Black History Month at Independence Plaza

Independence Plaza members will visit institutions that are showcasing the talents and accomplishments of Black people, including:

February 1: “Taking Care” highlights the groundbreaking work and legacy of the “The Black Angels,” nurses who risked their lives, broke racial barriers and forever changed the trajectory of the horrific disease of tuberculosis (Staten Island Museum)

February 8: An exhibit featuring photographs of Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes and his friends–artists across generations and disciplines (Schomburg Center for Black Culture, Harlem)

February 22: An exhibit featuring the work of the artists-in-residence for the Studio Museum in Harlem (MoMA PS1, Queens)

February 29: An exhibit featuring the profound artistic contributions of North Africa, Egypt, Nubia, Ethiopia and other powerful African kingdoms to the  Byzantine Empire circa 330–1453 (Metropolitan Museum)
