The Whitney Museum of American Art’s Figurative Inspirations in our Daily Lives

Join the Whitney Museum of American Art for an artwork exploring and art-making course on Friday, October 4, 11, 18, and 25, November 1 and 8 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
Participants will investigate works of art included the Whitney Museum’s Permanent Collection exhibitions: –
  • What It Becomes (Aug 24, 2024-Jan 12, 2024)
  • Shifting Landscapes (Nov 1, 2024–Jan 2026)
  • and the temporary exhibition Edges of Ailey (Sept 25, 2024-Feb. 9, 2025), celebrating the life, dances, influences, and legacy of artist and choreographer Alvin Ailey, which includes artworks by over 80 artists arranged by themes that shaped Ailey’s life and dances.
Participants will explore how artists from diverse backgrounds and cultures and in different circumstances and moments are inspired by the human figure and the social contexts in which these individuals lived.
They will learn about the human form, including proportions, and participate in exercises in gesture, contour, outline, and tonal modeling. Participants will practice drawing and painting the human figure in the landscape and portraits using a variety of art materials, techniques, and artistic approaches, and develop their own art thinking and making practices. All art-making materials will be provided and no previous experience is necessary.
