Just around the corner from Jones Street, at Greenwich House’s 27 Barrow Street location–the Greenwich House Pottery Artist Membership offers a flexible, self-directed alternative to traditional classes in a fully-equipped studio to work without instruction.
The GHP Artist Membership is designed to offer a supportive environment that balances professional resources with creative freedom. With generous access hours, dedicated storage, and professional-grade equipment, members can pursue their art practice free from the constraints of class schedules. The studio is open more than 60 hours per week, making it easy to integrate studio time into your routine.

What’s Included:
- A dedicated 33” w x 19” d x 18” h shelf for work in progress and a cubby for tools
- Access to professional studio equipment including:
- Space for 20 artists to handbuild or slipcast
- One slab roller
- Shared studio tools (sponges, buckets, banding wheels, canvas, etc.)
- Coming soon: pottery wheels
- Self-directed studio access:
- Monday–Saturday: 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.
- Access to cone 06 and 6 electric firing (see Firing Details below)
- A collaborative, welcoming atmosphere for focused, independent work

Pricing:
$360 per month
Minimum commitment:
1 month minimum; Monthly membership begins on the 1st or 15th of the month.
Clay & Materials
Cone 6 clay and casting slip are available for purchase:
- Standard 211 Hazelnut (brown stoneware) – $30/25lb bag
- Standard 240G White Stoneware with grog – $30/25lb bag
- Standard 130 English Porcelain – $45/25lb bag
- Standard English Porcelain Casting Slip – $35/gallon
Please place clay orders online. Clay orders will be delivered to member shelves once a day. Be sure to place your clay order at least a day in advance to ensure clay is ready when you need it.
Glazing & Workshops
- BYOG: Bring your own commercial Cone 6 glazes (double-check packaging to avoid Cone 06)
- Membership includes access to AMACO glaze workshops and donated products. The next workshop date is in early 2026.
Firing Details
- Bisque and Cone 6 firings available at standard GHP firing rates of $0.03 per cubic inch per firing.
- Our standard measuring and billing system will apply. Members will use the GHP measuring app to pay for firing.
- Kilns are loaded and fired a minimum of once per week.
STUDIO EXPECTATIONS & COMMUNITY GUIDELINES
- This is a self-directed program for experienced artists.
- Slipcasting is welcome but we cannot support mold making. You are welcome to bring molds from previous classes at 16 Jones Street.
- Keep our shared space clean and safe: clean your tools and surfaces after each use.
- Wear your membership badge at all times for building access.
- There is no instruction from teachers nor technical staff on hand. If you are looking for more instruction/guidance, we encourage you to enroll in a class at one of our other GHP locations.
- Please respect this studio for independent study as a collaborative space.

FAQ
Who can join?
The program is open to artists working in clay with at least 2 years of experience.
What experience level is required?
Intermediate to advanced artists who can work safely and independently in a studio environment. At least 2 years of working in ceramics is required. No guidance is provided. It is up to the artist to troubleshoot their own practice and be accountable for the studio and the safety of fellow members. Please complete this Membership Profile Form.
How do I register?
Once you complete the Membership Profile Form, you will be contacted by staff with a link to register. Sign up will be through our Sawyer registration platform. You will use the same log-in information that you use for class registration.
How does studio access work?
Access is first-come, first-served. Badges are required for check-in at the front desk. Take the elevator to the fifth floor. If needed, a sign-up system may be implemented to ensure equitable access. Space is limited. Our space accommodates up to 20 members working at one time.
Can I switch from a class to a membership?

Can I take a break during my membership?
Yes, but you must remove all items from the studio shelves and cubbies during your absence.
Can I bring my own clay?
No. Only GHP-supplied Cone 6 clay and casting slip may be used. You may bring colored slips, underglazes, etc.
Can I glaze at the West Village or Chelsea locations?
Only if enrolled in a class at that studio. Otherwise, please glaze at Barrow Street.
Is there space for my tools and clay?
Yes. Each member receives a cubby, and there are coat hooks and closets for daily personal storage.
What tools are available?
Studio tables, slab roller, wedging surfaces, and basic community tools are provided: rolling pins, canvas, banding wheels and items found in a standard GHP classroom will also be at Barrow, however in limited supply. Be sure to return and clean community tools after use. We also encourage you to bring your own tools. No tools are sold on premises.
Is technical support available?
No. For instruction, consider joining a class. Register here.
I’m a slipcaster. Anything I should know?
Slip casting with pre-existing molds is encouraged. No plaster pouring or mold-making is permitted.
I work large-scale. Can you accommodate?
We have two Skutt 1027 kilns (23” L x 23” W x 27” D). Please contact staff to coordinate safe handling of large work.
What happens on the holidays?
Greenwich House is closed on federal holidays. the studio will remain closed in observance of:
Veteran’s Day on Nov 11,
Thanksgiving on Nov 27,
Christmas on Dec 25,
New Year’s Day on Jan 1,
Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan 19,
President’s Day on Feb 16,
Memorial Day on May 25,
Juneteenth on Jun 19.
Access hours will be limited on Christmas Eve, and New Year’s Eve.
Can I bring a guest?
Unfortunately, no. No children, friends, or pets allowed. For more information, refer to our Student Handbook.
Orientation
All new members must complete an orientation in their first week, covering:
- Building entry and security
- Studio guidelines and community values
- Safety procedures
- Materials handling and storage policies
This ensures all members feel confident and welcome in our shared space.
