SUMMARY:Cosmic Artifacts\, Donté K. Hayes
DESCRIPTION:Cosmic Artifacts\nDonté K. Hayes\nOpening Reception | Thursday\, November 6\, 2025 | 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.\nExhibition on view November 6 – December 19\, 2025 \nThe Jane Hartsook Gallery at Greenwich House Pottery is pleased to present Cosmic Artifacts by Donté K. Hayes. In this new body of work\, Hayes examines objects not just as individual items\, but as pieces within a larger narrative interconnected to the greater African Diaspora. Born out of the desire to create the heirlooms that are missing\, lost\, and erased from his own cultural and family lineage\, Hayes creates sculptures that function as “future artifacts” that remix ancestral traditions\, respond to contemporary realities\, and envision resilient futures. \nInfluenced by hip-hop culture and science fiction\, Hayes uses clay as both material and metaphor\, building forms that are inscribed with thousands of etched lines made by a needle tool. These marks accumulate into patterns that echo hair\, raffia\, scars\, and inscriptions. The repetitive textures and incised patterns become meditations on memory\, ritual\, and renewal. The unglazed ceramic surfaces are an unobstructed record of his mark-making\, a way for him to imbue each sculpture with his own presence and memories using a material capable of spanning generations. These “cosmic artifacts” serve as conduits for reflection and transformation\, transporting the viewer to a quieter frame of mind where they can slow down and take a deeper look at the world around them. \nHayes is a New Jersey-based artist. He earned his MA and MFA from the University of Iowa and his BFA from Kennesaw State University. His work has been shown internationally\, including Design Miami (FL; 2025)\, Bernard A. Zuckerman Museum of Art (Kennesaw\, GA; 2023)\, the Armory Show (New York\, NY; 2021)\, and the 1-54 Art Fair (London\, England; 2019). SUMMARY:A Dance of Life: Violin Music of the AIDS Era
DESCRIPTION:Violinist Giancarlo Latta\, joined by pianist Robert Fleitz\, presents A Dance of Life: Violin Music of the AIDS Era\, a recital program that revives an important but neglected repertoire of works for violin and piano by composers who died during the AIDS crisis. Co-presented with ChamberQUEER and the New York City AIDS Memorial at downtown Manhattan’s Greenwich House Music School\, this program brings together seven outstanding compositions written between 1975 and 1991\, many of which have gone unrecorded and generally unperformed over the past several decades. Two larger-scale showcase works – Robert Savage’s Rhapsody and Meditation and Louis Weingarden’s Sonata: Les Violons du Bal – sit at the center of the performance\, alongside a new transcription for violin and piano of Chris DeBlasio’s Serenade for Violin and Organ\, Michael Seyfrit’s A Dance of Life\, and shorter works by Charles Buel\, Yvar Mikhashoff\, and Robert Nofsinger.  \nTickets to this one-night-only performance are free and advance RSVPs are strongly recommended. Seats may be reserved online through Eventbrite.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Amir Hariri
DESCRIPTION:Amir Hariri\nWednesday\, November 12\, 2025\nIn-Person Artist Talk\, 4:00 – 5:00 p.m.\nAmir Hariri will give an in-person talk about the project he is working on on during his residency at Greenwich House Pottery. \nHariri is a New York City-based artist and engineer who deconstructs the world around him to create abstract artwork and interventions that respond to contemporary challenges such as the pandemic and climate change. Inspired by individual and collective memories\, and a childhood of exploring abandoned buildings\, Hariri uses the language of decomposition and decay to transform the familiar and question our experiences and sense of history. \nHariri earned his Master of Engineering degree from Cornell University. After a decade working on design projects from concert halls and museums to glass designs for Apple\, he went on to study painting and printmaking at the Art Students League. His work is in public and private collections in the United States\, Italy\, Spain\, Hong Kong\, and Japan. Recent exhibitions of his work include Atamian Hovsepian Curatorial Practice (New York\, NY; 2024)\, PS122 Gallery (New York\, NY; 2023)\, and Wave Hill (Bronx\, NY; 2019). Hariri has participated in residencies at NARS Foundation\, the Museum of Arts and Design\, and the Children’s Museum of Manhattan. \nDuring his residency\, Hariri will expand his knowledge of handbuilding\, wheel-throwing\, and casting techniques\, and investigate how wood scaffolding and cement can be combined with these ceramic forms to create hybrid sculptures. Hariri will use the residency as a space for experimentation\, with the final aim of creating a site-responsive multimedia sculpture. \nThe talk is free and open to the public with RSVP.

SUMMARY:Texture and Form: A Workshop with Donté K. Hayes
DESCRIPTION:In this engaging handbuilding session\, Donté invites open conversation about clay as a medium that holds memory and challenges our perceptions of form and texture. The demonstration will explore the intentionality of mark-making\, the use of clay as a self-sufficient surface\, and the seamless integration of form and texture. Using his hands\, eyes\, and mind as tools\, Donté will construct a large\, complex form—working quickly and intuitively\, without armatures or interior supports. You can read more about his show Cosmic Artifacts in the Jane Hartsook gallery here. \n
