Ramos embodies all of her musical influences whether classical\, mariachi\, salsa\, merengue\, or hip-hop\, always creating a unique and refreshing sound. Her versatility\, natural improvisational skills and beautiful tone has made her one of the top Latin artists in New York City. Her latest album\, Sin Fronteras\, recorded in Kansas City in collaboration with over twenty-five musicians and a fusion of Americana\, country\, and Rancheras was a true testament to the innovations and the creative freedom she expresses. \nRamos will bring a little bit of this Kansas City flavor back home to New York City for this Uncharted performance\, including special guest trombone extraordinaire Trevor Turla\, the brilliant Ezgi on cello\, and New York’s very own Felipe Fournier on drums\, and a few special guests. Originally from La Guajira\, Colombia\, and now based in Brooklyn\, Alea’s performance encompasses an entire generation of ethno-futuristic and folkloric music. They are celebrations of Latin America and new definitions of what “Latin Alternative” can be. Her latest album\, 2021’s Alborotá\, was shortlisted as among the Best Latin Music of the year by both Rolling Stone and NPR. Alea is currently crafting a new album\, set to be unveiled in singles in 2024. Her latest work ventures into electronic sounds\, R&B and Latin soul. With this bold exploration\, Alea continues to push the boundaries of her artistry\, promising an even more dynamic and diverse musical experience for audiences. \nDeja Que se Rompa Todo (Let It All Break) is a new musical work that embarks on an introspective journey through heartbreak\, transformation\, and self-discovery. Contrary to the anticipated melancholy tone\, it evolves into a celebration of shedding layers to forge this musical expression – a resounding proclamation of self-love. \nDrawing from personal journal entries\, Alea crafts songs spanning R&B\, Latin soul\, and electronic sounds. DESCRIPTION:Greenwich House Music School is pleased to present Queen Esther in its annual Uncharted Concert Series\, part of the Baisley Powell Elebash Artists in Residence Program.\nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.\nWebsite / Facebook / Instagram / YouTube\n \nArmed with original songs\, formidable vocal chops and a powerhouse of a band\, Queen Esther uses her Southern roots to create a sound she calls Black Americana. Described as “… the unknown queen of Americana…” (Feedback\, Norway)\, “… a Black Lucinda Williams…” and a “… brutal\, original\, explosive single…” (Vanity Fair\, Spain)\, Queen Esther’s creative output musically is the culmination of several critical Southern elements\, not the least of which are years of recording and touring internationally as frontwoman for several projects with her mentor\, harmolodic guitar icon James “Blood” Ulmer\, including a stint in his seminal band\, Odyssey. Raised in Atlanta\, GA\, and embedded in Charleston\, SC’s Lowcountry – a region with African traditions and Black folkways that span centuries and constantly inform her work – Harlem-based producer\, vocalist\, songwriter\, musician and performer Queen Esther uses her Gullah roots as a touchstone to explore cultural mores in America\, deconstructing well-worn historical narratives while creating a reclamation-driven soundscape. \nQueen Esther’s creative output in New York City has led to prolific collaborations in neo-vaudeville\, alt-theater\, various alt-rock factions\, (neo) swing bands\, trip-hop DJs\, spoken word performances\, jazz combos\, jam bands\, numerous blues configurations\, original Off-Broadway plays and musicals\, experimental music\, art noise and performance art.  She refines her skills with performances in the city as she writes\, produces and releases jazz and Black Americana albums on her label EL Recordings\, thanks to an admin publishing deal with Bug Music (now BMG).  She has self-released two singles and seven critically acclaimed albums\, including the Lady Day tinged Things are Looking Up (April 2024) and Blackbirding (March 2025). A member of SAG/AFTRA\, Actors Equity\, Dramatists Guild and the Recording Academy\, 2023 artist fellowships include Joe’s Pub Working Group and Keychange\, as well as a playwriting residency with the WP Theater Pipeline Playlab and The Orchard Project. \nQueen Esther created Blackbirding as a reclamation-driven soundtrack of alt-Americana songs while living on the Gettysburg battlefield during an All Media Artist Residency at Gettysburg National Military Park\, through the National Park Service. This album serves as a requiem for the Antebellum South\, Reconstruction and the Black folk who lived through it. Her improvising\, on electric or acoustic guitar\, is serious business …” In 2022 she was named “#1 Rising Star Female Vocalist” by Downbeat Magazine. Meza released her most recent album\, Ambar\, on Sony Music Masterworks\, producing it herself and proudly unveiling the Nectar Orchestra\, a collaboration with bassist and arranger Noam Wiesenberg. \nTransmutation Songs will include original compositions by Camila Meza as well as songs from different eras and countries in Latin America from artists such as Milton Nascimento\, Violeta Parra\, Jorge Drexler\, Victor Jara\, Gabriela Mistral\, and more\, that reflect its long history of overcoming struggle and constant spirit to create hope and vision. ALICIA\, EL BALLET Y YO  \n11:30 AM  \nTESOROS DE MEXICO  \n3:00 PM  \nALICIA\, EL BALLET Y YO  \nA story told in Spanish about a girl’s journey learning the history of ballet comes to life through movement and an interactive experience for the audience. Presented by Reyna Pérez\, author of the book Alicia\, el ballet y yo (Alicia\, ballet and me). Ms. Perez is a ballet pedagogue and ballet coach for Mexico’s National Ballet Company. This work features projected book visuals with English subtitles.  \nReyna Pérez trained in ballet at the Mexican Dance Academy and graduated from a BSc in Biology at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). She has been a dander\, taught and created works for Ballet Clásico de México\, Mexican Dance Academy\, Ballet Independiente\, Emma Pulido\, Mexico’s National Dance Company and The Bolshoi Ballet Academy\, among others. From 1980 to 1982\, she was awarded a scholarship for postgraduate studies in ballet pedagogy at The Bolshoi Ballet Academy. She has been a guest artist in Bolivia\, Bulgaria and Costa Rica\, and a teacher\, consultant for festivals and schools\, and grant juror for Mexico’s National Endowment for Arts and Culture (FONCA). In 2022\, she founded Ardentía Dance Company\, which she still directs. In 2003\, she published Alicia\, el ballet y yo (Alicia\, ballet and me). Pérez has received multiple awards such as Una vida en la danza (A Lifetime in Dance Award) and the Xochipilli Award. She is currently a teacher and régisseur at Mexico’s National Dance Company.  \nTESOROS DE MEXICO  \nPianist Cesar Reyes presents “Treasures of Mexico.” A cultural and didactic journey through Mexico’s musical works for the piano: Dances\, Sandungas\, Rhapsodies\, and Ballads. The history\, customs\, and traditions of Mexico are combined In these musical gems from the Revolution to the present day.  \n“Recipient of the 2020-2023 Performing Artists with Trajectory Program of the System of Support for Creation and Cultural Projects (SACPC).”  \nCésar Reyes is a prominent advocate for Mexican and Latin American music. Reyes has performed on stages such as Carnegie Hall\, Palacio de Bellas Artes\, and Teatro de las Artes\, and performed at Switzerland’s Semaine Internationale de Piano et de Musique de Chambre. He has been invited to give lecture-recitals for the Society for American Music\, American Musicological Society\, Yale University\, State University of New York\, University of New Mexico\, and Conservatoire cantonal du Valais\, Switzerland. Reyes is the visionary behind the New York Festival of Piano and Latin American Song. Reyes refined his skills at the National Conservatory of Music\, National Arts Center\, and City University of New York\, mentored by Cuban educator German Diez\, linked to Claudio Arrau. Currently honored in the 2020-2023 Program for Established Performers by the Support Program for Creation and Cultural Projects (SACPC)\, Reyes leads a project that spotlights Mexican piano repertoire nationwide.

SUMMARY:Replaying the Tape - Jane Boxall
DESCRIPTION:“Replay the tape a million times… and I doubt that anything like Homo sapiens would ever evolve again.” — Stephen J Gould   \n‘Replaying the Tape’ is a collaboration between women practitioners: New-York based composer Dr. Jane Boxall\, palaeontologist Dr. Frankie Dunn\, and poet Penny Boxall. We will conjure an imaginary menagerie of animals which might have existed had the dice-throw of evolution fallen differently. Jane will compose and premiere new music for tape and live percussionist\, which in a performance setting will interweave with the live poetry performance. The tape aspect will include field recordings from Dr. Dunn’s archaeological digs\, tape manipulation of found sounds\, and excerpts from research and altered samples from the new poetry itself. The live percussion part will have choreographic and visual elements. Penny Boxall will write new poems for the project\, and perform these live in concert with me.   \nOur project will help make palaeontology accessible to a new audience\, and writing workshops and legacy recordings make the project truly inclusive. By engaging with cutting-edge research about the ancient origins of animal life\, we will make accessible an area which not only suffers from an image problem (palaeontology has long been perceived as an area of science difficult for women to enter\, and for the public to engage with)\, but which is ripe for creative interpretation.   \nMusic and poetry bring the remote closer; this project might enable adults and children to have an emotional response to an abstract area of science. Our aim is to imagine\, through words and sound\, animals which have never been\, but could have existed: we wish to invite our audience to consider what role chance plays in our own existence.

DESCRIPTION:The innovative Reflections in Music series is back\, with artistic director Bruce Wolosoff and a group of all-star musicians inviting audiences on a soul-stirring journey through classical music with Sound & Spirit(s).  \nThis program promises an exploration of sacred (and perhaps a touch of not-so-sacred) musical realms\, featuring composer and pianist Bruce Wolosoff\, violinist Michelle Ross\, and cellist Clarice Jensen performing music by Arvo Pärt\, Eric Satie\, and Olivier Messiaen. What makes this program even more extraordinary is that the performers are all accomplished composers themselves and will be performing their own compositions in addition to the classics.  \nA highlight of the evening will be the world premiere of a A Piano and a Cello Walk into a Bar\, a new concert work by distinguished film composer Carter Burwell.  \nReflections is a 501(c)3 nonprofit which hopes to bring the appreciation of classical music to new audiences and to spark new ways of thinking about and engaging with the classical music experience to those who are already music lovers.  \nhttps://www.reflectionsinmusic.org/  \nArtist Bios: \nBruce Wolosoff  \n“Bruce Wolosoff is a formidable pianist and composer” (Gramophone) who has been lauded as “an authentic American voice” for his integration of classical\, jazz\, blues\, and contemporary influences. Recent projects include the solo piano album “Memento” on Avie Records\, which is currently in rotation on radios stations throughout the world. “Paradise Found\,” a recent album of Wolosoff’s music for cello and piano that he recorded with cellist Sara Sant’Ambrogio was a Billboard Top 10 bestselling classical album. Wolosoff has recently completed a double concerto “At the Still Point of the Turning World” for violinist Michael Guttman and cellist Jing Zhao.  \nUpon its release in 2018\, the Wolosoff concerto for cello & orchestra\, performed by Sara Sant’Ambrogio with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Grzegorz Nowak was also a Billboard Top 10 classical album. Critic Jerry Dubins of Fanfare Magazine described the concerto as one of “compelling beauty” that “can be declared an instant masterpiece.” Wolosoff collaborated with the late choreographer Ann Reinking on two award winning ballets\, “The White City” and “A Light in the Dark.”  \nBruce Wolosoff is the artistic director of Reflections in Music.   \nClarice Jensen  \nClarice Jensen is a composer and cellist based in Brooklyn\, NYC who graduated with a BM and MM from the Juilliard School. As a solo artist\, Clarice has developed a distinctive compositional approach\, improvising and layering her cello through shifting loops and a chain of electronic effects to open out and explore a series of rich\, drone-based sound fields. Pulsing\, visceral and full of color\, her work is deeply immersive\, marked by a wonderful sense of restraint and an almost hallucinatory clarity. Meditative yet with a sculptural sharpness and rigor that sets it apart from the swathe of New Age / DIY droners\, she has forged a very elegant and precise vision.  \nHer music has been described by Self-Titled as “heavily processed\, incredibly powerful neo-classical pieces that seem to come straight from another astral plane”; by Boomkat as “languorously void-touching ideas\, scaling and sustaining a sublime tension”; whilst Bandcamp remarked upon “a kaleidoscope of pulsing movement rich in acoustic beating and charged with other psychoacoustic effects\, constantly shifting in density and viscous timbre.”  \nJensen’s striking debut album For This From That Will Be Filled was released in April 2018 on the Berlin-based label Miasmah and followed in September 2019 with the “Drone Studies” EP\, a cassette release via Geographic North. Signing to FatCat’s 130701 imprint (Max Richter\, Jóhann Jóhannsson\, Hauschka\, Dustin O’Halloran\, etc.) in late Summer 2019\, her sophomore album The experience of repetition as death was released April 2020. Naming it among the top 50 albums of 2020\, NPR remarked “This collection of requiems for a dying mother ranks among the great ambient albums of the 21st century.” Her new album Esthesis was released in October 2022.  \nJensen recently scored three feature films – Amber Sealey’s No Man of God premiered at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival; Takeshi Fukunaga’s Ainu Mosir\, premiered at the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival; Fernanda Valadez’s 2020 Sundance Film Festival award-winner Sin Señas Particulares (Identifying Features)\, for which Jensen was nominated for a 2021 Ariel Award for Best Original Music by the Mexican Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences.  \nA versatile collaborator\, Jensen has recorded and performed with a host of stellar artists including Jóhann Jóhannsson\, Max Richter\, Björk\, Stars of the Lid\, Dustin O’Halloran\, Nico Muhly\, Taylor Swift\, Michael Stipe\, the National and many others. In her role as the artistic director of ACME (the American Contemporary Music Ensemble)\, she has helped bring to life some of the most revered works of modern classical music\, including pieces by Philip Glass\, Steve Reich\, Terry Riley\, Gavin Bryars\, and more.  \nMichelle Barzel Ross  \nMichelle Barzel Ross is a violinist\, composer\, and multi-instrumental improviser. A protege of Itzhak Perlman-turned-multidisciplinary artist\, Michelle is known for her debut album\, pop-up project and blog Discovering Bach: Complete Sonatas and Partitas of J.S. Bach.  Michelle is featured on Movement 11’ of Jon Batiste’s GRAMMY winning Best Album of the Year: We Are.  Michelle was recently guest 1st violinist with the Juilliard String Quartet for US and European tours. Passionate about expanding the bounds of contemporary music as both a creator and performer\, Michelle is a member of Ensemble Échappé\, a guest with International Contemporary Ensemble\, co-curator of Lucerne Festival Forward and faculty at Lucerne Festival Contemporary. Michelle was recently the soloist in Arvo Pärt’s Fratres with James Blachly and EXO at the Met’s Temple of Dendur celebration of Arvo Pärt.  Collaboration highlights also include Bach Double with Itzhak Perlman\, Michael Tilson Thomas and San Francisco Symphony\, and Musician from Marlboro tours. Michelle has been guest concertmaster all around the world\, such as with Orchestre de Paris\, Radio France\, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra\, London Symphony Orchestra\, Mahler Chamber Orchestra\, Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra\, and others. Recent compositional highlights include creating an electronic city-wide installation piece for Lucerne Festival. Join Julie – a wonderful raconteur as well as songwriter – for a very special evening.  \nWho doesn’t know “From a Distance\,” a song that’s now a part of our DNA. A dream of better times\, a prayer even.  \nJulie Gold came to the Village in 1978\, in pursuit of her own dream of becoming a songwriter. Bohemia was no longer cheap\, and she worked endless jobs to keep afloat. Just before her 30th birthday\, the piano she’d grown up playing was dispatched from Philadelphia by her parents.  \n“I took the day off work to be home when my piano arrived\, and I remember how it glistened in the sun as the movers lowered it off the truck. My piano. My truest love and friend. My confidante. Back together again after all these years. It came into my little\, one room apartment and fit just where I hoped it would. The movers told me that it had been on the truck for 24 hours\, so I had to give it a chance to settle. They said I couldn’t play it for a full day. So\, there we were in the same room\, unable to make music….  \n“The next day I sat down and ‘From a Distance’ just poured out of me. On one hand\, it took me two hours to write. On the other hand\, it took me 30 years. Pick whichever hand makes you happy. I love them both.”  \nThe rest\, as they say\, is history. Nanci Griffith recorded it on her debut album and on June 16\, 1988\, Julie and Nanci played Carnegie Hall. “All my relatives came up from Philadelphia to share the miracle… In many ways\, I am their American Dream. SUMMARY:Uncharted: Oran Etkin Duo with Sasha Berliner
DESCRIPTION:Greenwich House Music School is pleased to present Oran Etkin in its annual Uncharted Concert Series\, part of the Baisley Powell Elebash Artists in Residence Program.\nDoors open at 7:30\nWebsite / Instagram / YouTube   \nOran Etkin’s constantly evolving practice originates from his openness to collaboration and to forging deep musical connections that transcend traditional boundaries. For his 2023 Uncharted concert\, Etkin has enlisted the young vibraphonist Sasha Berliner (Downbeat Magazine’s 2020 Critics Poll “Rising Star”) to join him in the premiere of their new and as-yet-unnamed duo\, employing electronics and mixers to accentuate the merger of Oran on multiple woodwinds – including clarinet\, bass clarinet\, and tenor saxophone – with Sasha on vibraphone. Etkin and Berliner first performed together in the summer of 2021 at the Hamptons Jazz Festival\, laying the groundwork for this project. Now\, through their Uncharted residency\, they will delve even deeper into the unique sounds their instruments can create in tandem. Their bold compositions\, intended for eventual recording\, will take inspiration from the natural cycles of decomposition and regeneration\, explicitly riffing off motivic and textural development and disintegration. Etkin and Berliner will transform the Greenwich House Music School’s Recital Hall into a custom-built laboratory\, aiming to build something absolutely original and truly “uncharted”. Don’t miss this chance to see their experiment come to life for the first time!
