Yoko Yates is a Japanese born and NYC based pianist, composer and educator. She serves as a piano faculty member at GHMS and BKCM. Her acclaimed 2022 debut on SteepleChase LookOut, Mystic Life, introduced a composer with a direct line to a beguiling trove of childhood memories. Her second album, Eternal Moments, showcases the same superlative cast of players while Yoko continues her sensorial sojourn, celebrating the wonders of the natural world (Andrew Gilbert).
Press Quotes:
Pianist-composer Yoko Yates expands on her unique musical concept on her Eternal Moments, her stunning sophomore album, set for a September 19 release on Banka Records. Retaining the quintet from her 2022 debut Mystic Life, it also includes 10 original post-bop jazz compositions that explore Yates’s enmeshed fascinations with visual imagery, autobiography, and the natural world. Eternal Moments is thus a natural, entirely organic follow-up to the much-lauded Mystic Life. “My first album was dedicated to childhood memory. I wrote from experiences related to nature and the world,” Yates explains. “This one is a little similar, but inspired by more recent experiences or events. I try to express more emotional complexity and more phases of each event, exploring a little more deeply.” – Terre Hinte, All About Jazz
From the meditative wonder of “Outer Space – Myriad Stars!” to the elegant melancholy of “The Flower Before It’s Last Day,” Yates paints vivid emotional landscapes shaped by memories, nature, and personal reflection. “Winding River” and “Aster,” the album’s focus track, channel the quiet power and resilience found in the natural world, with expressive improvisation and rich acoustic textures. – Banka Records
