\, Chang continued to develop a project that considers the replica and its value\, or lack thereof. In this series\, he reimagines the trash\, plastic\, and electronics of our current era as valuable artifacts found in the distant future. \n  \nRay Farmer is an artist who uses ceramics and quilts to re-examine histories that get passed down through families\, institutions\, and pop culture—such as the mythology of the American West\, and the artist’s own Mormon pioneer ancestry—with a queer\, feminist bent. During their fellowship\, Farmer developed a body of work that featured miniature sculptures of pioneer women in action in diorama-like scenes that question the dominant narratives of the American West. \n  \nMeiasha Gray is a New York City-based artist who works in ceramics and performance art. In her work\, Gray is interested in the ephemeral—one of the reasons she is drawn to clay as a material given its ability to preserve momentary gestures—and in the domestication of space. During her fellowship\, Gray furthered a body of work that integrates other media\, including photographs\, into her clay practice. She investigated the relationship between people and objects and made several life-sized sculptures based on her memories and family photographs. \n  \nHeidi Lau is a New York City-based artist who grew up in Macau. Lau works in paper and ceramic to do research-based work that explores nostalgia\, memory\, and the creation of history. Taoist cosmology influences much of Lau’s work\, as do folk superstitions and Macau’s colonial past. Lau is particularly interested in burial chambers as a transitional space in which a body teeters between personhood and objecthood. She created the DIY series in April 2020\, in response to the Covid-19 pandemic as a way to support her artistic community. And now\, for the first time ever\, she is hosting her show with a live\, in-person audience at The Greenwich House Music School where she’ll be joined by independent producer and curator\, Monique Martin\, and leading modern dancer and Tony-nominated artist\, Karine Plantadit. \n  \nDanni Gee has over 35 years of experience in the Arts and Entertainment industry. She has performed as a principal dancer with PHILADANCO! The Philadelphia Dance Company\, and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater\, and as a vocalist\, she has performed with artists such as Kathy Sledge\, of Sister Sledge\, Gloria Gaynor\, and Cher\, as well with her own indie rock band\, Suga Bush. Danni returned to dance in 2006 when she accepted the position of Dance Curator for City Parks Foundation SummerStage\, New York’s largest\, free outdoor festival. Over the years\, she has engaged and commissioned such established companies as Parsons Dance\, Dance Brazil\, Kibbutz Contemporary Company\, Ballet Hispanico\, Martha Graham Dance Company\, Complexions Contemporary Ballet\, Camille A. Brown & Dancers\, A.I.M by Kyle Abraham\, Alonzo King LINES Ballet\, and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Along with providing performance opportunities for many emerging choreographers and companies\, she has also successfully presented several special theatrical evenings including Notes of a Native Song featuring Stew and the Negro Problem; the 45th Anniversary Celebration of the hit Broadway show\, The Wiz; a concert version of Fela! The Musical; and the 20th anniversary of HBO’s Def Poetry Jam. This year\, Danni will be celebrating her 15th season with SummerStage by presenting a roster that highlights BIPOC women leaders in dance. \nKarine Plantadit is a dancer and performer. She was born in France and raised in Cameroon. She moved to Cannes at age 14 to study dance. She subsequently moved to New York City to study dance at the school of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater\, after seeing them perform in Paris\, eventually joining the premiere company and becoming one of its most celebrated dancers. \nSince leaving Ailey\, Karine has found much success in theater and film. She was part of the original cast of The Lion King\, lit the great white way on fire with her star turn in Twyla Tharp’s  Movin’ Out\, and was nominated for a Tony Award in the category of Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of the role “Kate” in the musical Come Fly Away. Along with her many Broadway credits\, including featured roles in the musicals Saturday Night Fever and After Midnight\, she has appeared in numerous tv shows and films\, namely So You Think You Can Dance\, Sex and the City\, and alongside Salma Hayek on the big screen in Frida. \nShe is currently a senior judge and instructor for the renowned Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) dance organization and an internationally certified yoga instructor and life coach\, regularly making guest speaking appearances and instructing at some of the most prominent and prestigious dance schools and yoga studios around the world. And with her 20-plus years of experience in the Broadway and dance community as an artist\, and because she knows the demands of this level of performance\, she recently created the Conscious Comeback Program to meet the needs of the community in this unique time and use her connection with yoga\, meditation\, and healing practices to help artists\, including the cast of Hamilton and the dancers of Alvin Ailey\, enhance their performance and reach their highest potential in their long-awaited return to the stage. \nAs a propagator of art\, culture and ideas\, Monique Martin brings her passion and experience in community building through the arts to elevate and instigate. An independent creative producer\, artist\, curator\, and marketing consultant\, she has partnered with and produced for Joe’s Pub\, Disney Theatricals\, The Apollo Theater\, The New Victory Theater\, Southbank Centre/UK\, The MET Museum\, Park Avenue Armory\, NJPAC\, Queens Theater in the Park\, and HBO. \nAs Programming Director for the River2River Festival\, SummerStage and Harlem Stage\, she expanded the curatorial breadth by including contemporary circus\, and international artists. DESCRIPTION:Join pianist\, accordionist\, and composer Sam Reider for an intimate solo performance and the NYC release celebration for his new record Petrichor on Friday\, July 22. \nTickets are $15. \nDoors: 7:30 p.m. \nConcert: 8:00 p.m. \n \nSlow & Steady Records announces the release of pianist-composer Sam Reider’s first solo piano recording Petrichor. The eight original compositions form a musical reflection on Reider’s recent homecoming to San Francisco after ten years in New York. “Hiking the foggy coastline\, climbing through redwood forests up to alpine lakes\, I felt rejuvenated to be back home\, in touch with a part of myself that had laid dormant\,” says Reider. “ I sought to capture the grandeur\, intimacy and nostalgia of the landscape I grew up with.” \nPetrichor was recorded in August\, 2021 at SandBox\, a brand new performing arts venue in Sand City\, CA that’s run by cellist Michelle Djokic. In fact\, Reider first discovered the space (and its 1917 Steinway) while quarantining in the Monterey area during the pandemic\, and was immediately enamored with its sound. Two months later\, Reider was back at the SandBox\, having written and workshopped his new music. This time\, he was accompanied by engineers and co-producers Jacob Blumberg (who grew up with Reider in the Bay Area) and Jon Seale (of Mason Jar Music) with the intention of “capturing the vibe of Michelle’s space\,” as Reider puts it. \nThe word “petrichor” means the fresh smell of the earth after a first rain. “It felt like a potent metaphor for me in many ways\,” says Reider. “My homecoming to San Francisco after many years living on the East Coast\, the ongoing drought in California\, which is punctuated by occasional rains\, and the first glimmers of hope in the midst of the pandemic.” Driven by Reider’s gifted sense of melodicism\, playful song forms\, odd (and standard) time meters\, and a reverence of the solo piano tradition\, Petrichor embodies the many paths and paces of life\, which often lead us home again.

SUMMARY:Cathy Lu: Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Cathy Lu will give a talk about the project she worked on during her summer fellowship at Greenwich House Pottery. \nCathy is a California-based artist who explores experiences of immigration and cultural hybridity from an Asian American point of view. Cathy creates sculptures and installations that often draw from traditional Chinese imagery and objects to problematize what it means to be both Asian and American without being fully accepted by either culture. She currently teaches ceramics at Mills College and California College of the Arts. \nCathy earned an MFA from San Francisco Art Institute in sculpture and ceramics\, and a BFA in ceramics and a BA in Chinese language\, history\, and culture from Tufts University. Lu has shown her work at the American Museum of Ceramic Art (Pomona\, CA; 2020)\, Front Gallery (New Orleans\, LA; 2019)\, A-B Projects (Los Angeles\, CA; 2019)\, and Irving Street Projects (San Francisco\, CA; CA; 2018)\, among others. Lu has held residencies at Bemis (Omaha\, NE; 2021)\, LPP+ at Minnesota Street Project (San Francisco\, CA; 2019)\, and Anderson Ranch Arts Center (Snowmass Village\, CO; 2016). \nDuring her fellowship\, Cathy will work on a project called American Dream Pillows\, inspired by a tradition in ancient China that believed that resting on specific pillows could influence both your dreams and your future. Each of the twelve artists uses the medium of ceramics as a vehicle to illuminate and unpack layered personal histories. Looking forward or backward in time\, the artists are working to understand the present and create hybrid artifacts that will help future generations understand our complex histories. \nClay is not an easy medium to work with in New York City. It is a material that requires resources that are often scarce like space\, kilns\, transportation and funds. In a city where histories are constantly being erased and rebuilt clay can be a medium to unearth the past\, make sense of the present and converse with the future. Clay’s deep association with the past and its broad history of use by ancient cultures around the world makes it the perfect medium for contemporary artists to mine when engaging their own personal histories. Clay has a memory and the maker’s hand is inextricably part of the work. Some artists in this show look back and connect to ancient ways of making and motifs\, remixing ideas for the complexities of our contemporary moment. Other artists use ceramics for its malleability\, a characteristic that enables them to express the fleeting present. All of the artists in this show are tapping into a medium that holds many histories\, making topical objects for the present and relics for the future. This is the dirty work that artists do.
