DESCRIPTION:Lizzy Chemel\nThursday\, March 6\, 2025\nIn-Person Artist Talk\, 5:00 – 6:00 p.m.\nLizzy Chemel will give an in-person talk about the project she is working on on during her residency at Greenwich House Pottery. \n\nChemel is a New York City-based artist who makes sculptures in ceramic\, found materials\, wax\, bronze\, and cement. She uses mold-making to combine unlike objects that draw from her curiosity about undocumented ancestry. Adopted from Southern China and raised in California\, Chemel’s works are influenced by ancient Chinese artifacts\, translations\, and folklore\, as well as memories and iconography of her American upbringing. \nDuring her residency\, Chemel will continue developing a series of plaster molds that draw inspiration from the intersection of traditional Chinese culture and Hollywood kitsch. Her work will involve slip-casting from a range of molds\, including both direct life-casts of objects such as pig feet and stones\, as well as once-familiar items like Lincoln Logs that have been manipulated\, combined\, and resized. \nChemel earned her MFA in sculpture from New York University. Recent exhibitions include: Night Club Gallery (Minneapolis\, MN; 2023)\, Hyacinth Gallery (New York\,NY; 2023) Jane Hartsook Gallery (New York\, NY; 2022) \, 80WSE (New York\, NY; 2022)\, and Conduit Gallery (Ridgewood\, NY; 2021). She was a resident at A-Z West\, and is currently a studio assistant for Simone Leigh. \n\nThe talk is free and open to the public with RSVP.

DESCRIPTION:GHP Artists Exhibition\nOpening Reception | Thursday\, March 13\, 2025 | 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.\nExhibition on view March 13 – April 11\, 2025 \nThe Jane Hartsook Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition recognizing the talented artists who contribute to the Greenwich House Pottery (GHP) community. This exhibition showcases the artistic range of GHP’s makers\, each of whom uses the Pottery’s extensive resources to express their own creative voice in clay. From functional ceramics to sculpture\, this exhibition is as diverse and as interesting as the artists themselves. \nGreenwich House Pottery has been supporting artists and their projects since 1904. Since our first clay classes for neighborhood youth to our present-day educational program\, lecture series\, artist residency program\, and exhibition series\, we have been promoting the field of ceramics. We now serve more than 600 artists and students per term who learn from professional faculty and staff proficient in a range of topics from wheel throwing\, hand-building\, and mold-making to glaze chemistry and slip casting at our two studio locations. GHP also hosts workshops and lectures by leading ceramic artists from around the country and offers children the opportunity to work in clay through Greenwich House’s Youth Community Center. The artists in this exhibition represent the continuous achievement\, exploration and passion for ceramic arts that GHP has fostered for over 120 years. \nEach year four prizes are awarded to outstanding works in the exhibition. This year the Hiroe Hanazono Award for an exceptional slipcast work went to Labadie Guilhem\, the Madeline Sadin Award for an exceptional wheel-thrown work went to Helen Lau\, the Anna Siok Award for an exceptional handbuilt work went to Charlotte Shi\, the Director’s Choice for a piece that especially speaks to the Pottery’s Director went to Mirjana Ciric\, and the Collector’s Choice Award\, selected by Stephen Parahus\, went to Jung Choi. Each awardee receives $500 in firing credit to encourage and support the continuation of their ceramics practice. These awards were made possible this year with generous support from Greenwich House Pottery collector\, Stephen Parahus. \n

DESCRIPTION:Greenwich House Music School is pleased to present Michela Marino Lerman in its annual Uncharted Concert Series\, part of the Baisley Powell Elebash Artists in Residence Program.\nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.\nWebsite / Facebook / Instagram\n \nMichela Marino Lerman has been immersed in the art of tap dance since the age of five\, her journey shaped by some of the most influential masters of the craft. Her early performance experiences included dancing alongside Gregory Hines on Sesame Street while still in elementary school\, and she counts the legendary James “Buster” Brown among her mentors. As an honorary member of the Copasetics—a prestigious fraternity of tap dancers founded in 1949 in honor of Bill “Bojangles” Robinson—Lerman carries forward the rich legacy of tap in venues large and small\, from Jazz at Lincoln Center to her long-running jam session at Smalls. \nAs part of her Uncharted Residency\, Lerman will present Agape\, a performance exploring the concept of interdimensional love and the interconnectedness that stems from human understanding. Leading her group\, The Love Movement (featuring Russell Hall and Samir Langus)\, she fuses analog effects and digital samplers to engage in collective healing\, creating expressions of identity and joy as acts of resistance. Through her work\, Lerman continues to honor the tradition of tap while pushing its boundaries to explore new realms of creativity and connection. \nUncharted\, now in its eleventh year\, has been an invaluable resource for New York-based musicians to develop original material\, foster new collaborations\, and premiere first-look projects in an intimate concert setting.

It was in the campo in Veracruz\, immersed in nature and studying Son Jarocho\, that they truly came to understand the communal essence of the Fandango. This vibrant celebration\, a spontaneous fusion of musicians\, dancers\, and audience engaged in call-and-response\, became the cornerstone of their vision. It’s from this foundation that they began to build their sound—and community—bringing that energy back to the city\, forming Juntas Chicas. Today\, Juntas Chicas is shaped by the perspective of two women experimenting with the traditional forms and working in a genre long dominated by men\, influenced by collaborations with musicians from other genres that reflect the unique swirl of sounds in New York. \nExpanding the boundaries of Son Jarocho into a new century\, their Uncharted performance will continue to carry that dynamic energy to new spaces\, further expanding their community and pushing the evolution of the art form. \nUncharted\, now in its eleventh year\, has been an invaluable resource for New York-based musicians to develop original material\, foster new collaborations\, and premiere first-look projects in an intimate concert setting.

Born and raised in Thailand\, she later moved to Sweden to study music. Eventually\, she made her way to New York\, where she established herself as an electronic-influenced alternative Jazz singer\, composer\, and producer. Describing herself as a “research artist\,” Sirintip is driven by an insatiable curiosity\, seeking to answer profound questions through her music. \nHer latest project\, Mycelium\, is an interdisciplinary suite performed by a nine-piece ensemble\, three dancers\, and visual projections. Sirintip spent two weeks aboard a research vessel in the North Pacific\, collaborating with scientists studying plankton and fungi. This immersive experience allowed her to draw fascinating connections between the microscopic world of microorganisms and the larger narratives of human society. In another project\, Carbon\, she explored the impact of environmental change by sampling plastic waste to create rhythmic tracks and translating NASA’s climate data into striking musical representations of global temperature rise. \nFor her Uncharted performance\, Sirintip is developing a piece that investigates how emotion is physically stored in the body. Her work continues to evolve\, blending art\, science\, and technology in ways that invite audiences to reconsider the world around them. \nUncharted\, now in its eleventh year\, has been an invaluable resource for New York-based musicians to develop original material\, foster new collaborations\, and premiere first-look projects in an intimate concert setting.

Vargas spent years honing his craft as a jazz guitarist\, but today his musical journey spans across genres and continents. Known for his versatility\, he seamlessly blends influences from cumbia\, Hungarian gypsy music\, Cuban rumba\, Latin jazz\, blues\, and beyond. \nWith his early ensemble\, Bryan Vargas y ¡Ya Está!\, he sought to forge deeper connections to his cultural heritage\, embracing the rhythmic\, danceable elements of Afro-Latin jazz. Over time\, his musical journey expanded as he collaborated with new artists and projects\, including serving as the original guitarist for the Afrobeat collective Antibalas and playing a key role in the Fela! musical and its subsequent tour. These experiences led him to discover his unique sound—a powerful blend of tradition and innovation in which he writes instrumental music with messages of resistance. \nAs Vargas explains\, “It comes down to how I identify myself. I live in New York City\, a place where I am influenced by everything but still am able to honor my traditions and identity. I’m not pressured to conform to generic Americana. I’m allowed to be me\, to share these collective experiences. Starting with clay modeling classes in the earliest days of Greenwich House as part of its Handicraft School\, the Pottery flourished with the help of the community and philanthropic support from patrons like Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. DESCRIPTION:Ceramics Now\nDaniel Barragán\, Carson Culp\, Kristy Moreno\, Gina Tibbott\n\nOpening Reception | Thursday\, May 8\, 2025 | 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.\nExhibition on view May 8 – June 13\, 2025 \nThe Jane Hartsook Gallery is pleased to present work by our 2024 artists in residence: Daniel Barragán\, Carson Culp\, Kristy Moreno\, and Gina Tibbott. Greenwich House Pottery’s Artist Residency Program fosters artistic growth by providing makers time\, space\, materials\, and a creative community to explore and generate new bodies of work in ceramics in vibrant New York City. \nDaniel Barragán is an El Paso\, Texas-born\, New York City-based artist who works mostly in painting and sculpture. Through his artwork\, Barragán seeks to disrupt the new American landscape\, explore the shape of time\, and ask questions about cultural representation\, ownership\, assimilation\, and sexual identity\, with a focus on the American Southwest. During his residency\, Barragán developed a project that uses southwestern pottery and imagery drawn from punk\, rock\, and metal music to turn a critical eye towards the U.S./Mexico border. \nCarson Culp is a potter whose work is defined by his deep respect for the handmade and intentional making. Culp learned this approach through working for numerous studios and artists in Portland\, OR and honed it during his one-year apprenticeship at the renowned Leach Pottery. He continues to further his creative expression through numerous artist residencies. Teaching and mentorship are integral to his practice\, and Culp spent his residency passing on his philosophy of making and growing his voice as a potter.  \nKristy Moreno is a California-based artist who uses aesthetics influenced by Southern California counter cultures\, cartoons from the 1990s\, and folklore to create figurative work that imagines fictional communities in a decolonized future who are free from patriarchal structures. During her residency\, Moreno experimented with a range of matte and gloss mid- and low-fire glazes to better compliment her recent work\, and took time for creative exploration. \nGina Tibbott is a New York City-based artist whose ceramics practice is informed by her years working as a field archeologist. During her residency\, Tibbott used Gisela Richter’s The Craft of Athenian Pottery published in 1923 as a jumping off point to create new work based on ancient forms. The manual was written with technical insight provided by Maude Robinson (Pottery Director\, 1911 – 1941). They come from different parts of the world\, speak various languages (English\, Spanish\, Japanese\, Polish)\, and work across a wide range of spaces\, from orchestral settings to experimental theater. Despite their differences\, they come together to create a unified voice\, collaborating to understand how their individual expressions can fit into a collective whole. Even when words fall short\, they communicate through gesture\, rhythm\, and musical ideas\, with rhythm itself serving as their universal language. \nFor Uncharted\, Excelsis Percussion will present their environmental justice project\, Rooted in Rhythm\, an immersive 360-degree concert experience that places the performers directly within the audience. For this performance\, they will experiment with electronics and found objects\, to merge works by contemporary composers with the sounds of nature—chirping birds\, croaking frogs\, and dripping rain. Each performance is shaped by its unique setting\, ensuring that no two experiences are alike. His passion for music led him to New York City\, where he not only learned English but also experienced true diversity. It was on Broadway that he found a creative family—fellow Latinos who collaborated and supported one another through their shared experiences. From this community\, Jaime Lozano and the Familia was born\, a project inspired by the talented artists around him who lacked opportunities to share stories about the immigrant experience. Determined to change that\, Jaime began writing those stories himself. DESCRIPTION:Melissa Joseph\nWednesday\, May 21\, 2025\nIn-Person Artist Talk\, 4:00 – 5:00 p.m.\nMelissa Joseph will give an in-person talk about the project she is working on on during her residency at Greenwich House Pottery. \n\nJoseph is a New York City-based interdisciplinary artist whose art practice in craft-based media—especially ceramics and textiles—addresses themes of diaspora\, family history\, and the politics of how we occupy spaces. Joseph is particularly interested in connecting people through collective memory and shared experiences. \nJoseph earned an MFA from Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts\, an MAT from Rhode Island School of Design and a BA from New York University. Her work has been shown at Margot Samel (New York\, NY; 2023)\, Independent Art Fair (New York\, NY; 2023)\, and NADA Miami (Florida; 2021)\, among others. Joseph has participated in residencies including at Artpace San Antonio (San Antonio\, TX; 2024)\, the Archie Bray Foundation (Helena\, MT; 2022) and The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts (New York\, NY; 2021). \nDuring her residency\, Joseph will create ceramic inlay paintings that are an interpretation of the visual languages she uses in felt and paper. She will particularly focus on the technical side of constructing work from varied clay bodies and work to expand the size of these clay paintings. In addition to translating her visual language into clay\, Joseph will also create felt/ceramic hybrid works. \n\nThe talk is free and open to the public with RSVP.
