Hannah Westerman
Pronouns: they/them
Hannah is a life-long New Yorker currently based in Harlem. They have a BFA from Hunter College in Ceramics and are currently pursuing an MSW at Smith College.
Hannah is curious about how we shed and impart on the things around us; the way that objects mimic bodies and bodies objects. Walking and documenting the city’s detritus is significant to their practice, their camera library filled with images of hair clips, styrofoam packing material, smashed appliances, concrete rubble, and hardware. These objects are records of the elements, memory, labor, and the body. Hannah’s practice questions attention through a reverence for discarded materials using photography, ceramics, found objects, and writing to mimic layering, remembering, and transmutation. They seek to prove that anything can become something else, and to train the mind towards an awareness of and ability to push its perceptual limits.
