Pottery Notes – Chelsea

FALL – December 9

Shine, Shine, Shine
On the last day of your class, we ask that all wheel throwers deep clean your wheel, splash pan, and stool; handbuilders please each choose one community supply (e.g. sort and fold canvas, wipe down the rolling pin shelf, or clean the dried clay off of the threads of a slip container so that it closes smoothly). Every tiny effort makes for a better studio experience for all.

End of Term Business

  • Glaze, glaze, glaze! We’ll fire a lot of kilns over the break. Please focus on glazing during the last week of class.
  • As we come to the final weeks of the term, we encourage you to wrap up all work in progress. If you are unable to finish a piece before the end of the term and ONLY if you are returning next semester, clearly label it with your NAME and WINTER 2025 with the orange tape provided in the classrooms. Any greenware pieces found unlabeled over break will be reclaimed, no exceptions. Staff will be working hard during the break to prepare the studio for the spring term.
  • Check your firing log through the self-measuring system and settle any unpaid balances.
  • Clear anything unwanted from your class shelves, and bring your tools home during the break or they will be donated to the studio.
  • If you were unable to glaze all of your pieces during this term, you can come in during the first two weeks of the next term to glaze any remaining work, even if you are not enrolled in a winter term class. This ‘glaze grace period’ will run from January 6 to January 19.

In the Jane Hartsook Gallery at 16 Jones Street
Be sure to check out the exhibition in the gallery, The Things I Want to Tell You, with work by April D. Felipe, Andréa Keys Connell, and Kensuke Yamada. United by a passion for using figurative ceramics to tell stories about human connection, each artist engages a different aspect of the figure’s narrative qualities to playfully tease apart the more difficult parts of being human.

Winter Break Pickup Days at GHP Chelsea
While the Pottery will be closed December 15 – January 5, we will be open 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. on the following days only for students to pick up work (no studio access):

Wednesday, December 18
Monday, December 23
Thursday, January 2

Test Tile Toss
All test tiles in the bin and the on the glaze pick-up shelves will be tossed at the end of our winter break (our first test tile toss ever!). If you have made test tiles this term or earlier please make sure you grab them out of the bin and store them with your tools or take them home. If your tiles are fired during break, we will keep them separated so they will not be tossed with the older ones.

FALL WEEK 12 – November 25/December 2

Registration is now open
Classes and workshops are now online for January – March 2025! We are excited for all that the winter semester has to offer, for returning students and new faces. View the class schedule and register here.

Made in Clay
Invite your friends and acquaintances to our annual holiday sale and support your fellow students, faculty, and staff. This is a great chance to show your friends around the pottery and accomplish some good gift shopping. The will take place at the West Village location this year, Saturday, December 7, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, December 8, 12:00 – 5:00 p.m. Visit our website for further details.

MIC Studio Closures
GHP Chelsea will be closed on Sunday, December 8, so that staff can support Made in Clay.

Studio-Wide Potluck
Please join us for studio fellowship and snacks in the glaze area on Wednesday, December 11, 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. Bring a dish or beverage to share and celebrate our clay accomplishments from Fall 2024!

Two Important Studio Areas

  • Get to know the hospital shelf. Located to the left of the wheel throwing studio, this is where pots will end up that have serious glaze flaws, missing firing slips, or were otherwise damaged during the firing process. If your piece is here, it is your responsibility to move it—either for a repair, for reclaim, or into the blue bin for disposal. Check this shelf periodically, if you forgot to place a class chip in your greenware before firing, this is where you will find your work.
  • Students are not allowed past the yellow line on the floor that demarcates the kiln area. Students should never load work into the kiln or handle the kiln posts, shelves, or cars.

Last Workshop of the Year: Candle Holders
Building on our popular menorah workshop, join Julia Elsas to craft a custom candle holder for any season. Saturday, December 7, 2:30 – 5:30 p.m. at GHP Chelsea. Projects will be fired and ready to pick up on December 23.

In the Jane Hartsook Gallery at 16 Jones Street
Be sure to check out the new exhibition in the gallery, The Things I Want to Tell You, with work by April D. Felipe, Andréa Keys Connell, and Kensuke Yamada. United by a passion for using figurative ceramics to tell stories about human connection, each artist engages a different aspect of the figure’s narrative qualities to playfully tease apart the more difficult parts of being human.

New Artist in Residence: Gina Tibbott
Please help us in welcoming Gina Tibbott as our resident artist from December 2 through January 17. During her residency, Gina will use Gisela Richter’s The Craft of Athenian Pottery published in 1923 as a jumping off point to create new work based on ancient forms. The Pottery’s first director, Maude Robinson, had a hand in the creation of this text, so Gina will be collaborating with both ancient Athenian potters and the Pottery’s own history.

End of Term Business

Students, faculty, and staff are welcome to enter the lottery, but space is limited. The sale will take place on the evening of Saturday, December 7, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. and afternoon of Sunday, December 8, 12:00 – 5:00 p.m. Visit our website for further details and to enter the lottery. The deadline to enter the lottery is Monday, November 11.

Firing Takes Time
As we enter November, please plan ahead if you have any strict deadlines for the holiday season. As everyone makes more work, our kilns get more crowded and turn-around time may slow down. Please talk to your teacher or a studio assistant about current turn-around times.

No Soap in the Yellow Sponges
Soap degrades our nice yellow sponges very quickly. Only use water. Thank you.

Clean the Extruder
After using the extruder, please scrub all of the parts to remove clay, from the tube to the die shapes to the handle.

Growing the Team!
We are very excited that Dustin Yager has accepted the role of Education Manager! Dustin’s qualifications, proven proficiency and generous contributions in the last few months as Education Coordinator for Chelsea have proven invaluable to the Pottery and we are certain his contributions in this role will be significant. The Education Manager role that he fills spans both locations and manages all of the class schedules, faculty coordination, workshop, private lesson, event creation and so many more many moving parts that keep the Pottery moving forward.

In the Gallery
Mark your calendars for Thursday, November 7, to join us for an artist talk and opening reception for the group exhibition The Things I Want to Tell You with Andréa Keys Connell, April D. Felipe, and Kensuke Yamada at our 16 Jones Street location. The talk will be at 4:00 p.m. in the glaze room at Jones St., followed by the opening reception in the gallery from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Consider purchasing a ticket to join us in celebrating Dave! More details can be found on our website.

Measuring & Studio Sessions – Your Honesty is Appreciated
Staff will be regularly checking the size of pieces going into both the bisque and glaze kilns to ensure accuracy in the sizes that students enter. We will be charging adjustments to your account for the discrepancies we find. Your firing fees cover the cost of loading, firing, and maintaining our kilns and are a crucial part of our studio’s success. Staff will be popping in to check attendance at studio sessions. Please make sure you register online or in the office.

FALL WEEK 8 – October 28

Do You Know Where Your Tools Are?
Please be careful to keep all tools out of the reclaim buckets as you deposit your clay slop or trimmings. Errant tools can harm staff, students, and equipment.

Do You Know Where Your Projects Are?
Do not disturb other students’ work in progress. Label your work to avoid cases of mistaken identity and always sign your pieces so they are identifiable after glazing. The tools stored by faculty and students in class drawers are not to be shared or taken by anyone. Help us keep our community strong by respecting each other’s work and belongings.

Keep ‘Em Movin’
Classroom shelves are getting crowded. Please bisque and glaze your pieces as you go so we do not have a firing bottleneck at the end of the term. The holiday season can be a high-volume time for making, please plan to finish your work early if possible.

Holiday Private Events
Did you know GHP offers private classes for when your family is all here for the holidays? Ask us about hosting a group of family and friends for a fun two-hour event of working together with clay!

Honoring Pottery Dave

No Classes for Yom Kippur/GHP closed for Indigenous Peoples’ Day
We will not have classes on Friday night, October 11, and all day on Saturday, October 12. The wheel and handbuilding studios will be available to book for studio sessions during this time and, as always, you must register online in advance.

Note that we will be closed on Monday, October 14, in observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Studio Session Etiquette
GHP Chelsea’s schedule is based on three blocks of time: 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., 2:00 – 6:00 p.m., and 6:00 – 10:00 p.m. It is important that all students respectfully start and end their studio time according to the block they have reserved. And as a matter of fairness, everyone needs to properly register for any studio session by paying online or at the desk. If you are having trouble finding where to make this reservation, you can scan the QR codes at the desk or message center or start on the Current Students page of our website.

Only Raw Clay in Reclaim Bins
Please double check that none of your tools are going into the reclaim buckets and note that those buckets are only for raw clay, no bisqueware or other fired clay of any kind.

Hospital Shelf and Unlabeled Bisque
Having trouble finding items, check the shelves to the left of the wheel classroom door. The unlabeled bisque shelves are where pieces w/o class chips land, anything that is glazed improperly or damaged can be found on the hospital shelf.

Glaze Studio Usage
No appointment is necessary. Check the glaze studio calendar posted in the message center to see if a class has reserved the space to work. Classes have priority when scheduled, but you may glaze for free anytime the room is open.

Keep it Moving
As we roll into week 5 of the fall term, you may have noticed that our class shelves are filling up. Please sort through the work this week and recycle any pieces that are abandoned, and prioritize moving your work into the firing process. To save space, group multiple pieces onto a large wareboard, and whenever possible, do not store pieces on plastic bats.

Summer Glaze Discard
All glazed work from summer 2024 must be taken home before this weekend. All work left from summer term is marked with a small glittery sticker and will be donated or discarded promptly on the morning of Monday, October 7. Please take your finished pieces home before the end of studio time, Sunday, October 6, at 6:00 p.m.

Plastic bats
Please do not store your work on the plastic bats. Whenever possible remove your wheel thrown pieces and put them on wareboards. Otherwise, we run out of bats for students to throw on.

Make Space on the Shelves
As we get into our fourth week of the term, classroom shelves are filling up! That is great to see–please just be mindful of space and keep your work moving, whether that is finishing hand-built sculptures or trimming wheel thrown pieces.

No Classes for Rosh Hashanah
Please note that we will not have classes Wednesday night, October 2; all of Thursday, October 3; and on Friday morning October 4, due to the holiday. The wheel and handbuilding classrooms will be available to book for studio sessions during this time and, as always, you must register online in advance.

Waste Streams
If you are discarding bisqueware or glazed pieces, put them in the large blue bin near the bisque drop-off shelf, you do not need to break them up. This bin is for heavy items; normal trash and small bits of contaminated clay can go into the studio garbage cans. Trimmings, hard or bone-dry clay (broken up, please), and goop from your throwing water should go into the reclaim barrel, and wet clay (e.g. failed pots) should be wedged and returned to the fresh clay barrel.

CORNER 601
Located in the corner of the studio session room, “Corner 601’ gallery highlights a rotating selection of work by our talented GHP staff. On view now is a lovely teapot by Studio Assistant Joel Hunter.

POTTERY Apparel – Final Call
Have you seen those hip POTTERY sweatshirts? Get one of your very own! Preorders for our sweatshirts are open until September 30, and can be made online or with a studio assistant. These are great conversation starters for making clay friends out in the wild and they make great gifts for the potters in your life. Expected delivery is by the first week of November. We also offer priority shipping in the US. Spread the word and show your support for GHP.

Hot Ticket for Studio Sessions
This weekend, kickstart your fall term with a free studio session during Sunday studio hours. Book online using the code SEPTEMBERSUNDAY. Pre-registration is required for all studio sessions in the dedicated studio and classrooms.

Glaze Studio Availability
Posted around the studio, you will find the schedule for the glaze studio this fall. Unless classes are scheduled in that space, you can drop-in to glaze any time. Reservations are not required and you do not need to register for a studio session. If a class has the space reserved, please check with the instructor for permission before working.

Summer Glaze Discard
All glazed work from summer 2024 must be taken home before Sunday, October 6 at 6:00 p.m. All work left from summer term is marked with a small glittery sticker and will be donated or discarded promptly on October 7. All summer glaze work is now out of the kilns.

Photograph Your Work
We highly encourage photographing your work and taking notes on your glazes. Consider using an app like ‘Pottery Notes’ designed for this purpose. With over 400 students (and all of their pottery) in the studio, it can be harder than expected to locate your pieces. Photos can be an enormously helpful aide.

How to Clean Up
Proper clean-up is critical to maintaining a healthy community ceramics studio. Breathing in dry clay is a health risk so it is important that everyone follows cleaning protocols. Your teacher will go over these in more detail but the basics are:

  • Every time you clean up, use a wet sponge or mop. Never sweep or blow clay dust, never scrape or use paper towels.
  • Surfaces must be wiped down multiple times with a clean sponge in order to remove clay and glaze residue.
  • For your first pass, bring a bucket of clean water to your wheel or work station to clean the space and your tools.
  • Keep clay off of the floors; use a mop or sponge to clean up any splashes or trimmings as clay on the floor that is stepped on will be spread throughout the building and become airborne.
  • Help yourself and others by leaving the studio cleaner than you found it—a clean studio is a happy studio.

Studio Access Schedule
Our daily studio schedule is organized around three 4-hour blocks of time. Although classes meet for 3 hours, students have additional time before/after their class to keep working. Thank you for adhering to these start/finish times throughout the day to keep everything flowing smoothly.

  • Morning classes meet 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., students have access until 2:00 p.m., but not before 10:00 a.m.
  • Afternoon classes meet 2:30 – 5:30 p.m., students have access from 2:00 pm – 6:00 p.m.

Restroom and Shared Spaces
Bathrooms are located on this floor in the hallway. To enter, press 2 and 4 at the same time and then press 3.

Take special care to keep clay in the studio. Wash your hands in our sinks before leaving the studio. The bathroom sinks can be ruined by clay in the pipes. As you move in and out of the studio, be mindful of whether you are dusty or tracking clay along with you. Remove your apron before exiting the space and use the mats outside the studio to wipe your feet before you walk down the hall.

Self-Service Measuring
We are very pleased to have launched the self-service measuring system at GHP Chelsea last winter. New students should make an account using the name and email address that you used to register for class by visiting http://potteryapp.greenwichhouse.org, registering on the shared iPad in the glaze studio, or by scanning the QR code posted in classrooms on your smartphone. If you are a returning student with an existing firing balance, it will be reflected in your account. Please be sure to set Chelsea as your default location so your firing slips print out at the correct studio.

If you need to reset your password or have any other questions, please see a Studio Assistant when you’re in the studio next. You can view instructions on how to use the new system online or throughout the studio.

Exhibition Opening: Ruth Easterbrook and Kevin Snipes
Join us on Thursday, September 19 for an artist talk (4:00 p.m.) and exhibition opening (5:00 – 7:00 p.m.) The exhibition will include the artists’ individual work as well as a new collaborative body of work that has never been shown before. You won’t want to miss it!

New Resident: Kristy Moreno
Please join us in welcoming Kristy Moreno as our artist in residence for the fall. She is a California-based artist who uses aesthetics influenced by Southern California counter cultures, cartoons from the 1990s, and folklore to create her figurative work. During her residency, she will focus on mold-making and developing her low- and mid-range glaze palette. Be sure to stop by the residency studio at GHP Jones Street to say hi and see what Kristy is working on.

FALL WEEK 1 – September 9

Thank you for joining us for fall term 2024!

Studio Sessions
Want to work outside of your class time? Our studio session room is always available for reservations and the classroom is available when classes are not meeting.  Studio sessions are 4-hour appointments and cost $10 per booking or $5 on Friday evenings. The session calendar and registration instructions are posted in the Message Center. You can book your session by visiting the Current Students section of our website and selecting Register for Studio Sessions. Pre-registration is required and these sessions are for registered students only.

Kickstart your fall term with a free studio session during Sunday studio hours in September. Book online using the code SEPTEMBERSUNDAY.

Glazing Grace Period
Summer students have until Sunday, September 22 at 6:00 p.m. to glaze work from last semester. Bisqued pieces left on the bisque shelf will be discarded on Monday, September 23: no exceptions!

Closing Time
The studio closes at 10:00 p.m. on weekdays and 6:00 p.m. on the weekends. Please make sure you are out before that time. Please clean your station and measure/fire your work at least 15 minutes before we close. Assistants need to lock the door and end their shift promptly at closing time.

Reclaim
The reclaim bucket is only for bone dry, hard leather hard, or very sloppy/gloopy clay. Any clay that can be wedged—even if it is a really soggy collapsed project—should be wedged and placed in the same bucket you got it out of. Soggy clay can be combined with normal clay from the bucket to bring it back to a workable consistency. Thank you for sorting your clay appropriately; it not only ensures workable clay for the next person, but also controls the maintenance generated by 200 students this term. Additionally, please triple check that there are no tools in your clay going into the reclaim as this can injure staff and harm our equipment.

Slabs of Plaster
The studio now has a few plaster slabs for communal use with reclaiming or other processes that require an absorbent surface. Please make sure to thoroughly clean the slabs when you’re done using them, especially if your materials stain. Never use metal or sharp tools on them, as plaster bits and clay do not get along in the kiln.

Registration Referrals
Did you recommend GHP to a friend this term? If a first-time student listed your name as a referral when they signed up, be sure to claim your 5 free studio sessions. Talk to a Studio Assistant for details.

A Clean Studio is a Happy Studio
As we all know, clay studios can get dusty quickly. Please make sure you are not only cleaning up your own space and shared tools when you are done working, but also tidying up extra items to boost your kiln karma!
