Theater Programming Begins at Greenwich House

The historic Greenwich House Theater began as a children’s theater in 1917, directed by Helen Murphy, offering classes and productions for the local community at 27 Barrow Street.

In the photo below, Greenwich House staged an outdoor production on Jones Street about NYC’s need for more playgrounds to provide kids with a safe place to run and play. Similar to the Theater of the Oppressed style popularized by Augusto Boal, Greenwich House’s theater program has always opted to present works advocating for social issues rather than just pure entertainment. This ethos continues today in Greenwich House’s Theater For Change program.
