Maliek began her career in Public Service working at various non-profits in Philadelphia and New York City in budget and grant operations. In 2007, she joined the Mayor’s Office of Management and Budget as a Budget Analyst overseeing fiscal operations for various Criminal Justice agencies in New York City, including the New York City Police Department. While working at the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), Maliek gained a wealth of knowledge collaborating with key players in the budget and policy arena of the criminal justice system Citywide. OMB provided opportunities for growth and a view of policy making in one of the most complex and dynamic local governments in the nation.
After briefly leaving City government for academia, Maliek returned to City government, joining the Bloomberg Administration as the Executive Director of Operations in the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice. Working in City Hall was the culmination of six years of hard work and experience in criminal justice budget and policy administration in the City of New York. Maliek’s career in public service has focused on financial operations with the understanding that an organization’s budget reflects priorities. The healthy financial operation of an organization is critical to its ability to deliver on its mission. Being able to focus on creating a strategic financial plan for an organization, generating policies that support that plan and implementing processes to ensure the plan is executed is as challenging as it is fascinating and rewarding.
Maliek has a B.A. in Political Science from The Pennsylvania State University, as well as a master’s degree from Villanova University, in Public Administration with a concentration in Non-Profit Management.
