SUMMARY:Spring 2024 Ceramic Sidewalk Sale
DESCRIPTION:Spring has sprung\, and there’s no time like the present to treat yourself or a loved one to a handmade piece of pottery! Whether you’re looking for the perfect Mother’s Day gift or are simply hoping to spruce up your space\, look no further than our Spring Sidewalk Sale. \nAll works for sale were generously donated by members of the Greenwich House Pottery community and proceeds directly benefit GHP’s operations. \nGreenwich House Pottery is a nonprofit ceramics center that has been supporting artists and promoting the field of ceramics for over 110 years. Starting with clay modeling classes in the earliest days of Greenwich House as part of its Handicraft School\, the Pottery flourished with the help of the community and philanthropic support from patrons like Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. GHP remains a stalwart of innovation and art.

SUMMARY:Uncharted: Dana Lyn with We the Gleaners
DESCRIPTION:Greenwich House Music School is pleased to present Dana Lyn with We the Gleaners in its annual Uncharted Concert Series\, part of the Baisley Powell Elebash Artists in Residence Program.\nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.\nLyn Website / Kanelos Website / Sanna Website / Lyn Instagram / Lyn Bandcamp\n \nBlurring the boundaries between sound art and chamber music\, We the Gleaners (Dana Lyn\, Matt Kanelos\, Kyle Sanna) forge a musical trip into a new world of events that may or may not have transpired. Dana Lyn plays music with Stew\, Hank Roberts\, Vincent D’Onofrio\, and Taylor Mac. She has also written music for Brooklyn Rider\, Irish poet Louis de Paor\, the Apple Hill String Quartet\, Palaver Strings\, A Far Cry\, audio stories for The New York Times\, and with her own band\, Mother Octopus. She also has recorded three albums with guitarist Kyle Sanna\, hailed by The New Yorker as a “first-rate\, versatile musician.” Kyle’s musical practice includes composition\, improvisation\, the recording studio\, coding\, and the traditional music of Ireland. With sought-after musical collaborator\, multi-instrumentalist and composer Matt Kanelos\, who has released four well-received albums as a leader\, they are collectively known as We the Gleaners. \nWe the Gleaners utilize found sound\, recorded thought\, and conversational improvisation to structure their compositions. The project mother speaks / mothers speak is inspired by interviews with their mothers as they were asked to speak about their perspectives on life\, motherhood\, partnership\, aging\, illness\, death … all of the big topics! Rather than writing songs about their mothers\, mother speaks / mothers speak aims to be music inspired by them. The performance will feature Dana Lyn on violin\, synth\, and samples; Kyle Sanna on guitar\, synth\, and samples; and Matt Kanelos on piano\, synth\, and samples. \n  \nThe Uncharted concert series\, now in its 10th year at Greenwich House Music School\, provides a much-needed resource for New York-based musicians to develop original material\, foster new collaborations\, and premiere first-look projects in an intimate concert setting. 100% of all ticket sales go directly to the artist. \nFor all press requests\, including artist or staff interviews\, press tickets or for additional information regarding the history and future of Uncharted\, please contact John Seroff at John@GreenHousePublicity.com.

SUMMARY:Systems of Reliance\, Casey Whittier
DESCRIPTION:Casey Whittier\nSystems of Reliance\n\nMay 16 – June 28\, 2024\n\nThe Jane Hartsook Gallery is pleased to present Casey Whittier’s New York City solo debut. Whittier composes her mixed-media work out of repeated\, small units\, adapting processes from a variety of craft disciplines to explore interdependence and the truths it reveals. Whittier focuses on apparent contradictions—for example\, that we can be both resilient and fragile\, or that something can be fleeting but also long-lasting. Whittier’s work shows that truth\, like connection\, can be multi-faceted. \n  \nWhittier links\, loops\, or weaves together discrete units of clay or fiber. This joining of separate units to create a larger composition symbolizes the interconnection inherent in our world. The individual components come together the way that one thought builds on another\, friends and family members support a loved one\, or elements of nature form a biome. Occasionally\, Whittier will break a link or cut a thread. These alterations are simultaneously minor and transformative. They remind us that\, despite the powerful resilience of the collective\, individuals still have agency to create significant change. Plants and flowers are a recurring motif in Whittier’s work as metaphors for interconnection. Plants depend on their ecological networks just as tapestries depend on their threads or people depend on their communities. Pull out one thread—an important pollinator or a close friendship—and the whole system changes. The world is made of these systems of reliance. \n  \nCasey Whittier is an artist based in Kansas City\, MO. She earned her MFA from the University of Colorado at Boulder and her BFA from Kansas City Art Institute. Recent exhibitions include: Daum Museum of Contemporary Art (Sedalia\, MO; 2024)\, Index Gallery (Dayton\, OH; 2023)\, and Craft Alliance (St. Louis\, MO; 2022). Whittier has been a resident artist at Red Lodge Clay Center\, the University of Florida\, and ArtFarm\, among others. She teaches ceramics and social practice at the Kansas City Art Institute\, is the president of ArtAxis\, and works with The Land Institute on their ongoing research into sustainable food and oilseed production. \nDownload the press release here. \nImages below: Alan Wiener\, courtesy Greenwich House Pottery 2024.

SUMMARY:Reflections in Music - Bruce Wolosoff
DESCRIPTION:As John Lennon famously said\, “amateurs borrow\, professionals steal” (itself stolen from T.S. Elliot’s “amateur poets borrow; mature poets steal.”) \nComposers are often inspired by other art forms\, but most frequently they are inspired by other music. Often these influences are unconscious and the composers themselves may be unaware of them\, and at other times there is a more deliberate “borrowing” which may or may not be acknowledged by the composer! \nThis program by Bruce Wolosoff will feature music from Bach inspired by Villa-Lobos\, music by Ravel written in the style of Borodin\, and a musical portrait of Chopin by Robert Schumann. A highlight of the evening will be the world premiere of Bruce Wolosoff’s epic Variations on House of the Rising Sun. \nAn evening not to be missed!
