FALL WEEK 10 – November 19

Winter 2025 Schedule
The class schedule for the West Village and Chelsea studios is now available as one combined booklet, and online as a PDF. Browse by class topic, skill level, faculty, and day of the week. You can also preview upcoming workshops—including new offerings for parents and kids.

Registration will begin on Monday, November 25 with different time windows for new and existing students:
10:00 a.m.: West Village classes are available for all current GHP students
12:00 p.m.: West Village classes are available to new students
4:00 p.m.: Chelsea classes are available for all current GHP students
6:00 p.m.: Chelsea classes are available to new students

Made in Clay
Invite your friends and acquaintances to our annual holiday sale and support your fellow students, faculty, and staff. This is a great chance to show your friends around the pottery and accomplish some good gift shopping. The will take place at the West Village location this year, Saturday, December 7, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, December 8, 12:00 – 5:00 p.m. Visit our website for details.

Cone 10 Glazes
After community-wide polling, the palette of available cone 10 glazes will be reconfigured. Five of the current glazes will remain: Tenmoku, Val’s Green, Byrd Matte, Chun Blue, and Spotted Shino; Nelson’s Celadon and GHP Clear will alternate in the rotation. Temple White and Charlie D will be swapped in for High Alumina Matte and Gold Rutile Matte. Once the buckets fall below half, those glazes, those two glazes will be available for a limited time, and the new glazes will take their spot on the floor. We will rotate in small amounts of one or two of the other top choices as a single limited addition glazes until the time when the new kilns arrive, and we can once again offer the full palette of cone 10 offerings. Thank you for your help in making this decision, and happy glazing.

Last Week with A.I.R. Kristy Moreno
This is the last week of Kristy Moreno’s residency at GHP. Be sure to stop by the residency studio (1st floor by the spray booth) to see what she has been working on!

Be sure to check out the new exhibition in the gallery, The Things I Want to Tell You, with work by April D. Felipe, Andréa Keys Connell, and Kensuke Yamada. United by a passion for using figurative ceramics to tell stories about human connection, each artist engages a different aspect of the figure’s narrative qualities to playfully tease apart the more difficult parts of being human.

Moldmaker Memo
We are reaching the end of our slipcasting session! Slipcasters: before the end of the term, make sure to clean, consolidate, and clearly label any molds or works in progress with your name, class number and “winter 2024” using the orange masking tape provided, if you plan on returning for the next term. You may only leave these items in the slipcasting room if you will register in a moldmaking class for the next term. (Class end dates are listed on back.)

Made in Clay Updates
Thanks to everyone who entered the lottery to participate in our annual holiday sale. Notifications were sent on Tuesday, November 12. If you were selected to show your work in the sale, you must confirm by paying the table fee by Friday, November 16. We still have a few spaces available and will hold another round of the lottery, please enter by noon on Friday, November 15 if you are still interested. Students, faculty, and staff are welcome to enter. Promotional materials will be available soon.

Given a smaller number of participants this year, the sale will take place only at the West Village location, to maximize sales. The sale will take place on the evening of Saturday, December 7, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. and afternoon of Sunday, December 8, 12:00 – 5:00 p.m. Use this QR code to visit our website for further details and to enter the lottery.

Test Tile Toss
All test tiles in the bin and the on the glaze pick-up shelves will be tossed at the end of our winter break (our first test tile toss ever!). If you have made test tiles this term or earlier please make sure you grab them out of the bin and store them with your tools or take them home. If your tiles are fired during break, we will keep them separated so they will not be tossed with the older ones.

Artist Talk: Kristy Moreno
Join us this Wednesday, November 13 at 4:00 p.m. for an artist talk by GHP’s current artist in residence, Kristy Moreno!

Wall Work Workshop
GHP’s Resident Artist Kristy Moreno will be offering a workshop on 3D forms for the wall on Saturday, November 23. See the new poster around the studio for details. This event will be at our West Village studio.

Please note that GHP will be closed for Thanksgiving from Wednesday, November 27 to Sunday, December 1.

We are reaching the end of our slipcasting session! FALL WEEK 8 – November 4

Made in Clay!
Our annual holiday sale is back! GHP artists, selected by lottery, will be invited to sell their work at GHP during this year’s two-day event. Students, faculty, and staff are welcome to enter the lottery, but space is limited. The sale will take place on the evening of Saturday, December 7, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. and afternoon of Sunday, December 8, 12:00 – 5:00 p.m. Visit our website for further details and to enter the lottery. The deadline to enter the lottery is Monday, November 11.

Holiday Timing
As we enter November, please plan ahead if you have any strict deadlines for the holiday season. As everyone makes more work, our kilns get more crowded and turn-around time may slow down. We fire as fast as we can, but given the sheer volume of work entering the kilns in November and December, we are unable to expedite firing for made in clay or holiday gifts, so please plan accordingly and submit you work as soon as possible.

Mark your calendars for Thursday, November 7, to join us for an artist talk and opening reception for the group exhibition The Things I Want to Tell You with Andréa Keys Connell, April D. Felipe, and Kensuke Yamada at our 16 Jones Street location. The talk will be at 4:00 p.m. in the glaze room, followed by the opening reception in the gallery from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Measuring & Studio Sessions – Your Honesty is Appreciated
Staff will be regularly checking the size of pieces going into both the bisque and glaze kilns to ensure accuracy in the sizes that students enter. We will be charging adjustments to your account for the discrepancies we find. Your firing fees cover the cost of loading, firing, and maintaining our kilns and are a crucial part of our studio’s success. Staff will be popping in to check attendance at studio sessions. Please make sure you register online or in the office.

Honoring Pottery Dave!
If you have not seen the news, we are thrilled to let you know that Greenwich House is honoring our very own Dave Gibson at our Fall Benefit on November 12 at the Tribeca Rooftop. Dave’s selection as an honoree reflects the deep respect and appreciation the entire GH community feels for him. Consider purchasing a ticket to join us in celebrating Dave! Growing the Team!
We are very excited that Dustin Yager has accepted the role of Education Manager! Dustin’s qualifications, proven proficiency and generous contributions in the last few months as Education Coordinator for Chelsea have proven invaluable to the Pottery and we are certain his contributions in this role will be significant. The Education Manager role that he fills spans both locations and manages all of the class schedules, faculty coordination, workshop, private lesson, event creation and so many more many moving parts that keep the Pottery moving forward.

Vestibule Gallery
The Vestibule Gallery is located to the left as you enter our building. Typically, this is a space where we exhibit work by staff members. The current exhibition features a sculpture and drawing by longtime community member Richard Laurenzi. Richard is going through a health crisis and this is our way of honoring his work by sharing it with the community he so loves.

FALL WEEK 7 – October 28

Glaze Toss!
All glazed worked that has not been picked up from the hallway shelves for over a month will be discarded or sent to the Sidewalk Sale. Please take your work home by Sunday, November 3 at 5:30 p.m.

Keep ‘Em Movin’
Classroom shelves are getting crowded, please bisque and glaze your pieces as you go so we do not have a logjam at the end of the term. If you had work from past terms awaiting cone 10 firing, please measure and pay for the firing and then move them to the “ready to fire” cone 10 cart in the glaze room.

Δ 10 Glaze Calibration
This is the last week to weigh in! Faculty members in every class will encourage discussion among students to determine which glazes are the most favored to be part of the Δ10 palette. Due to the fact that we are down to one gas kiln until the Blaauws arrive next summer, it is necessary that we continue to limit the number of glazes available and offer Δ6 options to keep up with the volume of firing. We have space on the floor for eight Δ10 glaze buckets. We choose the Δ10 palette to be curated to reflect the magic of reduction firing; so please keep this in mind as you submit your input. Your faculty members have been sent the link for the official class submission.

The Advisory Council
Our re-instated Advisory Council is composed of ten students and faculty representing the three ceramic disciplines taught, with a mix of both long-time and newer community members. Council members are; Carol Adams, Nixon Beltran, Francesca Canin, Lisa Chicoyne, Francis Coy, Aaron Hill, Liz Krisel, HaeWon Sohn, Gina Tibbott, and Jane Tucker. Seek these good folks out in the studio or submit an anonymous inquiry via our advisory form (found on the website.)

FALL WEEK 6 – October 21

New Δ6 Glazes Added
Your voices have been heard! We have added a matte black and a matte white to the Δ6 glaze palette. Black Bird and Lamb are tried and tested glazes from our Chelsea studio that you are sure to love.

Δ 10 Glaze Calibration
This is the week to weigh in! Faculty members in each class will encourage discussion among students to determine which glazes are the most favored to be part of the limited Δ10 palette. Due to the fact that we are down to one gas kiln until the Blauuws arrive next summer, it is necessary that we continue to limit the number of glazes available and offer Δ6 options to keep up with the volume of firing. We have space on the floor for just eight Δ10 glaze buckets. We are tweaking the Δ6 palette to match the community requests that we have heard; and we choose the Δ10 palette to be curated to reflect the magic of reduction firing; so please keep this in mind as you submit your input. Your faculty member is charged with submitting the top eight glazes that are discussed so the palette is better curated to meet the needs of the community.

Studio Sessions
A reminder that afternoon studio sessions are from 1:30pm–6:00pm so please clean up your station and depart promptly so that incoming classes can have the space to set up and start working. Students in evening classes are welcome in the classroom promptly at 6:00 p.m. All handbuilding and wheel classes are provided an extra 60 minutes at class time for set-up, clean-up and practice for the entire 4-hour time frame. Evening classes 6:00–10:00 p.m. just as morning classes have access to the morning time block from 9:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. surrounding their class. We promptly close at 10:00 p.m. during the week and 5:30 p.m. on the weekends. Take ample time to clean to ensure a speedy departure.

Slip Casters: Double Check Your Molds!
Some molds have been used and damaged in open studio times. Please double check you are using only molds you have made or molds you have gotten permission to use. We have no communal molds for slipcasting. Feel free to label dry molds with sharpie marker or stamp wet molds so there is no mix up on the shelves.

Space Heaters in Slipcasting
As many people know, until the boiler work is smoothed out, the slipcasting studio can stay pretty chilly this time of year. If you want to use a space heater to warm up your space please avoid plugging it in to the outlet by the air hose/light switch for exhaust fan. This will cause the fuse to trip temporarily losing electricity. There is an outlet/extension cord by the door and also by the slip mixing tank. Feel free to use those and don’t forget to turn off the space heaters when you leave!

Make sure to finish all work in progress
Measure and drop off your work for firing
Clear off all items from your class shelf
Take home all personal items (THIS INCLUDES ALL TOOLS) and let a liaison know once you vacate your locker.

You are welcome to return to finish glazing during open studio for the two weeks following your class. All glazing must be completed no later than November 9.

For students continuing into the next section, you must label the work you leave on your shelf after October 25. Use the orange masking tape and sharpies to label your work in progress with YOUR NAME and “B-section.”

FALL WEEK 5 – October 15

Cone 10 and Spring Work
For those who do not yet know, cone 10 firings have returned to the Pottery! We are so thrilled to bring this service back to our community. If you had work from past terms awaiting cone 10 firing, please measure and pay for the firing and then move them to the ‘“ready to fire” cone 10 cart in the glaze room.

Studio Time Registration and Payment
As a reminder, students must register and pay for their studio time registrations. While morning students may stay until 1:30 p.m. and evening students may enter their classroom at 6:00 p.m., anyone staying to work in the classrooms in the afternoons, Friday evenings, or weekends must register and pay for their spot. If you decide to extend your worktime, please sign up online or see a liaison in the office. Liaison will occasionally come through to do spot checks.

Keep Pieces Moving!
We’ve noticed that classroom shelves are filled with bone dry pieces, please bring these down to be bisqued. This will ensure that we do not experience a logjam of work to be bisque and glazed towards the end of the term. And we need the ware boards!

New Glaze Combo Tiles
Make sure to check out the new cone 6 combination test tile board, located to the left of the main cone 6 and cone 10 test tiles. The tech team has been hard at work testing out over 250 combinations and building a lovely display system. We’re excited for you to try them out!

Studio Closure
Due to the Snipes/Easterbrook Workshop happening on Sunday October 20, the second floor wheel room will be closed all day. There will be no access to the lockers in the far corner due to equipment storage and class shelves may be inaccessible. Please plan accordingly and minimize disruptions from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Kevin Snipes on Site
One of the two artists in our current exhibition, See/Saw: Collaborative Play by Ruth Easterbrook and Kevin Snipes, will be in the gallery carrying out a mini-drawing residency. Stop by to say hello and to see Kevin’s process on Tuesday, October 22 from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

FALL WEEK 4 – October 7

Monday Hours
On Mondays, the Pottery opens at 6:00 p.m. for glazing and classes. Please do not enter the building before 6:00, as we have kids programming in the building. Note that we will be closed on Monday, October 14 in observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Studio Sessions and Glazing Information
Did you know you can book time to work in your classroom outside of your regular class hours? Sessions are $10 per appointment, and Friday evenings are $5. You can find the booking portal, glazing information, and more via the “Current Students” section of our website!

Glazing!
Don’t forget that it’s free to use the glaze room, and no appointment is necessary for you to come glaze your work. You do, however, need an appointment to use the spray booth (bookable online). Before you come in, make sure to consult the Glazing calendar on our website (or in the studio) to make sure you don’t overlap with a faculty demo reservation.

Jones Street Glaze Toss
Glazed work from the spring and summer terms must be taken home by Sunday, November 3 at 5:30 p.m. or it will be discarded.

Discover Pottery Open House
Add it to your calendar: the Discover Pottery Open House at our GHP-Chelsea location is Sunday, November 3 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. With free live demonstrations, studio tours, and fun hands-on activities, your friends and family can experience the joy of pottery for themselves.

Treats in the Streets
Visit Gansevoort Plaza on October 19 for Treats in the Streets, the Meatpacking District’s annual neighborhood trick-or-treat festival. Make a plump lil pumpkin, creepy crawly clay critter, spooky spindly spider or some festive fall foliage. GHP will be hosting a clay activity from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. and it is the final week of the Great Elephant Migration public art piece. Another way to let your friends and family experience your love of clay!

Hurricane Helene…
Devastated many artist’s homes and studios in the Southeast. If you are looking to help, consider making a contribution to CERF+. The Craft Emergency Relief Fund serves artists by offering emergency relief as well as future preparedness.

Perfect practice…
Makes perfect! Register for studio sessions to practice outside of class time; it’s also a good place to meet others in your discipline who may not be in your class.

No Classes for Rosh Hashanah
Please note that we will not have classes Wednesday night, October 2; all of Thursday, October 3; and on Friday morning October 4, due to the holiday. The wheel and handbuilding classrooms will be available to book for studio sessions during this time and, as always, you must register online in advance.

Cough, Sneeze
The change in weather also means a change in air-borne illnesses. This is your friendly and supportive reminder to stay home if you are feeling ill, and wear a mask if you are uncertain.

FALL WEEK 2 – September 23

Final Week of the Glaze Grace Period
We’re approaching the end of our grace period for summer term glazing! Make sure to glaze and move your pieces through the studio.

Photograph Your Work
We highly encourage photographing your work and taking notes on your glazes. Consider using an app like ‘Pottery Notes’ designed for this purpose. With over 400 students (and all of their pottery) in the studio, it can be harder than expected to locate your pieces. Photos can be an enormously helpful aide.

All work on the bisque shelves must be glazed and dropped off at the measuring station no later than September 29 at 5:30 p.m. even if you are registered for the current term! The bisque shelves will be cleared the morning of September 30. If you are enrolled for fall and cannot glaze all of your work in time, you may consolidate and label your pieces clearly with your full name and “fall 2024.”

How to Clean Up
Proper clean-up is critical to maintaining a healthy community ceramics studio. Breathing in dry clay is a health risk so it is important that everyone follow cleaning protocols. Your teacher will go over these in more detail but the basics are:

Every clean up, use a wet sponge or mop. Never sweep or blow clay dust, never scrape or use paper towels.
Surfaces must be wiped down multiple times with a clean sponge in order to remove clay and glaze residue.
For your first pass, bring a bucket of clean water to your wheel or work station to clean the space and your tools.
Keep clay off of the floors; use a mop or sponge to clean up any splashes or trimmings as clay on the floor that is stepped on will be spread throughout the building and become airborne.
Help yourself and others by leaving the studio cleaner than you found it—a clean studio is a happy studio.

Mayco luster
Mayco has announced the discontinuation of overglazes including the Bright Gold, White Gold, Mother of Pearl, Premium Gold and Essence that we have sold for many years in the office. This decision was not made lightly and was influenced by various factors and challenges. Including stricter regulations recently implemented for both consumer health and the environment. We have a limited supply of these materials remaining. Please. No more than one purchase per customer.

FALL WEEK 1 – September 16

Welcome!
We hope that you had a happy and safe break and we are excited to have everyone back! Whether you are a new or returning student, we ask that you carefully read the student one-sheet for studio information and policies. Each week in class, teachers will read Pottery Notes, which contain all the studio updates you should know. If you miss hearing them read aloud, please check online or on the bulletin boards weekly to make sure you are aware of important announcements and deadlines.

Studio Updates
To those of you who stuck with us throughout the summer term, we appreciate you bearing with us. The good news is, the hoist is repaired, all the electric kilns are in working order with bisque firings, cone 04 firings, cone 6 finings, and luster and decal firings all complete! And finally, our air conditioning system was completely repaired. Thank you for your patience and understanding through it all.

At the moment, we continue to await the restoration of gas service at 16 Jones St. Repairs have been made, and tests performed and passed. We anticipate that once Con Edison installs the new meter within the next couple weeks, service will be restored. We appreciate your patience!

Glaze Grace Period: Summer Students Finish Up
A reminder that all work on the bisque shelves must be glazed and submitted for firing no later than Sunday, September 29 at 5:30 p.m. The bisque shelves will be completely cleared the morning of September 30; anything left on the shelves will be discarded to make space for new work regardless of individual students’ enrollment! (Bisqueware stored for the return of cone 10 firing is exempt as long as labelled.)

Community Advisory Committee
We have reinstated our Community Advisory Committee. This group is composed of students and faculty, both long-time and newer to the pottery from all disciplines of ceramics taught here. The purpose of the group is to help provide input and feedback as we move to make studio improvements and face facilities challenges while powering into the next 100 years of art and advancement at GHP. You can find a list of Advisory Committee members and their contact details posted on our Message Center, in case you would like to reach out to them with any thoughts or feedback.

Studio Sessions
Want to work outside of your class time? You can book studio sessions, which are 4-hour appointments in your respective classroom. Studio sessions cost $10 per booking, and the session calendar and registration instructions are posted in each classroom. You can book your session by visiting the Current Students section of our website and selecting Register for Studio Sessions. Friday evening studio session reservations are $5! Pre-registration is required. Kickstart your fall term with a free studio session during Sunday studio hours in September. Book online using the code SEPTEMBERSUNDAY.

Self-Service Measuring
We are very pleased to have had self-service measuring system at the Jones Street studio since the summer term. Please make an account using the email address that you used to register for class by visiting potteryapp.greenwichhouse.org, registering on the community iPad in the glaze room, or by scanning the QR code posted in classrooms on your smartphone. If you are a returning student with an existing firing balance, it will be reflected in your new account.

If you need to reset your password or have any other questions, please see a liaison for assistance when you’re in the studio next. You can view instructions on how to use the new system online or throughout the studio.

Please be sure to set Jones Street as your default location so your firing slips print out at the correct studio! Remember, just as before, firing slips are your tickets into the kiln; they prove you have paid to fire your work. Two receipts print out when you measure; one is submitted with your work for your BISQUE firing, and you must hold onto the second receipt to submit when you are ready for the GLAZE firing.

For pieces bisqued during the spring term, you will use your firing slips from last term for the glaze firing. You can find these on the lockers across from the liaison office.

Door Code
The door code for entry is 5-3-1. Please only use this code during hours that the studio is open, otherwise it will not work!

Artist Talk and Exhibition Opening: Kevin Snipes and Ruth Easterbrook
Join us on Thursday, September 19 for an artist talk (4:00 p.m.) and exhibition opening (5:00 – 7:00 p.m.). The exhibition will include the artists’ individual work as well as a new collaborative body of work that has never been shown before. You won’t want to miss it!

New Resident: Kristy Moreno
Please join us in welcoming Kristy Moreno as our artist in residence for the fall. She is a California-based artist who uses aesthetics influenced by Southern California counter cultures, cartoons from the 1990s, and folklore to create her figurative work. During her residency, she will focus on mold-making and developing her low- and mid-range glaze palette. Be sure to stop by the residency studio on the first floor to say hi and see what Kristy is working on!
