SUMMARY:Reflections in Music - Bruce Wolosoff
DESCRIPTION:As John Lennon famously said\, “amateurs borrow\, professionals steal” (itself stolen from T.S. Elliot’s “amateur poets borrow; mature poets steal.”) \nComposers are often inspired by other art forms\, but most frequently they are inspired by other music. Often these influences are unconscious and the composers themselves may be unaware of them\, and at other times there is a more deliberate “borrowing” which may or may not be acknowledged by the composer! \nThis program by Bruce Wolosoff will feature music from Bach inspired by Villa-Lobos\, music by Ravel written in the style of Borodin\, and a musical portrait of Chopin by Robert Schumann. A highlight of the evening will be the world premiere of Bruce Wolosoff’s epic Variations on House of the Rising Sun. \nAn evening not to be missed!

SUMMARY:Uncharted: Dana Lyn with We the Gleaners
DESCRIPTION:Greenwich House Music School is pleased to present Dana Lyn with We the Gleaners in its annual Uncharted Concert Series\, part of the Baisley Powell Elebash Artists in Residence Program.\nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.\nLyn Website / Kanelos Website / Sanna Website / Lyn Instagram / Lyn Bandcamp\n \nBlurring the boundaries between sound art and chamber music\, We the Gleaners (Dana Lyn\, Matt Kanelos\, Kyle Sanna) forge a musical trip into a new world of events that may or may not have transpired. Dana Lyn plays music with Stew\, Hank Roberts\, Vincent D’Onofrio\, and Taylor Mac. She has also written music for Brooklyn Rider\, Irish poet Louis de Paor\, the Apple Hill String Quartet\, Palaver Strings\, A Far Cry\, audio stories for The New York Times\, and with her own band\, Mother Octopus. She also has recorded three albums with guitarist Kyle Sanna\, hailed by The New Yorker as a “first-rate\, versatile musician.” Kyle’s musical practice includes composition\, improvisation\, the recording studio\, coding\, and the traditional music of Ireland. With sought-after musical collaborator\, multi-instrumentalist and composer Matt Kanelos\, who has released four well-received albums as a leader\, they are collectively known as We the Gleaners. \nWe the Gleaners utilize found sound\, recorded thought\, and conversational improvisation to structure their compositions. The project mother speaks / mothers speak is inspired by interviews with their mothers as they were asked to speak about their perspectives on life\, motherhood\, partnership\, aging\, illness\, death … all of the big topics! Rather than writing songs about their mothers\, mother speaks / mothers speak aims to be music inspired by them. The performance will feature Dana Lyn on violin\, synth\, and samples; Kyle Sanna on guitar\, synth\, and samples; and Matt Kanelos on piano\, synth\, and samples. \n  \nThe Uncharted concert series\, now in its 10th year at Greenwich House Music School\, provides a much-needed resource for New York-based musicians to develop original material\, foster new collaborations\, and premiere first-look projects in an intimate concert setting. 100% of all ticket sales go directly to the artist. \nFor all press requests\, including artist or staff interviews\, press tickets or for additional information regarding the history and future of Uncharted\, please contact John Seroff at John@GreenHousePublicity.com.

SUMMARY:Uncharted: Raquel Acevedo Klein & Asher Kurtz
DESCRIPTION:Greenwich House Music School is pleased to present Raquel Acevedo Klein & Asher Kurtz in its annual Uncharted Concert Series\, part of the Baisley Powell Elebash Artists in Residence Program.\nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.\nWebsite / Facebook / Instagram / Bandcamp\n\nRecently named by The Washington Post as a “classical composer and performer to watch in 2022\,” conductor\, vocalist\, instrumentalist\, and visual artist Raquel Acevedo Klein has been described by composer Angélica Negrón as a “force to be reckoned with.” (The Washington Post) With her immense versatility as a musician and composer\, Klein is a highly sought after collaborator in the New York City region and surrounding areas. \nThe upcoming season includes performances with Lincoln Center in collaboration with New Latin Wave for FUTUROS\, New Ideas in Composition (Klein performs a selection of her compositions for voice and electronics); a month-long series of live performances with MoMA in collaboration with Shana Moulton and Nick Hallett for Meta/Physical Therapy\, an opera installation (Klein performs as lead vocalist); the SXSW premiere of Adrianne & The Castle (Klein co-composes the film score with Arcade Fire’s Richard Reed Parry\, and records vocals for the lead actress and underscoring of the film); The Shed inside their Sonic Sphere\, a 65-foot-diameter spherical concert hall suspended in air that features immersive\, 3D sound and light explorations of music (The Shed programs her multichannel electroacoustic vocal motet\, Polyphonic Interlace\, which she also performs live); and the premiere of Unfolding the Universe and song cycle set in VR connecting the scientific breakthroughs of the James Webb Space Telescope to human consciousness (as composer in collaboration with VR artist Ashley Zelinskie and in coordination with NASA). Klein is also recording vocals with Grammy Award-winning vocal octet Roomful of Teeth to accompany the upcoming Ken Burns film Leonardo da Vinci\, scored by Caroline Shaw. Opera Philadelphia has also commissioned Klein to compose her first opera to be premiered in a future season\, which she will perform in as the lead role. \nKlein’s dynamic compositions and electric performances have captured the attention of The New York Times\, The New Yorker\, and The Los Angeles Times. Klein’s conducting credits include the New York Philharmonic\, Roomful of Teeth\, the Grammy Award-winning Brooklyn Youth Chorus\, Beth Morrison Projects\, and the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. She has premiered vocal works by John Adams\, Philip Glass\, Nico Muhly\, Bryce Dessner\, and Paola Prestini. Klein was born and raised in Brooklyn in a Puerto Rican and Colombian family of visual artists. \nFor her Uncharted performance\, Klein joins guitarist Asher Kurtz in the creation of a body of original music featuring voice\, effects-processing\, electronics\, guitarlele\, analog tape loops\, and baritone guitar\, in a performance that will be divided into two parts. The first half will be dedicated to music that explores our human consciousness and cosmic origins through the James Webb Space Telescope. The Webb is an unparalleled yet tangible lens that enables us to observe our past dating back to the first galaxies. This is the story of how we came to exist\, set to music. Each piece incorporates scientific concepts from the telescope as building blocks for its composition. The second half will be a collection of original pieces spanning a variety of genres\, such as classical\, jazz\, opera\, Arabic music\, electroacoustic music\, songwriting\, and immersive audio experiences. “Much of my work is about audience engagement\,” says Klein. “I’m building stories and music that are meant to help engage empathy for communities or ideas outside of the listeners’ immediate experience. The desire for that sense of connection often draws me into creative collaboration as a composer\, as a vocalist and as an instrumentalist. For my Uncharted performance\, I wanted to offer a sort of charcuterie plate of those connections and to celebrate with some of the colleagues that have joined me on my way.” \n\nThe Uncharted concert series\, now in its 10th year at Greenwich House Music School\, provides a much-needed resource for New York-based musicians to develop original material\, foster new collaborations\, and premiere first-look projects in an intimate concert setting. 100% of all ticket sales go directly to the artist. \nFor all press requests\, including artist or staff interviews\, press tickets or for additional information regarding the history and future of Uncharted\, please contact John Seroff at John@GreenHousePublicity.com.

SUMMARY:Uncharted: Alea - Deja Que se Rompa Todo
DESCRIPTION:Greenwich House Music School is pleased to present Alea in its annual Uncharted Concert Series\, part of the Baisley Powell Elebash Artists in Residence Program.\nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.\nWebsite / Facebook / Instagram / X\n \nWith a welcoming sound that embraces cumbia\, vallenato\, rancheras\, R&B and jazz\, the singer-songwriter Alea moves her audiences with messages of the spirit\, social consciousness and love. Originally from La Guajira\, Colombia\, and now based in Brooklyn\, Alea’s performance encompasses an entire generation of ethno-futuristic and folkloric music. They are celebrations of Latin America and new definitions of what “Latin Alternative” can be. Her latest album\, 2021’s Alborotá\, was shortlisted as among the Best Latin Music of the year by both Rolling Stone and NPR. Alea is currently crafting a new album\, set to be unveiled in singles in 2024. Her latest work ventures into electronic sounds\, R&B and Latin soul. With this bold exploration\, Alea continues to push the boundaries of her artistry\, promising an even more dynamic and diverse musical experience for audiences. \nDeja Que se Rompa Todo (Let It All Break) is a new musical work that embarks on an introspective journey through heartbreak\, transformation\, and self-discovery. Contrary to the anticipated melancholy tone\, it evolves into a celebration of shedding layers to forge this musical expression – a resounding proclamation of self-love. \nDrawing from personal journal entries\, Alea crafts songs spanning R&B\, Latin soul\, and electronic sounds. Infused with movement and transformation\, the performance showcases piercing melodies\, electric guitar riffs\, and Afro-inspired choreography brought to life by a remarkable ensemble of dancers and musicians. The band for this performance includes Berta Moreno (tenor sax and vocals)\, Raquel Baena (trombone and vocals)\, Andrés Fonseca (drums)\, Argelia Arreola (vocals and dance)\, Luis D’ Elias (electric guitar and vocals)\, PJ Duffy (electric bass)\, and Felipe Fournier (MD). \nThe Uncharted concert series\, now in its 10th year at Greenwich House Music School\, provides a much-needed resource for New York-based musicians to develop original material\, foster new collaborations\, and premiere first-look projects in an intimate concert setting. 100% of all ticket sales go directly to the artist. \nFor all press requests\, including artist or staff interviews\, press tickets or for additional information regarding the history and future of Uncharted\, please contact John Seroff at John@GreenHousePublicity.com.

SUMMARY:Uncharted: Queen Esther - Blackbirding
DESCRIPTION:Greenwich House Music School is pleased to present Queen Esther in its annual Uncharted Concert Series\, part of the Baisley Powell Elebash Artists in Residence Program.\nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.\nWebsite / Facebook / Instagram / YouTube\n \nArmed with original songs\, formidable vocal chops and a powerhouse of a band\, Queen Esther uses her Southern roots to create a sound she calls Black Americana. Described as “… the unknown queen of Americana…” (Feedback\, Norway)\, “… a Black Lucinda Williams…” and a “… brutal\, original\, explosive single…” (Vanity Fair\, Spain)\, Queen Esther’s creative output musically is the culmination of several critical Southern elements\, not the least of which are years of recording and touring internationally as frontwoman for several projects with her mentor\, harmolodic guitar icon James “Blood” Ulmer\, including a stint in his seminal band\, Odyssey. Raised in Atlanta\, GA\, and embedded in Charleston\, SC’s Lowcountry – a region with African traditions and Black folkways that span centuries and constantly inform her work – Harlem-based producer\, vocalist\, songwriter\, musician and performer Queen Esther uses her Gullah roots as a touchstone to explore cultural mores in America\, deconstructing well-worn historical narratives while creating a reclamation-driven soundscape. \nQueen Esther’s creative output in New York City has led to prolific collaborations in neo-vaudeville\, alt-theater\, various alt-rock factions\, (neo) swing bands\, trip-hop DJs\, spoken word performances\, jazz combos\, jam bands\, numerous blues configurations\, original Off-Broadway plays and musicals\, experimental music\, art noise and performance art.  She refines her skills with performances in the city as she writes\, produces and releases jazz and Black Americana albums on her label EL Recordings\, thanks to an admin publishing deal with Bug Music (now BMG).  She has self-released two singles and seven critically acclaimed albums\, including the Lady Day tinged Things are Looking Up (April 2024) and Blackbirding (March 2025). A member of SAG/AFTRA\, Actors Equity\, Dramatists Guild and the Recording Academy\, 2023 artist fellowships include Joe’s Pub Working Group and Keychange\, as well as a playwriting residency with the WP Theater Pipeline Playlab and The Orchard Project. \nQueen Esther created Blackbirding as a reclamation-driven soundtrack of alt-Americana songs while living on the Gettysburg battlefield during an All Media Artist Residency at Gettysburg National Military Park\, through the National Park Service. This album serves as a requiem for the Antebellum South\, Reconstruction and the Black folk who lived through it. Ultimately\, they begin the work of unraveling the reason why America’s Civil War has never really ended.

SUMMARY:Uncharted: Camila Meza and Aaron Goldberg
DESCRIPTION:Greenwich House Music School is pleased to present Camila Meza and Aaron Goldberg in its annual Uncharted Concert Series\, part of the Baisley Powell Elebash Artists in Residence Program.\nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.\nWebsite / Instagram / Bandcamp / Patreon\n \nEqually prized as a vocalist\, guitarist\, and composer\, Camila Meza has uplifted audiences worldwide with her assured and beautiful singing\, highly advanced guitar (both self-accompaniment and blistering solo work)\, and vivid\, melodic songwriting that reveals complex layers with every listen. \nShe’s been hailed by The New York Times for her “appealing combination of lightness and depth … singing in a bright\, clear voice against the agile stir of a first-rate band. Her improvising\, on electric or acoustic guitar\, is serious business …” In 2022 she was named “#1 Rising Star Female Vocalist” by Downbeat Magazine. Meza released her most recent album\, Ambar\, on Sony Music Masterworks\, producing it herself and proudly unveiling the Nectar Orchestra\, a collaboration with bassist and arranger Noam Wiesenberg. \nTransmutation Songs will include original compositions by Camila Meza as well as songs from different eras and countries in Latin America from artists such as Milton Nascimento\, Violeta Parra\, Jorge Drexler\, Victor Jara\, Gabriela Mistral\, and more\, that reflect its long history of overcoming struggle and constant spirit to create hope and vision. In an intimate duo setting with Aaron Goldberg (piano) and Meza (voice and guitar)\, the songs will allow moments of improvisation and conversation as an exploratory way to connect with each other. The purpose is to illustrate our shared humanity and shine a light on the potential we have as humans to lean toward harmony and beauty.

SUMMARY:Live After Dark: Nour Harkati at Bryant Park

This performance is free and open to the public! \nSinger/songwriter Nour Harkati draws creative inspiration both from his birthplace of Tunisia and from his nomadic exploration of the lands and disparate sounds of North Africa\, Europe\, and New York City. Spiced with enigmatic strings\, handclaps\, muted brass and Harkati’s warm vibrato voice\, these are songs that transliterate their Tunisian lyrics into the beautiful and familiar language of a busker’s entreaty to stop and appreciate rare beauty. presents a live performance of his most recent releases\, a dreamy and delicately filigreed fusion of indie pop and traditional Arabic music. SUMMARY:Uncharted: Oran Etkin Duo with Sasha Berliner
DESCRIPTION:Greenwich House Music School is pleased to present Oran Etkin in its annual Uncharted Concert Series\, part of the Baisley Powell Elebash Artists in Residence Program.\nDoors open at 7:30\nWebsite / Instagram / YouTube   \nOran Etkin’s constantly evolving practice originates from his openness to collaboration and to forging deep musical connections that transcend traditional boundaries. For his 2023 Uncharted concert\, Etkin has enlisted the young vibraphonist Sasha Berliner (Downbeat Magazine’s 2020 Critics Poll “Rising Star”) to join him in the premiere of their new and as-yet-unnamed duo\, employing electronics and mixers to accentuate the merger of Oran on multiple woodwinds – including clarinet\, bass clarinet\, and tenor saxophone – with Sasha on vibraphone. Etkin and Berliner first performed together in the summer of 2021 at the Hamptons Jazz Festival\, laying the groundwork for this project. Now\, through their Uncharted residency\, they will delve even deeper into the unique sounds their instruments can create in tandem. Their bold compositions\, intended for eventual recording\, will take inspiration from the natural cycles of decomposition and regeneration\, explicitly riffing off motivic and textural development and disintegration. Etkin and Berliner will transform the Greenwich House Music School’s Recital Hall into a custom-built laboratory\, aiming to build something absolutely original and truly “uncharted”. Don’t miss this chance to see their experiment come to life for the first time!
