DESCRIPTION:The Big Sprig: Relief Sculptures\, Press Molds\, and Iterative Thinking\nJoin us on Saturday\, February 7 and Sunday February 8\, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.\nDive into the art of sculptural relief in this immersive two-day workshop with visiting artist Sophie Gibson! Learn to sculpt dynamic images in mid to high relief\, capturing depth and movement within compressed space. On the first day\, you’ll translate photographs or objects into sculpted clay forms using oil-based plasticine\, guided by classical modeling principles adapted from Edouard Lanteri. \nOn day two\, you’ll turn your relief into a functional press mold—an efficient way to reproduce and experiment with your designs. Explore creative surface techniques like color-layering\, marbling\, and texture-building while discovering how iterative making can expand your sculptural vocabulary. \nWhether you’re interested in testing glazes\, creating modular components\, or making wall-ready art pieces\, there are endless possibilities for experimentation and play. \n\n\nSophie Gibson (b. 1993)  is a figurative ceramic sculptor from Charlottesville\, VA. Gibson holds an MFA in Ceramic Art from the New York State College of Ceramics\, a  B.F.A. in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design\, and a B.A. in History from Brown University. Gibson has been awarded residencies at the Red Lodge Clay Center and Cordova Studios. Collected by the Alfred Ceramic Art Museum\, her work has also been exhibited in galleries throughout the eastern United States including the Jane Hartsook Gallery (NY)\, Fosdick-Nelson Gallery (NY)\, Ethel Sergeant Clark Smith Gallery (PA)\, The Visual Arts Center of Richmond (VA)\, Chroma Projects (VA)\, Second Street Gallery (VA)\, Gallery 130 (MS)\, and Granhoff Center for the Creative Arts (RI). Gibson currently lives and works in Connecticut\, where she serves as the Full-time Ceramic Faculty in the Visual Arts Department at the Loomis Chaffee School. \n\n\n

General Admission tickets are $20\, student and older adult (60+) tickets available for $15. \nDr. Sara Davis Buechner will be joined by special guests Katherine Needleman\, oboist and William Wen\, pianist to present Une Soirée avec Francis Poulenc. The program will include: \n\nSonata for Piano Four Hands (1918\, revised 1939)\nSonata for Oboe and Piano (1962)\nLes Soirées de Nazelles\, Suite pour Piano (1936)\n\nSara Davis Buechner \n \nKatherine Needleman: \nKatherine Needleman is a musician from Baltimore\, Maryland\, whose musical life began in the once-robust public school music programs\, where she played violin\, clarinet\, oboe\, keyboards\, and percussion. At sixteen\, she dropped out of high school to attend the Curtis Institute of Music\, and later had a brief\, instructive relationship with the Juilliard School that ended shortly after she won its oboe concerto competition. She has been playing the oboe professionally for a long time now—long enough to notice how her relationship to visibility\, inclusion\, and power in the field has changed over time. \nShe is the principal oboist of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and teaches at the Curtis Institute of Music. Her interests center on the relationship between composers\, performers\, and the stage. Recent highlights include accompanying her cellist daughter in the Haydn C-major Concerto at a middle-school assembly\, a recital that felt unusually right at a retirement home outside Philadelphia\, and an 8am Kansas performance of her works Stolen Prophet for oboe and piano and Spike Protein for twelve oboes. She enjoys arranging music she loves—by dead white men and by people who are not dead white men—to expand what the oboe gets to say. She also writes widely about classical music and its power structures\, and maintains a blog and newsletter of some notoriety. The New York Times once described her as a “small\, intense woman\,” which seems accurate enough. \n\n\nWilliam Wen: \nWilliam Wen\, young Chinese-American pianist from Brooklyn\, has studied at the Brooklyn College Preparatory and is now a pupil of Sara Davis Buechner at the Greenwich House School of Music. William has given numerous solo and chamber music performances in the New York area\, and will soon graduate from Brooklyn Technical High School. When he is not practicing the piano\, William can be found in research labs investigating organic chemistry and the pharmaceutical sciences

DESCRIPTION:PAUL AUSTERLITZ  AND THE VODOU HORN PRESENT THREE NEW VIDEOS AT GREENWICH HOUSE MUSIC SCHOOL \nDr. Paul Austerlitz and the Vodou Horn will perform at the Greenwich House School of Music at 8 pm on Saturday\, March 21\, 2026. Calling upon decades of musical\, cultural\, and spiritual research\, Dr. Austerlitz presents original jazz music inspired by ritual sounds from Haiti and the Dominican Republic\, focusing on the unique sound of the bass clarinet. \nThe concert will celebrate the release of three new videos focusing on the dovetailing spiritual traditions of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. A solo for the rarely-heard contrabass clarinet\, “Rainb Ow” presents refracted sound as a message from Danballah-Wedo\, the prismatic spirit of serpentine regeneration in Haitian mysticism. “Underground Palo” fuses traditional Afro-Dominican ritual drumming with contemporary improvisation\, combining wood-based timbres of bass clarinet and hand drumming. “Sabina Place” celebrates the euphoric atmosphere of Caribbean night-life. \nThe Vodou Horn features the Panamanian-American bassist Santi Debriano\, who has played with jazz legends such as Pharoah Sanders\, Randy Weston\, and Joe Lovano. The band also  presents Jean “Sky” Menesky\, who possesses vast experience playing tradition Vodou drums at ritual events as well as with Haitian roots performers such as Manbo Riva. On piano and drum set\, we present the fiery energy of Sungtaek Choo and Bryce Collins\, two “young lions” on the contemporary jazz scene. \nReed player\, composer\, and ethnomusicologist Paul Austerlitz combines his background as an ethnomusicologist specializing in Afro-Caribbean music with his creative work as a musician. As an instrumentalist\, Austerlitz plays bass and contrabass clarinets as well as tenor saxophone and other reed instruments. As a composer\, he weds his backgrounds as a creative artist and ethnomusicologist\, producing works incorporating music he researches\, focusing on Haiti\, the Dominican Republic\, and the country of his birth\, Finland. Dr. Austerlitz has shared the stage with Ed Blackwell\, Julius Hemphill\, Jimmy Knepper and other jazz luminaries. He has also played with the King of Merengue\, Joseíto Mateo\, and Haitian roots bands such as Foula. DESCRIPTION:The new music duo Tromboline\, featuring trombonist Gregory Erickson and  violinist Masha Lankovsky\, presents an evening of bold\, experimental performance that reimagines what classical chamber music can be. Blending music\, sound\, speech\, and even magic\, the program pushes at the edges of tradition. \nThe concert features world premieres\, including a work by Gallatin alum Leo Yablans honoring the voices of the Minneapolis resistance\, and an interactive piece inspired by the New York City transportation system by Hannah Cai Sobel. In a genre-defying highlight\, Gallatin student Theo Chattra joins the duo for what may be the first-ever collaboration for violin\, trombone\, and magician. \nFounded in 2022\, Tromboline has premiered more than a dozen experimental works in Paris\, Besançon\, and New York City. \n \nGregory Erickson is a Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies at New York University’s Gallatin School\, where he teaches courses on music\, modern literature\, popular culture\, and religion. He is the author of The Absence of God in Modernist Literature (Palgrave Macmillan\, 2007)\, Christian Heresy\, James Joyce\, and the Modernist Literary Imagination: Reinventing the Word (Bloomsbury 2022)\, and Speculative Television and the Doing and Undoing of Religion (Routledge 2023).  As a trombonist he is the principal trombonist of the Bronx Opera Orchestra and a member of numerous chamber and new music ensembles including the Thermophily Trio and Tromboline. He has performed across the United States and Europe and is featured on multiple recordings. \n \nMasha Lankovsky is a professor at the Versailles Conservatory in France and co-artistic director of the Shkolnikova Academy. As a violinist she has appeared in international festivals such as Schleswig Holstein (Germany)\, Britten Pears festival (England)\, the American Conservatoire in Fontainebleau (France) and she has been awarded multiple residencies at the Banff Centre (Canada). She was the violinist in the neoLIT chamber ensemble for many years and introduced many new works by female composers. Her recording “Russian Dreams\,” with pianist Byron Schenkman was released on the Centaur label and features rarely heard compositions by Taneyev\, Roslavets\, Medtner\, Prokofiev\, and Scriabin. Masha has written articles for The Strad magazine and her English translation and edition of the writings of the renowned pedagogue Yuri Yankelevich is published by Oxford University Press.

DESCRIPTION:Greenwich House Music School’s premiere jazz clarinet ensemble will honor performer/composers Geri Allen and Carla Bley featuring clarinet/alto saxophone soloist Lee Odom\, a founding member of the Dance Clarinets ensemble. \nStalwart Dance Clarinets member Peter Hess has provided heartfelt versions of Ms. Allen’s work for our small ensemble. Hess closely studied Allen’s piano playing to infuse these these brand new arrangements with her authentic energy and harmonic genius. Ms. Allen served as Associate Professor and Director of Jazz Studies at University of Pittsburg at the end of her life. \nThe program of Carla Bley’s big band music reflects decades of performances with her own jazz orchestra globally\, as well as the workshop presentations she led at colleges and universities. New music distribution credit to Marylou Williams\, Melba Liston\, and Coby Norita. \nThis concert is presented in memory of James “Jabbo” Ware. \nThis program is supported\, in part\, by public funds from NYU\, the New York State Council on the Arts\, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs\, the offices of Governor Kathleen Hochul\, and the New York State Legislature. Through the sound of the gayageum (Korean zither) and voice\, Kim creates space for listeners to fully inhabit feelings of sadness\, joy\, anger\, and peace—offering moments of reflection\, resonance\, and renewal. \nThe performance features DoYeon Kim (gayageum and vocals) alongside Tom Rainey (drums)\, Laura Cocks (flute)\, and Henry Fraser (bass)\, each contributing their distinct musical voice to the quartet’s expansive sound world. \nBio: \nDoYeon Kim is an internationally acclaimed artist known for her expansive\, pioneering performances and compositions\, and for introducing the gayageum—an ancient Korean zither—into contemporary music. Together\, they explore material rooted in Cuban\, Venezuelan\, and Argentine musical traditions. \nThe performance also features special appearances by Uncharted alum Mafer Bandola (bandola) and Willie Quintana (percussion) on select songs\, expanding the set into a layered\, communal exploration of voice\, place\, and shared musical language. \nBio: \nMiriam Elhajli is a song-improviser\, geographer\, and musicologist based in Flatbush\, Brooklyn. She works as a researcher at the Association for Cultural Equity and teaches at Citylore\, a nonprofit dedicated to the transmission of folklore in public schools. Elhajli has performed everywhere from carpeted basements and living rooms to Lincoln Center\, the Noguchi Museum\, miso factories\, women’s prisons\, and alleyways across the Lower East Side and is set to perform at Big Ears in March 2026. Her current work explores cross-cultural creation myths\, traditional shepherd routes in Catalonia\, extractivism\, and glossolalia through voice-driven\, exploratory performance. DESCRIPTION:Greenwich House Pottery is pleased to welcome Ezra Shales to the Barrow Street theater to present his new book Pitchers of American Life: Art Within Reach. \nPitchers of American Life: Art Within Reach explores the tactile pleasures of drinking vessels and traces the role of these objects as representative art and collective tools—episodes of American history that resonate today in our everyday lives and yearnings for sociability and communion. Discussion ranges from vessels within ancient cultures and religious and family rituals to the growth of mass production and contemporary consumer culture. Shales blends the social histories of art/artifacts with memories of working on a museum installation crew\, educating students and himself\, and finding a treasure in a yard sale; in each chapter he interprets a single object as a revealing time capsule. Might learning to love a chipped old jug be a better way to cope with aging than other prescriptions? This history of art in a cupboard can liberate us from the usual hierarchies of civilization and the expense of the Grand Tour to build compassion with our immense amount of old stuff. \n \nEzra Shales is Professor in the History of Art department at Massachusetts College of Art and Design and the author of The Shape of Craft (2017) and Made in Newark: Cultivating Industrial Arts and Civic Identity in the Progressive Era (2010). He has contributed to exhibition catalogs for artists Polly Apfelbaum\, Neil Brownsword\, Beth Cavener\, Kim Dickey\, and Shari Mendelson. He cut his teeth in New York City’s flea-markets and working as an art handler and then an educator at the Brooklyn Museum\, which turned into a chinamaniac\, aesthetic gadfly\, and lifelong scribbler. His newest book Pitchers of American Life: Art Within Reach condenses forty years of learning and ten dedicated to teaching ceramic history at Alfred\, the New York State College of Ceramics\, with the existential tailspins of being a devotee to material culture in an era of hyper affluence.
